This wikiHow teaches you how to activate the voice chat feature on your Fortnite account. After enabling the feature, you can adjust the microphone volume and start talking directly to your teammates in the game. You can use the voice chat feature on all Fortnite platforms.

Method 1 of 3: On PC
Step 1. Connect a headset or microphone
Connect a microphone or headset to the speakerphone on the microphone port of your computer or laptop. If you are using a wireless headset, connect the device to the PC via Bluetooth.
Step 2. Click the Fortnite icon
This icon is blue with the letter “F” in it. You can find it in the “Start” menu on a Windows computer, or the “Applications” folder on a Mac.
The first time you open Fortnite, the game will display a cinematic animation. Going forward, Fortnite will immediately display the game selection page
Step 3. Select a game mode
There are three game modes that you can choose from. “Save the World” is a paid game mode. Meanwhile, "Battle Royal" and "Creative" you can play for free.
Step 4. Click the icon
This icon looks like three horizontal lines. You can find it in the top right corner of the screen. After that, the game menu will be displayed.
Step 5. Click Settings
This option is the first option in the menu on the right side of the screen.
You can access this menu at any time during the game by pressing the Esc key
Step 6. Click the speaker icon at the top
You can find this icon in the navigation bar at the top of the page. After that, the audio settings will be opened.
On some versions of Fortnite, this button may be labeled “ Voice ”.
Step 7. Slide the Voice Chat switch to on or "On"
Click the arrow next to the "Voice chat" option in the menu at the bottom of the screen to activate the voice chat feature. After that, the feature will be activated. Now, you can talk through your computer's headset or microphone, and chat with your teammates in-game.
Step 8. Adjust the voice chat volume
Use the blue bar next to "Voice Chat volume", at the top of the screen to adjust the voice chat volume. Click and drag the bar towards the left to lower the volume. Drag the bar to the right to increase the volume.
Step 9. Enable or disable the “Push to Talk” feature
The “Push to Talk” feature requires you to press a button on the headset in order to chat with teammates. Click the arrow next to “Push to Talk” to turn the feature on or off. By default, the “Push to Talk” feature is not enabled.
Step 10. Select a channel
Use the arrows next to " Default Channel " to select the primary channel. canal " party ” allows you to have a voice chat with people who have already been invited to the lobby. Option " Games ” allows you to chat with anyone in the match.
Step 11. Select a voice chat device
If you can't hear a friend's voice or talk through voice chat, you'll need to select a different input or output device. Click the arrows next to " Voice Chat Input Device " and " Voice Chat Output Device " to change the device.
Step 12. Mute (or turn on) the other player's sound
In the middle of the game, you can mute or re-enable other players' voices whenever you want. Use the following steps to mute or unmute another player's sound.
- Press Esc.
- Click the arrow icon to the right of the player in question, on the left side of the menu.
- Click " Mute " or " Unmute ”.
Method 2 of 3: On Game Console
Step 1. Connect a microphone-equipped headset to the console
Use the following steps to connect the headset to the game console. Bluetooth headsets are not supported by major game consoles.

PS4:
Connect the headset to the 3.5 mm port on the lower end of the controller.

Xbox One:
Connect the headset to the 3.5 mm port on the lower end of the controller.

Nintendo Switch:
Connect the headset to the 3.5 mm port on the top right side of the Nintendo Switch console. Fortnite is one of the games on the Nintendo Switch that doesn't require the Nintendo Online mobile app for players to use the voice chat feature. This feature is easiest to use when you're playing Fortnite in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch.
Step 2. Open Fortnite
Check the "Fortnite" option on the home screen or console, then press the "X" button on the Playstation 4, and the "A" button on the Xbox One or Nintendo Switch to start the game.
Step 3. Start the game
When opening the game for the first time, you will be prompted to press the “X” button on the Playstation 4, and the “A” button on the Nintendo Switch or Xbox One to start the game.
Step 4. Select the game mode
There are three modes to choose from. “Save the World” is a paid mode. Meanwhile, the "Battle Royal" and "Creative" modes can be played for free.
Step 5. Open the menu
To open the menu, press the Options button on the Playstation 4, on the Xbox One, and + on the Nintendo Switch. They're in the top-left corner of the action buttons, to the right of the controllers on all consoles.

Step 6. Select Settings
This option is the first option on the menu. Check the “Settings” option and press the “X” button on the Playstation or the “A” button on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
Step 7. Mark the speaker icon
This icon is the fourth option at the top of the settings menu. Press the right and left shoulder buttons on the controller (“L” and “R”, “L1” and “R1”, or “LB” and “RB”) to switch from one icon to another. The speaker icon is in the “Audio” menu.
Step 8. Enable the “Voice Chat” feature
Press the directional keys or move the left stick to switch to the “Voice Chat” option in the “Audio” menu. After that, press the left or right directional keys, or move the left stick to enable/disable the voice chat feature.
Step 9. Adjust the voice chat volume
Press the up and down arrow keys, or move the left stick to mark the blue bar next to "Voice Chat Volume". Press the left arrow key or slide the control stick to the left to lower the voice chat volume. Slide the stick to the right or press the right arrow key to increase the volume of the voice chat.
Step 10. Enable or disable “Push to Talk” feature
If the “Push to Talk” feature is enabled, you must press a button on the headset to be able to talk to your teammates. Press the up or down arrow key, or move the left stick to mark the “Push to Talk” option. After that, press the left or right arrow key, or swipe the left stick to enable/disable the feature.
Step 11. Select the main channel
Use the arrow keys or the left stick to mark the main channel (“Default Channel”). Press the left or right arrow button, or slide the left stick to change the selected channel. canal " party ” allows you to have a voice chat with people who have already been invited to the lobby. canal " Games ” allows you to chat with anyone who is part of the match.
Step 12. Mute or unmute player sound during game play
You can mute or unmute other players in the game with these steps:
- Press Options, +, or to open the menu.
- Select the player in question in the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Choose " Mute " or " Unmute ”.
Method 3 of 3: On Mobile Devices
Step 1. Open Fortnite
Touch the Fortnite icon on the home screen or app menu to open the game. You will see a cinematic animation the first time you run the game. After that, you will be immediately taken to the player/team (party) page.
- You can download Fortnite for free on iPhone and iPad from the App Store. On Android devices, you can download Fortnite from the official website. You may need to allow the installation of apps from unknown sources in order to install Fortnite on your Android device.
- You don't need a headset to voice chat on the mobile version of Fortnite, but you can connect a headset with a microphone to the device's 3.5mm port, or pair a wireless headset with your device via a Bluetooth connection.
Step 2. Touch
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen. The menu will be displayed afterwards.

Step 3. Touch Settings
This option is the first option in the menu on the right side of the screen.
Step 4. Touch the speaker icon
It's in the top center of the screen. After that, the “Audio” menu will be opened.
Step 5. Swipe the screen and activate the voice chat feature (“Voice Chat”)
To activate it, swipe up on the screen and touch the arrow icon next to "Voice Chat".
Step 6. Adjust the voice chat volume
To adjust the volume, swipe or drag the blue bar next to "Voice chat volume". Drag towards the left to decrease the volume. To increase the volume, drag towards the right.
Step 7. Enable or disable the “Push to Talk” feature
If enabled, you need to press the button to have a voice chat. Swipe the screen and touch the arrow icon next to “Push to Talk” to enable or disable the “Push to Talk” feature.
Step 8. Select a channel
Touch the arrow icon next to " Default Channel " to select a voice chat channel. canal " party ” allows you to have a voice chat with people who have already been invited to the lobby. canal " Games ” allows you to chat with anyone who is part of the match.
Step 9. Select a voice chat device
If you can't hear or speak in voice chat, you may need to select a different audio input and output device. Click the arrows next to "Voice Chat Input Device" and "Voice Chat Output Device" to change devices.
Step 10. Mute or turn on player sound during game play
You can turn the sound off or on for each player during the game. Follow these steps to mute or re-enable player sound in the game:
- Tap the three-line icon in the upper-right corner of the screen (☰).
- Touch the player in question in the menu on the right side of the screen.
- Choose " Mute " or " Unmute ”.
