Rainbow colored roses can be a beautiful gift or an additional decoration for your home. What's more, you can make rainbow roses at home. You can make rainbow roses using real roses, but if you're not brave enough, you can make them using paper.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Method One: Using Real Roses
Choosing Roses
Step 1. Choose a white rose
Choose white roses or other light colors to make a rainbow rose. In order to get the best rainbow colors, white roses are the best choice.
- If you can't find white roses to color, use salmon, pale yellow, or light pink. Avoid roses that are red or dark red; dark colors will not be able to be colored because dark colors will cover the results of the coloring that you will create.
- Note: The degree of development of the roses you use will affect the coloring time. Roses that are almost fully developed, or those that are already fully developed, will receive the dye more quickly. However, roses that are still in bud will be slower to accept the dye given.
Preparing the Roses
Step 1. Prune the flower stems
Cut the stems of the roses to the height you want.
-
Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut the bottom of the rose stem so that it has a beveled end.
-
To determine the correct height, determine based on the height of the container that will be used for coloring or based on the height of the vase that you will use to place the roses after coloring. The stems of your roses only need to be slightly higher than the vase you will be placing the flowers in. But don't go over the height of the container you're using for coloring, or your roses won't be able to stand evenly in the container.
Step 2. Split the flower stem into several parts
Use a sharp razor to cut the ends of the stems into several pieces. You can use scissors or a knife, but whatever tool you choose must be sharp. If the stems of your roses are hard enough like wood, and you use a dull knife, you can damage the stems and even damage your buds.
-
The cut in the stem you make should start from the tip of the stem to a distance of 2.5 cm from the base of the flower.
Step 3. Split the stem into two to four parts
If you divide too much, you will weaken the flower stem.
-
Note that the number of sections you make on the stem will determine the number of colors in your rainbow rose.
Adding coloring
Step 1. Mix some colors of food coloring into a bowl of water
Fill a few tall containers with water and mix a few drops of food coloring in them. Choose one color for each container.
- As mentioned above, the number of colors should match the number of parts of the stem you are splitting.
- The more food coloring you use, the brighter the color will be on your rainbow roses.
- The best container is a container that is strong and not wide. Avoid using containers that have a wide mouth as the parts of the stem that have been split will be placed into each container, and a mouth of the container that is too wide will make positioning the stem sections difficult. Popsicle tins are best, as are decorative candle holders.
Step 2. Place each part of the stem into a different container
Carefully place each piece into the stained containers, making sure that the ends of the stems are completely submerged.
-
Pay close attention to bending and placing the stem parts. Trunks that have been split will become weak, and if you move parts of the stems carelessly, you could cause them to break accidentally.
Step 3. Place the stained containers close to each other to keep the flowers together and limit the distance you need to stretch the stems
Step 4. Let your roses soak for a few days
You will be able to see the color change in the first 30 minutes, but to get a rose that has a clear color, you have to soak your flowers in the dye for a few days.
- It may take a whole week for the colors on the roses to become clear, but after a day, each petal will have the desired tinge of color.
-
Water that has been dyed will be absorbed through the stems of roses like water. When the colored water is carried through the flower parts and flows into the flower petals, the dye will be deposited on the flower petals. Since the petals are white, the dye will easily be seen.
Method 2 of 2: Method Two: Using Paper
Choosing Paper
Step 1. Choose a square-shaped paper that has a rainbow of colors
To get the best color out of your roses, choose paper that has a rainbow of colors on both sides.
-
You can also choose a square sheet of white paper that is white, has a plain color, or has a pattern on the other side. You can try using different types of paper for best results.
-
Origami paper can be the main choice. The standard size for origami paper that can be used is (23 x 23cm).
-
If you are making it with white paper, you can use crayons or colored pencils to color the paper a rainbow of colors over the entire surface of the paper. For best results, try coloring in layers in a diagonal pattern from one corner to the opposite corner.
Making Rainbow Roses
Step 1. Start by cutting out a circle shape
Start in the center on one side and cut out a circle shape on your square paper, with the edge closest to the other three sides.
-
Don't break the side cutout at this point.
Step 2. Turn your circle into a spiral
As you approach the starting point of your cut, slide your cutout path by 1.25 cm. Continue cutting on the inside of the spiral outline on your paper until it reaches the center.
-
The thickness of your spiral should be the same across the line, which means that the thickness of the spiral should be 1.25 cm.
-
Spiral scissors without any other tools. You don't have to be too careful with this technique. In fact, these roses will look even better when you apply the principle of “wabi-sabi,” a Japanese aesthetic principle that emphasizes beauty over imperfection.
Step 3. Make a tab shape in the center of the spiral
At the end of the spiral, which should be right in the middle, you'll find a small tab that looks wider than the thickness of your spiral.
-
Your tab will be slightly rounded with a slight notch at the end.
Step 4. Remove the paper that is still square
Cut out the paper that still has a square shape at the point where you started your spiral circle.
Sharp corners and straight edges will only interfere with the final shape of your roses
Step 5. Roll the spiral from outside to inside
Roll the entire spiral toward the center, along the top of your paper.
-
When you start to roll, your roll should be as tight as possible. Use both hands to roll your paper. Hold your rose roll between two fingers in one hand and use the other hand to roll the rest of the paper together.
-
At first, your roll will look very tight and not look like a rose.
-
Set how tight your roses are. Release the pressure of your roll slowly, so that your roll is loose but still has its basic shape. Release a little pressure if you want a tight roll and release more pressure if you want a looser roll.
Step 6. Glue the tabs to the bottom of your rose
Apply a small amount of hot glue to the top side of the tab and press it firmly against the base of the flower. Make sure that each part of the spiral is attached to the glue.
-
Make sure you use hot glue or glue that dries very quickly.
-
You also need to make sure that each edge of the spiral is attached to the glue. Otherwise, your roses may unravel when you remove your grip.
-
When the glue has dried, remove your roses. Now your rainbow rose is done.
Step 7. Repeat to make more
Tips
- You can use the same coloring technique for other flowers. In general, this technique will work with most light flowers. Other flowers that can also be colored are carnations, chrysanthemums, and hydrangeas.
- You can also make colorful celery leaves using the same coloring technique used for roses. Do not split the stems, and leave the leaves.
