Most sellers provide the opportunity to return the item in its original condition within 90 days of purchase. These terms apply to returns on Amazon, eBay, Target and Walmart. But actually this provision also applies to most sellers and shops that sell goods via the internet. If you live in the US, read this article to learn how to return items purchased online.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Returning Items to Amazon
Step 1. Sign in to your account on amazon.com
Amazon tracks purchases for returns.
Step 2. Visit the Amazon Returns Center
This page is at www.amazon.com/gp/orc/returns/homepage.html. Click the button with the words Return Items.
Step 3. Find the order of the item you purchased
Click Return an item from this order. If you don't see it, click See More.
Step 4. Select the item you want to return
Fill in the quantity fields, reasons for returns and comments.
Step 5. Select the available return options, for example refund, exchange or replacement
If the item is being sold by a third party seller, click the Submit for Approval button.
The third-party seller may take a few days to review the return request, then respond within two days and initiate the return process
Step 6. Choose how you want to return the item
In some of the available locations, you can downgrade your return package in Amazon Locker. Alternatively, you can ship the package yourself or print a UPS shipping label.
Step 7. Print the return label and authorize the return
Include a return authorization in the box. Use extra safety wrapping or original packaging, to ensure items are not damaged in transit.
Step 8. Put the label on the outside
Ship by UPS or USPS with tracking. You may be able to ask UPS or USPS to pick up the package.
- If you print a UPS shipping label, the return postage will be deducted from the return.
- You can also hand off your package to Amazon Locker if it's available in your area.
Step 9. Return to the Returns Center to manage returns and see if they have been processed
Method 2 of 3: Refund Returns to eBay
Step 1. Visit eBay to review the returns policy section for your purchased item
If a link to the seller's store, confirmation email or advertisement is available, you can review the return restrictions. Unlike other sellers, returns rules on eBay depend on the store from which they were purchased.
- The seller can set a return limit. Please read the ad carefully before buying, to make sure you can return the item.
- The seller may include a return limit that will only refund or replace only.
Step 2. Decide if you want a refund or a replacement
Sometimes there is only one option available.
Step 3. Buy with PayPal every time you use eBay
Returns are easier to process with PayPal than checks or money orders.
Step 4. Look for the confirmation email
Use the registered email address to contact the seller, and request a return and exchange or refund. Explain the reason for the return of goods in as much detail as possible.
Step 5. Agree to the return process specified by the seller
Ask the seller if they can provide you with an auto-return shipping label. This is possible if they use a service like USPS or UPS.
Step 6. Pack the goods carefully
Use extra safety wrapping, because the conditions for receiving returns are important for processing returns. Include your name, address, email, eBay item number, purchase confirmation, preferred payment and return email in the shipping box.
Step 7. Attach a label containing the seller's address and the return address
Pay for USPS, UPS or FedEx postage with tracking.
Step 8. Email the tracking number to the seller
Ask the seller how long it will take to send a refund. Ensure communication from the seller. The return process can take up to a month, so be patient in the meantime.
Step 9. Give good feedback if you follow this process and the seller responds well
Give negative feedback only if you feel as though the seller was dishonest in the refund process.
Method 3 of 3: Returning Items to Target/Walmart
Step 1. Return your item within 90 days
Look for purchase receipts. Walmart accepts purchases without a receipt for up to 45 days. You will receive cash if the purchase price is below $25. Walmart will replace with an item or gift card if your purchase price is more than $25.
Step 2. Return the purchased item directly to the store where you purchased it
Choose whether you will deliver goods purchased online to the store, or via online delivery. Returning an item to the store will reduce the time you wait for a refund or replacement.
Step 3. Put the goods in their original packaging
Bring the item, original packaging, credit card used if any, and receipt. Visit the Returns or Customer Service section of the store.
Purchases of goods from Target made over the internet have a receipt stored in your account. Visit an online return center to have it printed before making a return to the store
Step 4. Log in to your account on the target
com or walmart.com if you want to return the item to the store. Visit www-secure.target.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ManageReturns to access the Target Returns Center. Visit www.walmart.com/returns/returns_type.gsp to access the Walmart Returns Center.
Step 5. Go through the process of explaining the return, selecting the return process and printing the shipping label
Target will pay for return shipping, as long as you use their printed labels and services. Walmart will pay for return shipping if the return is due to their error. If not, you will bear the return shipping costs.
Step 6. Enter the return confirmation in the package
Be sure to use the original packaging and provide a safety wrap to ensure your package is not damaged in transit.
Step 7. Send the package according to your choice of delivery or provided by the seller of the goods
Return to the Return Center to view the progress of the return. It usually takes two to three weeks to process returns by mail.
