As a bookworm, have you ever struggled to find the perfect bookmark for your favorite novel? Don't worry, you can make bookmarks according to your taste so you won't lose any more pages from reading your novel. See how to make bookmarks out of paper, magnets, beads, and more below.
Step
Method 1 of 7: Traditional Book Border
Step 1. Select the appropriate paper material
Prepare a strong paper such as cardboard or cardstock and choose a picture or pattern as a decoration to be glued to your paper. You can use a collage of several papers or pictures to decorate your bookmarks.
Step 2. Cut the paper
The size of the bookmark is adjusted to your needs. You can make the bookmarks small and protruding (3cm long) or traditional sizes 5-7.5cm long. Do not make bookmarks that are more than 15 cm long because they will be too big for the book. You don't want bookmarks sticking out from the bottom or top of your book.
Step 3. Add the details
Use paper or decorative images that have been selected. Cut and glue your decorations on the cardboard. Try using wrapping paper or page clippings from magazines for an easy way to decorate your bookmarks.
- Add glitter or stickers to make it more lively.
- Draw a picture with a marker or write your favorite aphorisms, phrases, or quotes with a pen on the bookmarks. You can also draw or write on wrapping paper or pictures that have been glued to cardboard.
- Make a collage of pictures cut from magazines in stacks onto cardboard bookmarks. You may use a private collection of images.
Step 4. Wrap your bookmarks
So that the bookmarks are durable and do not get damaged quickly, cover the bookmarks with protective plastic. If possible, laminate your bookmarks.
- You can also use broad tape to cover both sides of the bookmark.
- Consider using a liquid epoxy gel or similar and scrubbing both sides of the bookmarks. Coat one side first and let dry before moving on to the next.
Step 5. Give the finishing touches
Use a hole punch to punch holes in the top of the bookmark. Prepare a 15-20 cm long ribbon and fold it in half. Thread the ribbon figure through the bookmark hole and tie it with both tails of the ribbon to make a knot.
- Use several ribbons that vary in color and texture.
- Attach beads to the ends of the ribbon for a luxurious feel. Slide a few beads through the ends of the ribbon and tie the ends of the tails together so they don't come loose.
- Burn both ends of the ribbon so the threads don't dangle. The fire will melt the plastic in the ribbon so that when it dries the threads come together.
Method 2 of 7: Beaded Ribbon Book Border
Step 1. Prepare the ribbon and beads
Use a thin, soft, wire-free tape. You can use beads in a variety of sizes and patterns. Also have a talisman ready to hang from the end of your ribbon.
Step 2. Cut the ribbon
Cut the ribbon to a length of 105 cm and use a lighter to burn both ends of the ribbon to prevent the threads from dangling.
Step 3. Attach the beads
Insert a row of beads that you want to hang from the bottom of the bookmark. If you're using an amulet, thread it through the center of the ribbon and then fold the ribbon in half so that the beads can be threaded through the two tails of the ribbon.
- If you're not using an amulet, insert one bead into the center of the ribbon, then fold the ribbon in half. After that insert the remaining beads from both ends of the ribbon.
- Make a knot at the base of these beads when all the beads are inserted.
- Leave an empty 25 cm of ribbon, then tie another knot with both tails of the ribbon. Add the beads you want to insert into the top of the bookmark, and tie one more knot to prevent the beads from coming loose.
Step 4. Use your bookmarks
Fold in the center of the ribbon so that it creates a figure-like space between the two strands of ribbon. Tuck the ribbon into the book so that the ribbon is on the page you want to border, and the other is on the front cover of the book. Thus the book pages will be marked safely.
Method 3 of 7: Paper Corner Bookmarks
Step 1. Create an example
Draw a 12 cm x 12 cm square on paper using a pencil. Use a ruler and divide the square into four equal rectangles. Then, delete the square on the top right so that what remains are three rectangles that make up the letter 'L'
Step 2. Divide the top-left square diagonally from the bottom-left corner to the top-right corner of the square
The square is now divided into two triangles. Do the same for the square on the bottom right.
Step 3. Fill in the triangle
Use a pencil to color the top and bottom triangles. The result will look like the image.
Step 4. Crop your image
Cut along the lines of your uncolored drawing. This means that the two color-filled triangles are not included in your bookmarks. As a result, your slice will resemble an arrow pointing to the left, as shown in the image.
Step 5. Use this piece as an example to create a bookmark
Place your cut on wrapping paper or cardstock, trace the cut and cut out according to the pattern.
Step 6. Fold the pieces
Fold each triangle on both sides of the square. The two triangles should overlap and again make a square shape.
Step 7. Shape the bookmarks
Glue the triangle on top, and attach it to the top of the bottom triangle to make a kind of pocket. If you want, cut the square base along with the bottom of the triangular pocket to make it symmetrical. If not, your bookmarks are ready!
Step 8. Decorate your bookmarks
Add additional details on the front and back of your bookmarks. Draw a picture or write a quote or lyrics to your favorite song. If you are satisfied with the result, tuck it in the corner of the book page.
Method 4 of 7: Paperclip and Ribbon Bookmarks
Step 1. Prepare some patchwork
Use as much fabric as you want, as long as it is at least 12 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Apply a little hardener to the fabric to make it stiff for the ribbon-making process.
Step 2. Cut the fabric
To make the ribbon, you will need three pieces: a loop for the ribbon, one for the tail, and a middle loop to hold it all together. Cut strips for ribbon 2 cm wide and 12 cm long. The cut for the tail is 2 cm wide and 9 cm long, and finally the middle piece is 0.5 cm wide and 4 cm long.
Step 3. Merge the pieces
Fold the longest strip to form a loop, and use a little glue to hold the ends together. Pinch the loop in the middle and place the tail piece in the center of the back of the loop. Wrap the smallest piece vertically around the other two pieces to create a classic ribbon shape, and tie a knot.
Step 4. Add paper clips
Attach the wide end of the clip to the back of the ribbon where the knot is. Take a small piece of patchwork, and wrap it so the ends meet around the paper clip behind it. Use glue to hold the ribbon, paper clip and center strip together.
Step 5. Use the bookmarks
Allow the glue to dry for a few moments, then insert a paper clip over the pages of the book you want to border. The tape will stick out from the top, so be careful not to damage it.
Method 5 of 7: Magnetic Book Border
Step 1. Select the paper
For this bookmark, thick cardstock paper in any pattern or texture is required. You can choose additional decorative paper above the bookmarks after installation is complete.
Step 2. Cut the paper
Make a strip of paper 15 cm long and 5 cm wide. Then, fold the paper right in the middle so that the length of the paper is halved.
Step 3. Attach the magnet
Prepare two pieces of magnets or magnetic paper that you can buy at a book or craft store. Cut the magnets to a size of 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm, then glue each magnet on the inside on each opposite side (according to the picture). When the paper is folded in half, the magnets must meet and touch each other.
Step 4. Decorate your bookmarks
Glue additional decorative paper to the front and back of your bookmarks, or simply put your favorite picture or quote on the paper. You can also glitter your paper. Seal the bookmarks with a liquid gel medium to prevent the paper from being damaged or the magnets coming off.
Step 5. Use your bookmarks
Pinch the page you want to border with a bookmark until the magnet sticks. To keep bookmarks from falling, tuck them near the spine rather than the edges.
Method 6 of 7: Highlighter and Glue Bookmarks
Step 1. On a clean plastic or glass surface, color your bookmark design with a highlighter
Step 2. Cover your design in white PVA glue
Step 3. Wait for it to dry
It takes about 2 days.
Step 4. Gently peel off the dry glue from the plastic/glass surface
Your barrier is ready.
Method 7 of 7: Foam Bookmarks
Step 1. Cut a bookmark-sized rectangle from the foam
Step 2. Decorate as desired
For example, use photos of your pets, relatives or friends, etc. Or, you can add ribbons, glitter, etc.
Step 3. Add edges to the foam
Make a border with colored marker or sew wool thread along the edge of the foam.
Step 4. Add the tassels
This step is optional, but you might like it.
Step 5. Done
Use this bookmark as often as you want. Or, make some more borders to serve as gifts.
Tips
- You can use children's pictures as bookmarks for story books.
- Book borders can be made from old greeting cards or invitations.
- If you are making a lot of bookmarks at once, use large laminated plastic to laminate all the bookmarks together to save time and money.
- If the beads have large holes, the ribbon may need to be knotted a few times to keep the beads from coming loose.
- Purchase tassels from a craft store if you don't like heavy tasseled beads. Tie a small feather at the end of the ribbon, using a plain ribbon or no tassel at all.
- You can download many examples and pictures of bookmarks on the internet.
- You can also add snippets of magazine pages.
- This activity will increase your creativity and save money.
- You can also take a note card, fold it in half so that it is long and the blank is facing out, and flatten the fold a few more times. After that draw or color anything on the blank side. When you're done, wrap it with tape.
