This wikiHow teaches you how to tame every tamable animal in Minecraft. Such animals include horses, donkeys, mules, ocelots (dwarf leopards), wolves, and parrots. They can be tamed on any version of Minecraft, including PC, Pocket Edition (PE) and console versions.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Taming the Horse, Donkey and Mule
Step 1. Look for additional sources
While it's not necessary to tame a horse, donkey, or mule, the following items can help:
-
Saddle – Saddle allows you to control the horse once it is tamed. You can ride it, but you can't control a tame horse without a saddle. Saddles can be found in village blacksmith chests or chests in dungeons.
You can't make a saddle yourself
-
Apples – Prepare about 20 apples so you can feed the horse before taming it. This significantly increases the likelihood that the horse can be tamed in one or two tries.
Golden apples can speed up the process of taming horses
Step 2. Find a horse, donkey, or mule
These animals are most commonly found in the plains and savanna biomes. However, you can also find these animals in NPC villages (non-playable characters).
Step 3. Approach the animal with nothing in hand
Horses, donkeys, and mules aren't wild, but you shouldn't be holding anything in order to ride them.
If you want to feed the animals, just hold the apple
Step 4. Select the animal
Right-click the animal (PC), use the left trigger (console), or press the "Mount" button when near the animal (PE). Automatically, you will ride the animal.
If you want to feed an animal, select the animal with the apple until it stops eating, then select the animal again with your bare hands
Step 5. Wait for the animal to drop you off
The horse, donkey, or mule will hold you from one to several seconds before finally throwing you off and starting to walk away.
Step 6. Keep selecting the animal until you see a red heart icon
Once the animal stops throwing you, a red heart icon will appear around it. This icon indicates that the horse, donkey or mule has been successfully tamed.
Step 7. Place a saddle on a domesticated horse, donkey, or mule
If you want to put a saddle on an animal, ride the animal first, press the E key, and move the saddle to the " Saddle " box in the animal inventory.
- In Minecraft PE, ride the animal, touch the button “ ⋯ ”, touch the saddle, and touch the " Saddle " icon on the animal.
- On the console edition of Minecraft, ride the animal, touch the “ Y" or triangle, select a saddle, and tap the " Saddle " icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Method 2 of 4: Taming the Ocelot
Step 1. Collect raw fish
You'll need some raw (not cooked) fish to tame the ocelots:
- Make a fishing rod.
- Search the water area.
- Prepare a fishing rod.
- Select a water area.
- Repeat the process until you have caught at least 10 fish.
Step 2. Look for the ocelot
You can usually find this animal in the jungle biome (Jungle), although the nature or behavior of its appearance indicates that the ocelot is near a grassy area at sea level (or higher).
Ocelots become hard to find if you surprise them. You may need to search for quite a while before the animal is found
Step 3. Do not rush to approach the ocelot
You can approach the ocelot as it walks away. However, it soon stops when he turns his face to you.
As a hint, make sure there is about 10 blocks between you and the ocelot
Step 4. Remove the raw fish
This fish should be held before you move on to the next step.
Step 5. Let the ocelot approach you
A few seconds after the fish is held, the animal will begin to approach you.
It is important that you do not move at all at this stage
Step 6. Select the ocelot repeatedly until it turns into a cat
Once this animal is within range, right-click (PC), use left trigger (console), or touch and hold the ocelot until it turns into a cat. At this stage, the ocelot has been successfully tamed.
Method 3 of 4: Taming the Wolf
Step 1. Kill Skeleton ghosts (living skeletons) to get bones
Skeleton ghosts can be found in dimly lit places or situations, such as in caves or at night.
- Be careful when killing this ghost. Skeletons can easily kill you if you are not armed with a sword.
- You may need to kill a few ghosts before one of them drops a bone.
Step 2. Look for the wolf
Usually wolves are found in the taiga region, as well as forest biomes in the Java and Legacy Console editions of Minecraft.
Step 3. Prepare the bones
Make sure you're holding it before moving on to the next step.
Step 4. Approach the wolf
Walk towards the wolf with the bone in your hand.
Although not naturally aggressive animals, wolves will attack if you attack them first
Step 5. Select the wolf until a leash icon appears around its neck
Right-click, use the left trigger, or touch and hold the wolf until the collar appears. You only need to do this step a few times.
- If you accidentally hit a wolf while trying to tame it, it will attack you and can no longer be tamed.
- The wolf will also tilt its head to the side and sit down after being tamed.
- The tamed wolf will not disappear from the game.
Method 4 of 4: Taming the Parrot
Step 1. Collect at least five seeds
You can collect acorns by destroying piles of grass, although there's a chance you'll need to dismantle several piles to get a single set of seeds. Once you have about five seeds, you can move on to the next step.
In the console edition of Minecraft, these seeds are called "wheat seeds"
Step 2. Look for the parrot
Usually, you can find parrots in forest biomes. These animals are small, have colorful hair, and often fly short distances.
Step 3. Prepare the grains
Make sure the grains are in place before you move on to the next step.
Step 4. Approach the parrot
If the bird flies away before you get close to it, simply chase it. Parrots can not fly long distances and high speed.
Step 5. Select the bird until a heart icon is displayed around it
Once the grain is held, right-click, use the left trigger, or touch and hold the bird until a red heart appears around it. This icon indicates that you have successfully tamed it.
Step 6. Place the parrot on your shoulder
By walking "over" the bird will jump onto your shoulder and stay there until you sleep on a mattress or ride a horse (or similar animal).
Tips
- You can also put a saddle on a pig, although this animal is uncontrollable.
- Before breeding animals, you must have tamed the animal first.
- Most of the domesticated animals will always follow you.
- You can look for horse armor in dungeons, hides, and Nether strongholds. Unfortunately, you can't make this shirt yourself.
- Parrots act like radar by imitating sounds in their environment and telling you what's near you.
