Mewtwo is one of the most famous and elusive Pokémon in the history of the Pokémon series, and finally Mewtwo can be caught by everyone in Pokémon X and Y. You'll need to defeat the Elite Four first, and even so, Mewtwo is still very much worth getting. These Psychic-type Pokémon will be a strength addition to your competitive team, as well as making the after-game part a lot easier. Check out Step 1 below to learn how to catch Mewtwo and add him to your team in Pokémon X and Y.

Step

Step 1. First of all, prepare yourself

Mewtwo is at level 70 and knows the skills of Psychic, Aura Sphere, Barrier (increases his defense), and Recover (restores half his blood). You need a Pokémon that is stronger than Mewtwo. Get an Ice-type Pokémon to freeze it, a Pokémon that has the Sing skill, or another Pokémon capable of granting status conditions to your opponent. In a fight like this, you need strategy more than strength. Do not using Toxic. Toxic deals more damage with each turn, so Mewtwo will die quickly if you're not careful. When you are ready, move on to the next stage.

Step 2. Defeat the Elite Four

You must defeat the Elite Four and complete the main storyline before you can get Mewtwo. Read the following guide (in English) for detailed information on forming the best team to beat the Elite Four:

Step 3. Prepare the Poké Ball to fight with Mewtwo

Mewtwo is hard to catch, and you'll need lots of Ultra Balls, 5 Timer Balls, or a Master Ball. Dusk Balls and other types of Poké Balls are useless.

Step 4. Understand the catch ratio of each ball

Ultra Balls are ineffective, but 40 Ultra Balls may be enough. Dusk Ball is completely ineffective. The Timer Ball is effective if the battle has been running for at least 15 rounds. Master Balls are always successful at catching Pokémon--but you'll probably need them for another occasion.

Step 5. Form your team

Mewtwo is at level 70, which means you're going through a tough fight. Make sure that you have a team that can withstand Mewtwo's attacks and be able to injure Mewtwo until its blood is reduced enough to be captured.

Step 6. Go to Pokémon Village

You can find Mewtwo outside of Pokémon Village. Pokémon Village is only accessible via Route 20 in Kalos.

Step 7. Find the cave at the edge of the village

Walk left once you reach the village until you reach the river bank. Use Surf, then walk over the river until you find a waterfall. Go to the land located to the right of the base of the waterfall. Walk to the right until you reach a cave.

The cave entrance will be blocked until you become a Champion, by defeating Diantha

Step 8. Save the game

Once inside the cave, save your game. If you accidentally kill him, you can restart the fight. Don't worry about leaving before you talk to him: Mewtwo will stand in the cave until the fight occurs.

Step 9. Talk to Mewtwo

After saving the game and making sure that everything is ready, approach Mewtwo and talk to him. After the short story snippet, the battle will begin! If you plan to use the Master Ball, go for it and reduce the blood.

Step 10. Aura Sphere inflict 80 damage to your team and will definitely get hit. Psychic deals 90 damage. Barrier increases its defense drastically. Recover recovers his blood by half. The strategy you can use is to let it use up all of its skills or give it a sleep or freeze state.

Step 11. Start throwing Poké Balls

When Mewtwo is almost dead, it's time to throw a Poké Ball at him. Ultra Balls are not guaranteed to work (Unless you throw them up to 40 units), so you'll likely have to throw quite a few balls before you can catch them. If Mewtwo recovers, use your Pokémon to reduce its blood again before throwing another Poké Ball.

Step 12. Mewtwo will be successfully captured when the thrown Poké Ball sways 3 times and becomes dark in color

Mewtwo will be a powerful addition to your team when caught! You can only get one Mewtwo in the game, so be careful not to let it go.

Tips

  • Timer Balls can come in handy if the fight has been going on long enough.
  • If you feel that the team is not ready, then don't face it. Mewtwo won't leave the cave until you talk to him.

Warning

  • If you don't catch him and kill him instead, then Mewtwo will leave. Defeat the Elite Four again to get Mewtwo back.
  • Don't use skills like Toxic. Mewtwo will lose a lot of blood in each round, so you can kill it.
