Laffy Taffy is a semi-soft taffy candy produced by Nestle, under the Wonka Candy brand. Laffy Taffy comes in a variety of fruit flavors and is usually pastel in color. You can make your own Laffy Taffy at home with a candy thermometer and some fruit drink mixes.
Ingredients
- 500 grams of sugar
- 3 tbsp corn flour
- 200 ml corn syrup
- 300 ml water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp butter (and extra butter for greasing)
- 1 pack of fruit drink powder (eg Kool-Aid)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Step
Part 1 of 3: Cooking Taffy
Step 1. Grease two large baking pans with butter
Set aside.
Step 2. Choose your favorite fruit drink mix
The type of drink mix such as Kool-Aid that you use will result in the taste of Laffy Taffy. For example, wine-flavored powder will produce grape-flavored taffy.
If you prefer to make a distinctive taffy flavor, opt for a food flavoring extract, such as "watermelon" or "banana" instead of a packet of fruit drink powder
Step 3. Place a large metal pot on the stove
Add sugar and corn flour.
Step 4. Add syrup, water, butter and salt
Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon. Reduce the stove heat to medium heat.
Step 5. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat
Attach the candy thermometer to the side of the pan. Cook your taffy, stirring, until it reaches 121 degrees Celsius.
Step 6. Remove the pan from the heat when it reaches 121 degrees Celsius
Enter and stir along with one packet of powdered drink extract.
For a creamy taste, add 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract along with food flavorings
Part 2 of 3: Pulling Taffy
Step 1. Pour the hot taffy batter into the baking pan
The dough will form a thin layer. Let the dough rest for 15 minutes, until it's cool enough to hold
Step 2. Cut the wax paper into squares to hold the taffy
The paper must measure 7.5 cm by 7.5 cm.
Step 3. Ask a friend to help you stretch the taffy
Wash your hands and then grease them thoroughly with butter.
If possible, ask two more people to roll out the other taffy pan at the same time
Step 4. Grab the taffy from one of the baking pans
Ask your friend to pull the other end away from you. Then, pull back the end you're holding.
Step 5. Repeat the step of stretching the taffy until it becomes harder and lighter in color
It will take about 15 minutes to stretch the taffy properly.
Part 3 of 3: Wrapping Laffy Taffy
Step 1. Cut off small pieces of stretched taffy with clean scissors
Step 2. Roll the candy pieces with your buttered hands
Step 3. Place the rolled taffy in the center of the square-shaped wax paper
Fold the bottom down and the top up. Turn the sides of the paper.
Step 4. Store your wrapped taffy candy in an airtight container
Place it in a cool place to prevent it from watering.
