Do you want fuller and voluptuous lips? While there is no definite way to permanently increase lip size, there are several short and long term methods that can be used to increase lip size, shape, and volume. Read on for this article to learn about the available options.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Using a Lip Plumper
Step 1. Buy a lip plumper (a product that makes lips look fuller)
This product is sold in various forms: gloss, balm, stick, gel, and packaged in containers. Applying it on the lips can make them appear full for a while, and this is because the product acts by irritating the lips.
- The full effect only lasts for a few hours, but can be renewed by reapplying it on the lips.
- Remember, the effect is not as good as the shape of the lips treated with cosmetic surgery.
Step 2. Know which lip plumper ingredients to look for
Some ingredients, such as ginger, cinnamon, wintergreen, mint, and capsicum can increase blood flow to the lips, which causes them to become red and swollen - this makes them appear fuller.
Step 3. Use a lip plumper as a base makeup
If you want to combine the lip plumper with lipstick or gloss, apply the plumper first on the lips to get maximum effectiveness.
Step 4. Avoid using too much lip plumper
Dermatologists (skin disease experts) recommend not using a lip plumper excessively because it can make lips dry and flaky. Try using a lip plumper for a special occasion.
Step 5. Look for information about the treatment plumper
If you want to get greater benefits from lip enlargement products, try using a treatment plumper. The manufacturer claims that the plumper treatment can stimulate the lips to produce more elastin and collagen, which makes lips fuller in the long run.
- Treatment plumpers can be found on the internet or beauty supply stores. This product is more expensive than a regular plumper.
- The ingredients that are usually found in treatment plumper products include marine collagen, peptides, and human growth substances.
Method 2 of 5: Make Lips Look Bigger with Makeup
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
If you want to use makeup to make your lips appear bigger, you'll need a lip liner or lip crayon; lipstick or lip crayon that is the same color as the lip liner, but with a lighter tone; lip gloss; highlighting balm or powder; and a lip scrub (you can use a toothbrush).
- To get a natural look, use lipliner and lipstick with nude shades. If you want a dramatic look, choose bright red or pink shades.
- Dramatic color will instantly make lips look plumper and prominent.
- Some makeup manufacturers produce double-sided lip crayons in complementary shades. This is a good option.
- You may find matte lipsticks and crayons easier to use, especially if you want to have bold, natural lips.
Step 2. Exfoliate your lips
Get a toothbrush with soft bristles, and take about 20 seconds to gently massage the dead skin on your lips. It makes the lips a bit swollen, and also feels dry.
- You can also exfoliate your lips with sugar or a damp washcloth.
- Some dermatologists recommend against exfoliating your lips because they can dry out and crack over time.
- You can exfoliate your lips occasionally if your lips are flaky and you need to use lipstick (for example, when you have to attend a formal event). Try to avoid this action as much as possible.
Step 3. Apply a moisturizing balm on the lips
You can use any balm, but be sure to avoid ingredients that are waxy or too heavy as they won't moisturize your lips, but will only trap the moisture that's already there.
Make sure the lips have been smeared with balm evenly. Let the balm soak in for a few minutes before you apply the lip liner
Step 4. Line the lips with a lip pencil that has a darker color
Lining your lips is a great way to make your lips appear bigger. For a natural look, line the outer edge, or the outer edge of the lips.
Don't go too far from your natural lip line, as this can make you look like a clown
Step 5. Fill in your lips
Use a darker pencil to fill in the corners of the lips, and a lighter shade of lipstick/crayon to fill in the center of the upper and lower lips.
Some people suggest filling in the entire lip with a lip pencil to give the base an even base. Experiment with different lip resurfacing methods to find the method that works best for you
Step 6. Blend the dark and light colors
Don't let there be an unattractive border around the lips. Blend it all together for a natural look. You can do this using your fingers, a cotton swab, or a lip brush.
Step 7. Apply lip gloss all over the lips
You can use a clear gloss or one that is the same color as your lip color.
Step 8. Apply a small amount of highlighter (a product that makes lips glow) on the center of the lower and upper lips
Apply a small amount of cream, balm, or highlighter powder on your fingers, then apply the product to the center of your lower and upper lips.
- Shiny eyeshadow can also be used as a highlighter.
- After applying the highlighter on the lips, gently rub your finger on the lips so that the color is evenly mixed.
Step 9. Enjoy your full plump lips
Method 3 of 5: Caring for Lips
Step 1. Drink enough water
When dry and chapped, lips will appear thin. Make your lips look fuller and healthier by taking better care of them. The first step to do this is to consume enough water.
A popular method often used to determine the amount of water to drink in a day is to calculate your weight in pounds (1 pound = 0.45 kg) and divide by two. The result is the amount of water in ounces (1 ounce = 30 ml) that must be drunk in a day
Step 2. You should drink more water if you live in a hot climate or do sports
Or in other words, if you sweat more than usual.
A woman who weighs 150 pounds (68 kg) should drink about 75 ounces (2,200 ml) of water every day
Step 3. Avoid licking the lips
When you lick your lips, your tongue will spread acidic saliva. This can strip your lips of natural oils and cause irritation.
Step 4. Avoid smoking
Smoking can make the lips darken and irritated, and cause wrinkles around the mouth. If you are a smoker and find it difficult to quit, at least try replacing it with e-cigarettes, which are not as toxic to the lips as regular cigarettes.
You can reduce lip discoloration due to smoking by massaging almond oil and coconut oil on your lips every day
Step 5. Apply a moisturizing balm on the lips
If your lips are dry or chapped, apply a lip balm regularly. Even if your lips aren't chapped, try applying a lip balm with SPF to protect them from the sun's damaging rays.
- If you have sensitive lips, you may have to do some testing before finding the right lip balm. Some people prefer to use natural balms that contain honey and coconut oil, while others prefer to use balms that contain menthol.
- Do not use lip balms that contain beeswax, unless your lips are well hydrated. The beeswax lip balm is too heavy to provide moisture to the lips. This material simply traps the moisture that is already there.
Step 6. Apply SPF on the lips
If you only apply one ingredient to your lips, it should be SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Sunlight can make lips dry and chapped, which makes them look thinner than they really are.
- Glossy products such as lip gloss can actually multiply the power of sunlight so that it harms the lips more than the condition of the lips that are not smeared with anything.
- Dermatologists have warned that using lip gloss without SPF can damage lips and lead to skin cancer.
Step 7. Avoid exfoliating your lips
Exfoliating (exfoliating) may make lips feel smooth in the short term, but can damage lips if done regularly. Instead of exfoliating, you should keep your lips hydrated.
Unlike ordinary skin, lips are formed from a sensitive mucous membrane. If this membrane is in good health, lips will naturally feel smooth
Step 8. Avoid products that cause allergic reactions
If you have taken good care of your lips but they are still chapped, you may have an allergic reaction to an object used on or around your lips:
- Salty and citrus-containing foods can irritate your lips.
- Some toothpaste products can irritate the lips. If you suspect that your lip problem is caused by toothpaste, try switching to a toothpaste that doesn't contain alcohol or sodium laurel sulfate.
- Be wary of strong-smelling facial products, which can stick to your lips and cause irritation.
Method 4 of 5: Doing Lip Exercises
Step 1. Do lip exercises every day
It may take you up to 4 weeks to see results so you should be prepared to wait. It may be a good idea to take a lip shot before doing the exercise to track your progress. This is very useful for motivating yourself.
- Aim to do lip exercises for a few minutes, 1-2 times a day. You can do the exercises described in this article, or you can choose other exercises available online.
- There are plenty of instructional videos on lip augmentation exercises that you can follow.
- Although many people say that they have achieved the desired effect, there is no scientific research to support that lip exercises can actually enlarge the lips.
Step 2. Make sure the lips are well hydrated
Doing lip exercises when your lips are dry and cracked can actually cause them to tear and/or bleed.
If your lips are slightly chapped, drink plenty of water and apply a good quality lip balm, then wait a few days for your lips to heal before you start exercising
Step 3. Make a kissing motion
Place your hands in front of your face and place your lips on your palms as if you were going to kiss. Keep your lips on your hands for a few seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times.
Step 4. Smile and kiss 5 times
Sit up straight with your mouth closed, then smile as wide as you can. Do this for 15 seconds, then relax yourself. After that, purse your lips and push them out as far as possible to form a kissable face. Do this 10 times.
- After smiling and pursed lips, hold this position for at least 30 seconds, then relax and draw your lips in, allowing your teeth to gently press against your lips. Hold this position for about 10 seconds.
- Repeat the whole process 5 times.
Step 5. Smile while folding your lips inward
Bend your lips inward past your teeth, then lift the corners of your mouth to form a smile. Hold this position for at least 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
Step 6. Do the lip pressing exercise 10 times
Press your lips to form a straight line. Create resistance to this movement by imagining something is holding you from pressing your lips. Do this movement against the pressure for about 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
Step 7. Pretend to rinse your mouth
Close your mouth and lightly purse your lips. Gently move your lips from left to right while puffing out each cheek. It makes you feel as if you are gargling. Repeat this action 10 times.
Try moving your lips to form a figure 8, back and forth in both directions
Step 8. Make a face like a duck's mouth
Press the lips together, then raise them towards the nose. Hold this position for about 5 seconds, and repeat 10 times.
Step 9. Exhale
Inhale deeply, then tighten your cheeks and shape your lips into an "O" shape as you prepare to exhale. Exhale gradually, doing 2-3 exhalations to expel all the air.
Step 10. Act as if you are blowing out a candle
Perform this action with maximum movement, namely by stretching the lips outward as far as possible. Relax your lips, and do this movement 5 times.
Step 11. Rest
If your face, mouth, or lips feel sore after you do this exercise, rest. Just like other muscles, facial muscles can also experience fatigue. You can get injured if you force your muscles too hard when they are tired.
Method 5 of 5: Trying Cosmetic Procedures
Step 1. Think before doing something
If you really want to have voluminous lips and have tried everything to no avail, maybe it's time to undergo a lip augmentation procedure.
- Before opting for a lip augmentation procedure, check out other methods, read reviews and experiences of others on the internet, and consult with several different doctors.
- Since the lip augmentation procedure is quick and non-invasive, you may be tempted to make a quick decision. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, the decision to do it must be carefully thought out because it will have a long-term effect on your appearance and health.
Step 2. Understand what lip augmentation is
Lip augmentation is a procedure performed by injecting dermal filler into the lips and around the mouth.
- Dermal fillers commonly used today contain ingredients similar to hyaluronic acid, which occur naturally in the body.
- In the past, the dermal filler used was collagen, but now it is not the main choice because now there are options that are safer and can last longer.
- A fat graft is a procedure performed by transferring fat from other parts of the body into the lips through liposuction. It requires a longer healing time when compared to other methods because it is the most invasive.
Step 3. Understand what is involved with the lip augmentation procedure
Lip augmentation is a procedure that can be done quickly in a doctor's office with little or no downtime:
- Your lips may be anesthetized before the injection.
- Next, the doctor will mark the area to be injected before he injects it with a small needle.
- After the injection, the lips will be put on ice to relieve discomfort and swelling.
- You should not use any product on the lips immediately after undergoing the enlargement procedure. Ask your doctor about what to put on your lips, and when.
- An exception to the quick lip augmentation procedure is fat injection, which requires liposuction to remove fat from one part of the body for injection into the lips.
Step 4. Understand the risks
Hyaluronic acid fillers are less likely to cause allergic reactions because they are made of materials that are similar to substances found in the body. However, there is still the possibility of an allergic reaction.
- Common side effects include bleeding, redness and pain at the injection site, and bruising and swelling.
- Serious side effects that may occur include severe and prolonged swelling and bruising that can last for more than a week, lips becoming asymmetrical; swollen lips of an irregular shape; infection; and ulcers and scar tissue that makes the lips stiff.
- The specific ingredients in dermal fillers will depend on the product used. Some fillers contain lidocaine, which can cause an allergic reaction.
Step 5. Discuss all possible allergies with your doctor
If you think there are fillers that can cause allergies in you, consult your doctor before you undergo the procedure.
Tips
- Use dark and light eyeshadow to make your lips look fuller. Apply a highlighter or bright eyeshadow on the cupid's bow. The cupid's bow is the indentation in the center of the upper lip, which forms the letter "m". Next, apply a matte brown shade under the lower lip. This will be opposite the location where you applied the light color.
- Use lipstick with a light color. Dark colors make the size of the lips look small, and maybe a bit too much. Good choices among these are bright pinks, peaches, and nudes.
- If you don't want to have cosmetic surgery, don't have a lip plumper, or don't have the time to spare, just use an eyeshadow that's a shade darker than your skin (like the color you use to remove wrinkles from your eyes, contour your face, etc.), and apply just under the lips, around the area where the lower lip meets the skin. This will create a sort of shadow under your lips, which will make your lips appear thicker and appear thicker.
Warning
- Stop using lip plumper products if you suffer from prolonged burning, discomfort, redness, or swelling.
- Lip augmentation procedures can cause side effects such as: pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, discomfort, lumps, infection, and irregular lip shape. Do not do lip augmentation unless you can accept the risk of this side effect.
- If you are having a lip augmentation procedure, see a doctor immediately if you have extreme swelling or fever.
