Do you want to publish a book at a young age? Are you a talented writer, but still in school? Don't worry, there are tons of young writers! If you want to write a book right now, even if you feel you are too young to do so, we have a number of tips to try.
Step
Method 1 of 1: Becoming a Talented Young Writer
Step 1. Think about “why” you want to be a writer
Do you write for fun? Maybe you're doing it to gain popularity and fame, or maybe you're just looking to make some extra money from selling your book. Even if your original intention wasn't to have fun, make it a goal so you can have fun while writing. If you don't enjoy writing, will people enjoy reading what you write?
Step 2. Try to read some books
Reading will help you see the work of authors whose books have been published, how they write, and find inspiration. Try to read a wide variety of books - fiction, biographies, poetry, etc. Write down all the interesting words that you think will look impressive in the writing and look for the meaning of the vocabulary.
Step 3. Make sure that you understand the basics of the plot being written
Even if you haven't found the end of the plot, you should be able to determine what genre it's written in, as well as who the characters are. You should also have an idea about the problems that will be faced by the main character. Be sure to write down this information so you don't lose your way while writing it.
Step 4. Learn proper grammar and spelling
You may not be very good at grammar. No problem. You can still learn it. You're not the best speller? Take a dictionary and look up words at random. This may sound trivial at first, but if you want to be a published author, you have to know the different functions of every word that sounds the same.
Step 5. Write down the sentences that form the basis of the story for your book
It's not necessary to go into all the details, but it's good to give an idea of what's going to happen in each chapter. Try to divide the basic sentence of your story into several parts, this will help determine when it is time to give a break between chapters, as well as other things to be included in the writing.
Step 6. Look for inspiration
You can't write without ideas. An article on glass and plastic fibers may be of interest to some, but most of us would rather read an interesting topic than some pointless nonsense. Write something interesting and creative, and think about the message you want to convey.
Step 7. Use correct punctuation
The use of punctuation errors is very annoying. Have you ever seen a friend's Facebook post that looked like it was written by a toddler? No one likes to read such writing.
Step 8. Don't think about your age
Your age doesn't define your writing ability. So what if you are still 11 years old? Or even 10 years? If you can write like a college kid, that's the most important thing. There are countless young writers whose work has made it to the New York Times best seller list.
Step 9. Write rough notes
These notes can be handwritten or typed, depending on your taste. Don't stop writing, no matter what. Sometimes, the hardest part of this process is not giving up on finishing a story. Remember, This is not going to take a day or even a week. Completing a story you write can take months. When you write something, don't reread it until you've finished a section. Right now, you just need to write as much as you can.
Step 10. Write descriptively
You want your readers to feel like they are in the story. Every part of your book should feel real. If your writing is not descriptive and not neatly written, it will not distinguish your writing from the writing of others in the class.
-
However, “don't” ever make your writing too flowery and fill it with unnecessary prose. You want the reader to feel like they are in the story, but too much detail can ruin the writing
Step 11. Create a good character
The best are those that complete the whole story in the book. You can create it based on someone you know or create it from a mix of several people to create a unique new character. Most importantly, you have to make the character likable. Who wants to read a book about someone who sucks? Readers care if the character dies or ends tragically?
Step 12. Try writing a variety of different genres
Do you want to be known as a romantic story writer? Does not matter. However, have you ever tried to write a scary story? Or adventure? Don't just write something you're used to writing, but try something new and you might be able to write something else better. The best thing about being a young writer is that you can write about people your age and understand them better than anyone else. So, you have an advantage.
Step 13. Read your first rough note over and over again
While you can do this to check for grammatical or spelling errors, the main goal of this step is to determine if the notes make sense. Also, check for overused vocabulary. If you notice you are using too many words or terms of the same, make a note to yourself, Then open the dictionary to find other more interesting words that can entertain your readers.
Step 14. Find someone who is known to have positive thoughts to give an opinion on your writing
This person will be a “writing examiner”. Ask him to make notes about his likes and dislikes, and how the story should be written. It can also correct any mistakes you missed, although this shouldn't be necessary. Read all the notes he gives you when you're done and think about all the suggestions he gives you. Even if you like a section, readers won't necessarily like that section.
Step 15. Type (retype) your rough notes into a word processor, including all revisions that have been made
Remember, this note is not a final post because your editor may decide to change something.
Step 16. Make a copy of your writing to send to the editor
Make sure you leave a wide gap to the edge of the paper so the editor can leave notes. Also make sure that you have written your page number and last name at the bottom of each page just in case one page is separated from another.
Step 17. If you don't already have an editor, do a search for an editor who will read the work of a young person
Make a connection with them and then submit your manuscript if they show interest.
Step 18. Retype your final notes based on the corrections the editor has provided
Step 19. Find a publisher who is willing to read the work of young people
A quick search through the Google search engine can help you find publishers that have published work by young writers before.
Step 20. Send a copy of your final writing to the publisher of your choice
Type to check if they want to publish children's work.
Tips
- Even if you get rejected, never stop writing! If you really like it then money and popularity don't matter. Do not ever give up!
- Think of additional adjectives and verbs as condiments. These words can make your book a success or a failure if you use them too much or too little.
- When you're working on rough notes, then realize that writing doesn't make you happy, it means money is what makes you feel motivated. Stop and do not write again unless you really enjoy writing or your writing won't be worth reading.
- Try to tell your friends and see if they seem bored. This can help you adjust the pace of the story so that readers don't get bored quickly.
- Be creative, and have fun with your writing.
- Don't overuse a word because it shows that you lack creativity.
- The dictionary is your best friend. Don't use it to look up every word, but if you want to use a cool-sounding word in every sentence, this thing can help you. For example, you could change the sentence "Tasya said that Arif was a very careless idiot" to "Tasya mumbled that Arif did not have the capacity to be a neat person". Microsoft Word has this feature. You just need to right-click on a word, then select “Synonyms”.
- You don't have to use words like shout, whisper, mumble, laugh, or ask questions to show someone is talking. Showing that a character is doing something implies that he or she is speaking.
- Don't be too bothered by the criticism you receive. If your editor wants to change something, you have to change it, because he knows best. It's better to be criticized by an editor than to be repeatedly rejected by a publisher.
- Write because you love to write.
Warning
- If you are doing this for the sake of fame or fortune, better choose another career. The author only becomes famous if his book sells well in the market. This may not be the case for all authors.
- Do not expect too much. Editors and publishers read thousands of books from emerging authors seeking fame, and many of these works are rejected
