Making a mermaid costume is fun and easy. The right mermaid costume will make you look like a goddess from under the sea. If you want to know how to make a mermaid costume, just follow these easy steps.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Mermaid's Tail
Step 1. Make a skirt
Collect 5.5 meters of green organza fabric. The size of the skirt that you make must fit and match your waist and legs.
- Cut the green cloth into a square shape based on your body size.
- Use hot glue to connect the ends of the fabric to make a tubular skirt.
- The back of the costume will be the lining.
- If you have more time, you can sew it using thread in the same green color as the fabric.
Step 2. Purchase a few sheets of light, stretchy fabric
This cloth will be used as the fin. The color of the fabric can be light blue, dark blue, shimmery or metallic. You can use fabrics with only one color or with many colors.
Step 3. Cut the fabric into a square about 0.9 meters by 0.9 meters
Pinch the top of the box and twist the fabric.
Step 4. Using a pin, pin the fabric to the skirt
The skirt must lie flat on the table.
Step 5. Twist the fabric a few more times until it appears to shrink
Step 6. Iron the cloth
Step 7. Lift and shake the cloth gently, as when cleaning a handkerchief
Step 8. Repeat this process until you have at least 6 sheets of elastic fabric that have been ironed
Step 9. Glue the elastic to your skirt
Using hot glue, apply the glue at different points around the center of the skirt and glue the elastic sheets together. The fabrics should be taped to the full and hang at the bottom of the skirt.
The cloth should be affixed to the calf just below your knee. These fabrics can be hung at the same or different heights for variety
Step 10. Draw scales on the skirt
Use gold fabric paint to draw scales all over the skirt. Each scale can measure about 5.08 to 7.62 cm and should be shaped like an inverted C.
Step 11. Dry the skirt
Wait for the paint and fins to dry before you try on your new costume.
Method 2 of 3: Making a Mermaid Top
Step 1. Use a skin tone tank top or bikini
The tank top or bikini must have a cup to make the material look thick.
Step 2. Place it on the table
Step 3. Place a small bowl under the cup to support the top
Step 4. Gather the large, light shells
A few shells of white and sandy brown will suffice for this costume.
Step 5. Use hot glue to attach the shells to the cup
Glue a scallop or two. Repeat this process until the cup is completely covered by the clams.
Step 6. Dry the top
Step 7. Decorate the shells with glitter or gold paint
Do this gently. You can also use gold paint that is already equipped with glitter!
Method 3 of 3: Completing the Mermaid Appearance
Step 1. Make your hair like a mermaid hair
Make your hair look wavy and sandy. You can even make your hair look a little wet, like you just came out of the ocean.
If you have one, wear a scallop headband or headband. You can also wear starfish clips in your hair
Step 2. Apply mermaid-style makeup
The mermaid makeup should make you look natural and beautiful. To look right, you don't need to wear too much makeup.
- Wear light pink lipstick.
- Use eye shadow with soft colors like blue, green, and purple.
- To highlight your eyes, use silver or blue mascara. If you're wearing black mascara, make sure not to use it too thickly.
- Use light makeup on your facial skin.
Step 3. Put on the mermaid shoes
Your shoes should be simple and beachy. Since mermaids don't wear shoes, your skirt should cover most of your feet. Don't draw people's attention to your feet.
- Wear pretty sandals with shells on them.
- Wear brown shoes or other neutral colors.
- Paint your fingernails and toenails with a soft pink nail polish.
- Avoid high heels.
Step 4. Add mermaid accessories to your costume
Mermaids don't have much time to wear accessories because they are busy swimming, but there are some accessories that you can wear to complete your mermaid look. Here are some accessories to try:
- Wear a mood ring or necklace (a ring or necklace whose color can change depending on the mood of the wearer).
- Use a small coral bag.
- Wear coral and shell jewelry.
Tips
- If you can't collect shells yourself, you can buy them at a craft store.
- Buy more fabric than you need so you don't run out of fabric if you make a mistake.
