To apply for painting services or find a handyman to paint your home, you need to understand what needs to be taken into account in estimating the price. Although the price component is usually the cost of material and processing time in rupiah, there are many other factors that influence it. When estimating costs, take into account such things as raw materials, labor, and factors that reduce costs (if any). When hiring a painter, you should also directly ask the contractor where he works.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Estimating Paint and Equipment Costs
Step 1. Measure the work area
To determine the cost of painting or the price you want to charge, measure the area of the walls and/or roof to be painted in square meters. You can also find this information in the files you signed when you bought or rented your home. If you're painting for someone else, ask them to provide that information.
But if that information is not available, use a ruler or tape measure to measure the length and width of the working area. After that, just enter the numbers into an online calculator to get the square meter
Step 2. Subtract the unpainted area
For a house or room, there are definitely areas that don't need to be painted. Therefore, reduce the area. Doors, window frames and frame profiles need to be painted but the shutters don't. So, measure the area of the shutters and subtract it from the total work area.
Normally, doors have an area of 1.86 m2 while shutters are 1.4 m2. For example, for a 65 m2 room that has one door and two windows, then you have to subtract 1.86 m2 for the door and 2.8 m2 for both windows so that the total working area is 60.34 m2
Step 3. Calculate the amount of paint needed
A can of paint (2.5 liters) can be used to paint 27 m2. Therefore, a room of 60.34 m2 will require approximately two cans of paint because 60.34 divided by 27 gives 2.23. But since good painting is always done twice (two coats), you need to buy about 5 cans of paint to paint room area of 60, 34 m2.
Step 4. Calculate the cost of the paint
After knowing the amount of paint needed, calculate the cost of the paint. The cost of paint is largely determined by its color and quality. Normally the price of a can of paint ranges from Rp. 60,000, 00 to Rp. 235,000, 00 per 2.5 liter can of paint, but for higher quality paint, the price is definitely more expensive.
For example, you want to paint two coats with paint that is good enough for a room of 60.34 m2, meaning you need 5 cans of paint. If you want to buy paint that costs Rp. 125,000.00 per can, it means that you have to prepare around Rp. 625,000.00 for the paint
Step 5. Calculate the cost of the material
What equipment do you already have and what do you still need to buy? Usually, to do the painting you will need old newspaper or plastic, paper insulation, sealant, tarpaulin, paint brush or roller, and a can of primer.
- You can contact your local store to find out the average price for the above equipment.
- Assuming the newspaper is free (because it's used) and the price of paper insulation is IDR 37,000, 00, sealant is IDR 40,000, 00, and basic paint is IDR 100,000, 00, it means that the equipment costs are around IDR 177,000.
Method 2 of 2: Calculating Miscellaneous Expenses
Step 1. Calculate the labor cost
When hiring a painter, you need to know how much they pay. But if you're hired to paint, you need to determine what wages you're worth. Within 1-2 days, 1 or 2 painters can usually paint 232 m2 and are paid around IDR 122,000, 00 per day.
For a small room, for example 60, 34 m2, the processing time should only be a few hours. Divide 60.34 by 232, the result is around 0.26 so that the wage that needs to be paid is IDR 122,000, 00 divided by 0.26, which is about IDR 32,000, 00
Step 2. Estimate anything that can prolong the processing time
If there is a lot of furniture that needs to be moved or if you use more than one color of paint, you will need to increase the processing time. If you believe the project will require additional workers, charge additional fees. For example, if you paint a 60.34 m2 room with two colors of paint, add IDR 16,000.00 to the cost of wages. Thus, the wage that needs to be paid becomes IDR 48.000, 00. Other factors that also need to be considered are:
- Is a big ladder/scaffolding needed or not.
- Do you have to work overtime or not?
- Is there a wall that needs repair or not.
Step 3. Consider the potential for accidents
Unfortunately, painting projects don't always run smoothly. There could be parts of the house that are damaged, paint spilled, and so on. Therefore, it would be better if you give extra space in the estimated time and cost of work. You can set an extra tariff of IDR 10,000, 00 – IDR 20,000, 00 to reserve for accidents, even up to IDR 50,000, 00 if the risk is big.
Step 4. Calculate the total cost
Once all the cost components have been calculated, add them up to get a rough estimate. For example, for a room with an area of 60.34 m2, the estimated price is around Rp. 850.000, 00. And to save for an accident, you can set a price of Rp. 870.000.00.
Step 5. Get professional help to estimate the price
If you hire a painter, trying to calculate the cost yourself is not necessarily a wise move. Ask for prices from several different contractors while explaining your needs and the size of your work area. That way you will get a more accurate price rate.
