Did you know that a plate of delicious cakes can also be made without the aid of an oven? The trick, you just need to pour the cake batter into the pan, then put the pan into a regular pan or a high-pressure electric pan. To use a pressure cooker on the stove, first remove the whistle and gasket. Then, don't forget to monitor the temperature in the pan so the cakes don't end up burning! Want a more practical process? Use a high-pressure electric pan that has the setting and temperature adjusted. Voila, these delicious oven-free cakes are ready to eat!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Preparing the Dough and Pan
Step 1. Mix cake batter in a bowl
Follow the steps listed in your favorite cake recipe or make instant cake dough according to the instructions on the package. In fact, the size of the cake dough does not need to be changed even though the baking process is carried out using a high pressure pan.
Step 2. Select the type of pan to use
In general, you can use pans made of metal, pyrex glass, or silicone, as long as they are large enough to fit in a pressure cooker. Some pan sizes you can consider:
- For 3-liter pressure cooker: Baking pans measuring 8x8 cm, 10x8 cm, 10x10 cm, 13x8 cm and 15x8 cm.
- For a 6 liter high pressure cooker: Baking pans measuring 8x8 cm, 10x8 cm, 10x10 cm, 13x8 cm, 15x8 cm and 18x10 cm.
- For 8 liter high pressure pans: Pans measuring 8x8 cm, 10x8 cm, 10x10 cm, 13x8 cm, 15x8 cm, 18x10 cm, 20x8 cm and 20x10 cm.
Step 3. Grease a baking sheet with oil or butter
If you have cooking spray or cooking oil in a spray bottle, you can also spray the entire surface of a round or flat baking sheet with the product. If you don't have one, you can grease the surface of the pan with plain or plain butter and sprinkle a few tablespoons of flour on top. After that, don't forget to tap the pan to spread the flour over the entire surface of the pan. Then, shake the pan upside down over the trash to remove the excess flour.
Step 4. Fill the pan with cake batter
Pour all the batter into the prepared pan. After that, smooth the surface with a spoon or a flat spatula so that the level of doneness can be more evenly distributed when baking.
Method 2 of 3: Using a High Pressure Pot on the Stove
Step 1. Remove the gasket and lid of the pot
Since this method does not require the use of water, you can remove the rubber insulator attached to the lid of the pot along with the whistle.
Generally, water does need to be added to a pressure cooker. If you skip this option, it means the cake will be baked instead of steaming. Therefore, use this method only if the pressure cooker being used is stainless steel or aluminum
Step 2. Put 300 grams of salt in a saucepan
Make sure the salt is sprinkled evenly over the bottom of the pan. Since you're not using water, it's the salt that will act as an insulator for the pan.
Step 3. Place the placemat on the bottom of the pan
The metal tray placed on the bottom of the pan serves to distribute the heat more evenly and prevent the bottom of the cake from burning while baking.
If you don't have metal coasters, place a wire rack in the bottom of the pan
Step 4. Heat an empty pressure cooker on high for 2 minutes
Cover the pot and turn on the stove over high heat. Let the pan heat up before adding the batter to the pan.
Step 5. Put the cake pan with the cake batter into the pan, then close the pan tightly
Previously, put on heat-resistant gloves, then gently place the cake pan on the placemat. Then, close the pan tightly to start the roasting process.
Step 6. Reduce heat to medium and bake cake batter for 5 minutes
The cake batter should expand and cook as soon as it is exposed to the very hot temperature of the pan.
Step 7. Reduce the heat to low again, then bake the cake for the time indicated in the recipe
Because you don't really use the pressure in the pan, actually the baking time of the cake can be adjusted to the time you bake it in the oven. Follow the instructions listed on the recipe or package of instant cake dough to get maximum results.
Step 8. Check the level of doneness of the cake
To do this, try piercing the inside of the cake with a toothpick. If no dough sticks when you remove the toothpick, turn off the stove immediately. If this condition has not been reached, continue baking the cake and check the condition again after 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 9. Cool and remove cake from pan
Once the cake has cooled, remove the pan from the pan.
Method 3 of 3: Using a High Pressure Electric Pot
Step 1. Pour 240 ml into the pot
Once the water has been poured, place a metal trivet in the bottom of the pan so that the cake pan doesn't come into direct contact with the bottom of the pan.
Step 2. Place the cake pan with the cake batter into the pan
Make sure the bottom of the pan is placed on the trivet.
Step 3. Cover the pot tightly
Cover the pot and turn the handle counterclockwise until you hear a 'click' sound. Most pressure cookers won't work unless they are properly closed.
Step 4. Set the settings to create a cake with a high temperature
Turn on the pressure cooker, then select the setting to make the cake. If your pan doesn't provide this option, use manual settings for high-temperature cooking.
Step 5. Adjust the temperature according to the type of cake you are making
If the cake is light and fluffy, such as a sponge cake, use a lower temperature or generally labeled "Less". Meanwhile, most standard cake batter or instant cake batter can be cooked at normal temperature. If you want to make a thicker, bronze, or cheesecake texture, increase the temperature or select the "More" setting.
Step 6. Reduce the baking time stated in the recipe by half
Check the recommended cake baking instructions based on the type of pan you're using. Once you know the recommended baking time, reduce that time by half if the cake will be made in a pressure cooker.
For example, if the baking time stated in the recipe is 50 minutes, simply cook the cake in a pressure cooker for 25 minutes
Step 7. Release the pressure from the pan for 10 minutes
After the temperature of the pan cools, the pressure inside will automatically decrease. After the valve that was originally popped down, turn the pan handle clockwise, then open the lid.
Step 8. Check the level of doneness of the cake
To do this, all you have to do is pierce the center of the cake with a toothpick. If there is no dough sticking to the toothpick when you remove the toothpick, the cake is perfectly cooked.
- Different sized pots will take different time to fully release the pressure inside. However, in general, the pan needs to be allowed to sit for 10 to 40 minutes.
- If the cake is not completely cooked, cover the pot and turn it back on. After 5 minutes, check the level of doneness of the cake again.
Step 9. Cool the cakes for 5 minutes, then remove the pan from the pan
Before removing the pan from the pan, wait for it to cool down first. Then, put on heat-resistant gloves and lift the cake tin with the help of two food tongs. After that, flip the cake over on a wire rack to cool completely.
