This wikiHow teaches you how to read old chat messages on Facebook. You can do this through Facebook Messenger or using the Facebook site on a desktop computer.

Method 1 of 2: On Mobile
Step 1. Launch Facebook Messenger
The app icon is a lightning bolt on a blue background.
If you haven't signed in to Messenger, type in your phone number, tap Continue, then type in the password.
Step 2. Tap Home
It's a house-shaped tab in the lower-left corner.
Step 3. Tap the desired conversation
Old messages will be placed so far at the bottom of the page that you may have to scroll down.
Step 4. Scroll the screen to browse the messages
The further you scroll down the screen, the longer the message will appear.
Step 5. Tap the message you want to read
The message will be opened so you can read it.
Method 2 of 2: On Desktop Computer
Step 1. Visit the Facebook site
Launch a web browser and visit https://www.facebook.com. If you are logged into Facebook, the News Feed page will open.
If you're not logged into Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) and password before you continue
Step 2. Click the Messenger icon
The icon is a conversation bubble with a lightning bolt in the middle, which is in the top right of the Facebook window. This will bring up a drop-down window.
Step 3. Click See All in Messenger
This is the link at the bottom of the drop-down window.
Step 4. Scroll down the conversation
Conversations are displayed in chronological order so old conversations will be placed at the bottom.
Step 5. Click the message you want to read
The message will be opened so you can read it.
Step 6. Scroll the screen to browse the messages
The further you scroll down the screen, the longer the message will appear.
Step 7. Click Settings
which is on the left side of the Messenger window.
A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 8. Click Archived Threads
This option is in the middle of the drop-down menu.
Step 9. Read the archived message
All archived messages will be displayed here. If the old message you're looking for isn't in your inbox, it's probably on this page.
