Mewtwo is the strongest Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen. Because of this, it's also the most difficult to find and catch. Here are a few steps to catching Mewtwo so you're one step closer to becoming a Pokémon Master!
Step
Don't confuse it with Mew.
Step 1. Defeat the Elite Four
You can't catch Mewtwo unless you beat the Elite Four and become a Pokémon champion. You can catch Mewtwo after completing a quest on One Island.
Step 2. Obtain the National Pokédex from Professor Oak
You need to catch 60 Pokémon before this Pokédex is given to you.
Step 3. Fix Network Machine by finding Ruby and Sapphire (see below)
If you're playing Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or HeartGold, SoulSilver, you can go straight to the cave in Cerulean City
Part 1 of 3: Getting Ruby
Step 1. Go to One Island
You need a Pokémon that knows Surf. Talk to Celio and he will explain that you need items for the machine.
Step 2. Head to the Mt. Bucket
On the lower right side of the area, you'll see some Rocket members. You will hear the first password to enter Rocket Warehouse. Fight with them, and enter the cave.
Step 3. Continue down to the bottom level
You don't need to read braille. You will requires a Pokémon that has Strength to get through the cave.
Step 4. Grab Ruby and exit
You can use the escape rope, or " Dig ", or the path you entered earlier.
Part 2 of 3: Obtaining Sapphire
Step 1. Go to Six Island and find the Dotted Hole, which can be seen on the Town Map
At the entrance, read the braille sign. You'll see "Cut," so make sure you bring a Pokémon that knows Cut.
If you haven't saved Lorelei from Four Island, a scientist will stand in your way
Step 2. Inside the cave, look for a braille sign
This sign will tell you which hole you need to drop into. If the sign has 2 symbols, it means go to the top. If there are 5 symbols, go to the right. If the symbol is 4, it means go left or down. If you are wrong, this process will be repeated from the beginning.
Step 3. Find Sapphire at the base level
Don't get excited just yet, a nerd will take it first. He will then give you a second password to enter the Rocket Warehouse..
Step 4. Go to the Rocket Warehouse
On Five Islands. You need to defeat all members of the Rocket team to reach the boss.
Step 5. Find the Sapphire thief nerd in the last room
Beat him. Once defeated, you will get Sapphire.
Step 6. Go to One Island
Give Ruby and Sapphire to Celio, the man who operates the machinery on this island. He would connect the Kanto and Hoenn territories using a signal and pave the way to Mewtwo..
Part 3 of 3: Finding Mewtwo
Step 1. Go to Cerulean City
In the upper left corner of the city, you will see a newly opened cave. Walk north onto Route 24 and use a Pokémon that knows Surf to head for the entrance.
Step 2. Go through the maze in the cave to get to the ground floor
Make sure your team of Pokémon is high level as there are plenty of strong Pokémon here (levels 46-70).
Step 3. Find Mewtwo at the end of the path. Save your game before battling Mewtwo because this is your only chance to catch it and it's a very powerful Pokémon. Visit the Tips section to see some of the methods for catching Mewtwo. Provide at least 50 Ultra Balls.
Tips
- Save the game before the fight and repeat the fight until you succeed.
- Give status effects to Mewtwo. Freeze and Sleep work best for Mewtwo, but you can also use paralysis.
- If you don't want to use Master Balls, prepare at least 70 Ultra Balls. You can also use the Timer Ball as its effectiveness increases as the fight goes on. However, Mewtwo is still elusive.
- Capturing a high-level Ditto in a cave can be effective against Mewtwo because Ditto will copy all of Mewtwo's moves.
- The easiest way to catch Mewtwo is to use the Master Ball, which is obtained from the president of the Silph Co. In Saffron City. |master Ball has a 100% success rate regardless of the Pokémon's level and life.
- Since FireRed/LeafGreen, higher level Pokémon can use False Swipe which will help you a lot. False Swipe is a Normal type move that will never defeat the enemy until KO. Parasect is very useful because it has a Spore that is 100% accurate (compared to Sleep Powder). In Pokémon HG/SS, False Swipe is a TM that can be purchased at the Supermarket, but in FR/LG, you must breed a male Scyther or Nincada with a female Paras or Parasect at Four Island Daycare.
- Try filling your entire team with powerful Pokémon level 65+. Mewtwo will be at level 70 when you encounter it. Various types of Pokémon to carry, but don't bring poison and fighting types.
- Set up Tyranitar at least level 56+. Mewtwo's special attack named "Psychic" has no effect on Tyranitar. Keep throwing Ultra Balls until you finally catch Mewtwo. Note that if you use this method, a Tyranitar ability called Sandstorm can defeat Mewtwo, so try bringing along a Pokémon that has other weather manipulation abilities.
- One strategy for catching Mewtwo is to have a Pokémon that knows 'Sludge Bomb' and 'Sleep Powder'. Start by putting Mewtwo to sleep, then continue to use 'Sludge Bomb' until Mewtwo's HP is low. Be careful not to accidentally poison Mewtwo. Then, keep throwing Ultra Balls at Mewtwo (if Mewtwo uses Safeguard, switch Pokémon until you can put it back to sleep).
- Use Farfetch'd which knows False Swipe. Get it by exchanging Spearow in vermilion.
Warning
- Save your game. You only have one chance to catch Mewtwo.
- Some Pokémon in Cerulean Cave (aka Unknown Dungeon) don't allow you to escape. Be careful!
- You can easily get lost in Cerulean Cave. Use the map if necessary
- Max Repels works on the Pokémon in the cave. However, if your active Pokémon is below the level of a wild Pokémon, Repel will not work. For best results, place the strongest Pokémon in your team's active position.
