This wikiHow teaches you how to send a fax using a Google Chrome extension and a Gmail account, and use an existing subscription fax service to send faxes via Gmail. This method can be a good option if you need to fax someone, but don't have a fax machine. You can't send faxes through the Gmail mobile app, as well as send them for free unless you use the free trial version of the fax service.

Method 1 of 2: Using WiseFax
Step 1. Make sure you are using Google Chrome browser
If you're not using it, open a new Chrome window and return to this article before continuing.
Step 2. Visit the WiseFax extensions page
Click on the link provided to visit the page.
Step 3. Click ADD TO CHROME
It's a blue button at the top of the WiseFax extensions page.
Step 4. Select Add extension when prompted
It's at the top of the page. After that, the WiseFax app or extension will be installed.
Step 5. Click the WiseFax icon
It's a blue arrow pointing to the right in the top-right corner of the Chrome window. A new tab will open and load the WiseFax page.
Step 6. Press the Click here to select the document button
It's at the bottom of the page. Once clicked, a File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window will open and you can select the document.
Step 7. Select the document you want to send
Click the document that needs to be sent, then select " Open " The document will be uploaded to the WiseFax page.
Step 8. Click the Continue button
It's at the bottom of the page.
Step 9. Enter the recipient's fax number
Type in the fax machine number, then click “ Continue ”.
Step 10. Click Sign in with Google account
It's at the top of the page.
Step 11. Select an account
Click the Gmail address you want to use to sign in to the WiseFax service.
If you're not logged into the appropriate account, type in the email address and password for the account when prompted. You may need to click “ Use another account ” first at the bottom of the page.
Step 12. Click Buy required number of fax tokens
It's a blue button at the bottom of the page. After that, a pop-up window will be displayed.
If the window doesn't open, make sure you've set Chrome to allow pop-up windows
Step 13. Enter your credit or debit card details
In the pop-up window, enter the name on the card, card number, expiration date, security code, and billing address.
You can also click “ Other Methods ” in the upper right corner of the window to select “ PayPal " or " Amazon ” as a payment method.
Step 14. Click Pay
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. Once clicked, the fax will be sent to the number you previously entered. However, you may still need to confirm the action when prompted.
You'll see the fees you need to pay (in dollars, such as “ $1.00 ”) to the right of the “button Pay ”.
Method 2 of 2: Using an Existing Fax Service
Step 1. Make sure you have an online fax account
Create an account or register your email address with an online fax service first if you haven't already.
You will need to use the free trial version of the paid service if you want to send faxes for free. Therefore, make sure you cancel your subscription before the trial period ends to avoid being charged
Step 2. Open Gmail
Visit https://www.gmail.com/ on a computer. The Gmail inbox page will load if you're already signed in to your account.
- If not, enter your account email address and password before continuing.
- You can't send faxes from the Gmail mobile app.
Step 3. Click COMPOSE
It's a gray button in the upper-left corner of your Gmail inbox.
Step 4. Enter the destination fax number and service extension
Type the number you want to send the fax to in the " To " field, then enter the service extension used (eg RingCentral).
- For example, if you're using RingCentral, type [email protected] into the "To" field.
- You will need to add the country code to the beginning of the fax number if you want to send a fax overseas.
Step 5. Add a cover page if you want
Type the cover page into the "Subject" field. If you don't need a cover page, you can leave this field blank.
Step 6. Upload the fax document
Click the paperclip icon at the bottom of the email window, then select the fax document and click “ Open ” to upload it.
You can also type information in the main segment of the email window if you want to send a text-only fax
Step 7. Click Send
It's a blue button in the lower-left corner of the email window. Once clicked, the fax will be sent to the previously assigned number.
Tips
- The main advantage of most online fax conversion services is that you don't need a landline or fax machine to send or receive faxes.
- You can also use a service like CocoFax to send faxes directly from Google Drive (eg Google Docs or Google Sheets documents).
