This wikiHow teaches you how to marry someone in the Skyrim game by getting and carrying the Amulet of Mara, then conversing with non-playable characters (NPCs). This guide applies to both the standard edition of Skyrim and the Special Edition released for the next generation of consoles and PCs.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Getting the Amulet of Mara
Step 1. Go to Riften
The place is in the southeast corner of Skyrim. If you want to get there quickly, open the map and select Riften.
- If you've never been to Riften, you can rent a horse-drawn carriage outside Whiterun or in another big city to go there.
- If you've explored some of the dungeons in Skyrim, you probably already have the Amulet of Mara. Check your inventory first before proceeding.
Step 2. Walk towards the Temple of Mara
This temple is at the end of the Riften.
Step 3. Find Maramal and talk to him
Usually he is in the Temple of Mara. If you get there in the middle of the night, you may have to wait until noon or later the next day before he shows up.
If you can't find him at the temple, he's most likely in the Bee and Bard pub. This pub is located across the small bridge which is in the middle of Riften
Step 4. Select the “I wanted to know more about the Temple of Mara” option
Maramal will respond to you by explaining about Mara.
You can skip the conversation by clicking the mouse button, or pressing the button X or A on the console.
Step 5. Select the option I could have a wedding at the temple? This leads Maramal to ask if you know much about marriage in Skyrim.
Step 6. Select the “No, not really” option
Maramal will explain how to get married in Skyrim.
Step 7. Select the "I'll buy an Amulet of Mara" option
You must have at least 200 gold if you choose this option. If you can afford it, Maramal will add the amulet to your inventory.
Step 8. Bring the Amulet of Mara you bought
If you have done so, then you are ready to find a partner.
Part 2 of 2: Married
Step 1. Find the person you want to marry, then talk to him
The person you can marry will show joy when you pass by or when you talk to them. You can see a complete list of NPCs that can be married at:
- In some cases, you will have to do a search to find the person you want to marry before you can move on.
- If the person is a hireable follower, you may need to purchase their services.
Step 2. Select the option Interested in me, are you? The NPCs will gladly agree.
Step 3. Select the "I won't lie. I am" option
This will strengthen the marriage promise between you and the NPC.
Step 4. Return to Riften
You can go there as fast as lightning.
Step 5. Find Maramal and talk to him
Look for him at the Temple of Mara or the Bee and Bard pub.
Step 6. Select the "I'd like to have a wedding at the temple" option
Maramal will respond by telling you that the wedding will take place between dawn and dusk the next day.
Step 7. Wait outside the temple until the next dawn
You can speed up the waiting period by pressing the " Wait " button (T on the PC and " Back " on the controller) and selecting the correct time from now until 8:00 am the next day.
If you are not present at the scheduled wedding, find your spouse and apologize to him/her. Next, plan a new wedding date with Maramal
Step 8. Re-enter the temple
This will trigger a cutscene (snippets of action in the game in the form of video) in third person, where Maramal marries you to an NPC.
Step 9. Select the option " I do
Now and forever.
This will complete your wedding ceremony.
Tips
- If you marry a follower, that person cannot be killed.
- Unlike real life, marrying a rich person should be your priority.
