Decorating a cement wall can be difficult if you don't have the right tools. Fortunately, there are some good options that are inexpensive and easy to implement. Opt for adhesive/adhesive hooks for light items, up to 3.5 kg, hardwall hangers for objects weighing up to 11 kg, and masonry (stone) anchors for the heaviest decorations over 11 kg.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Installing the Adhesive Hook
Step 1. Choose an adhesive hook for objects weighing up to 3.5 kg
These hooks have adhesive on the back so you don't have to punch holes in the wall. Weigh the item first so you can determine the right support.
- Adhesive hooks are available in a variety of sizes and usually indicate how much weight they can bear. These hooks are usually able to withstand a maximum weight of 3.5 kg and for the smallest can only withstand a load of 0.5 kg.
- Use 2 hooks for extra support if the item has straps or 2 hooks on the back.
Step 2. Clean the wall with rubbing alcohol so that the adhesive can adhere well
Use a clean washcloth or kitchen paper and rubbing alcohol to scrub the area clean. This step ensures that the adhesive sticks firmly to the wall.
If you don't have rubbing alcohol on hand, use warm, soapy water to clean the walls. Wipe dry after cleaning
Step 3. Make a small mark with a pencil where you want to attach the hook
If the object you are hanging has a string behind it, be sure to consider the length of the slack. Test it by pulling the center of the string up over the object until the tension is maximum. Measure from the bottom of the item to the part of the string that will hang on the hook.
- If you are using 2 hooks for an object with two hangers behind it, be sure to measure the distance between the two hangers when making your mark on the wall.
- If you are using 2 hooks for hanging ropes, measure the width of the object being hung and divide by 3. The marks on the wall must match the calculated distance.
Step 4. Remove the cover from the adhesive strip and attach it to the back of the hook
If the adhesive strip isn't already on the hook, first peel off the coating on one side of the strip. Position the strip against the back of the hook, then attach it.
Some adhesive hooks already have adhesive attached to the back. Skip this step if your adhesive hook looks like this
Step 5. Press the adhesive side of the hook against the wall for 30 seconds
Remove the paper on the back of the hook, align the hook, then press it firmly against the wall and release.
Step 6. Allow the adhesive to dry for 30-60 minutes
After the adhesive dries, hang the item on the hook.
If the item pulls the adhesive hook off the wall even after waiting for the adhesive to dry, make sure that the hook used is appropriate for the weight of the item
Method 2 of 3: Using Hardwall Hangers
Step 1. Purchase a hardwall hanger if the item weighs up to 11 kg
Hardwall hangers are specially made for cement and brick walls. Each hanger has four strong pins that will anchor the base of the hook to the wall.
- You will need a hammer to attach this hanger.
- Use 2 hardwall hangers to hang an object if you need extra support for hanging items and have the right tools for this project.
Step 2. Make a mark on the wall where the hanger will be attached
If the hanging item has a string at the back, consider the slack when determining the position of the hanger. Test it by pulling the center of the rope up onto the item until the tension is maximum. Measure from the bottom of the item to the part of the string that will hang on the hook.
If you are using 2 hardwall hangers, determine the distance between the two hooks on the back of the item, or measure the width of the item hanging and divide by 3. Either of these methods will determine how far the mark on the wall will go
Step 3. Place a pin with a hammer in the given hole
Align the center of the base with the mark on the wall. Hold the hanger with one hand firmly and tap the four pins until they are halfway in with a hammer. Release the handle on the hanger and check that the hook is positioned correctly. Finish by hammering the pin parallel to the hook.
To prevent injury to the fingers, it is best to start with very light strokes. Once you feel that the pin is firmly against the wall, release the grip on the pin, and slam the hammer directly into the pin head to finish
Step 4. Wrap the string or hanger around the item on the hook
Take a few steps back and look to make sure things are aligned straight. Fix it if necessary, and enjoy.
Method 3 of 3: Installing the Masonry Anchor
Step 1. Choose a masonry anchor to hang an object with a mass of more than 11 kg
These anchors are usually plastic, and come with screws for insertion into the anchor. You will need a drill and drill bit the same size as the anchor.
- You can purchase a masonry kit that includes an appropriate sized anchor, screw, and drill bit.
- For added support, use two anchors to hang one item.
Step 2. Use a hammer drill for best results
Standard electric drills are compatible with masonry drill bits, but the process will take a long time and the resulting hole may be larger than desired. Rent or borrow a hammer drill if you can.
You can rent a hammer drill at a hardware store or rental shop. Call first before visiting a drill rental place
Step 3. Make holes with a drill to help anchor
Measure carefully and mark points for anchors. Glue the tip of the drill bit at the selected point. Make sure you hold the drill firmly and check that your drill bit, drill rod, and arm are parallel to the floor. When drilling, press firmly against the wall and hold your position.
Use a low speed setting when drilling cement walls for best results
Step 4. Tap the anchor into the hole until it is parallel to the wall
The anchor should be firmly in place, but not so tight that you have to hammer it hard. If the hole is too small, re-drill with a slightly larger drill bit.
Step 5. Install the screws on the anchor
Use a screwdriver or screw drill bit to tighten the anchor. Stop before the screws are aligned so that there is enough room for the rope or hanger. Hang your stuff, and adjust it until it's straight. Enjoy.
Warning
- Be sure to read and follow all operating instructions provided with the drill before using the tool.
- Protect your eyes when drilling. Consider wearing goggles or protective eyewear
- Use a stud finder with a cable tracer to make sure you don't drill through live electrical wires.
