There are four types of iPods available in the market: iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle. Each type of iPod consists of several different generations. Each device has a slightly different method of turning it off, but to turn it on, you usually need to press and hold the power button until the device turns on. This article will cover how to turn on each type of iPod.

Determining an Existing iPod Type
Step 1. Before doing anything, connect the iPod to the charger
It's possible that the iPod won't turn on because it doesn't have battery power. Connect iPod to computer or power adapter, then turn it on. If the iPod is working, you don't need to specify the type of iPod you have.
Step 2. Find out if the existing device is an iPod Touch
If the iPod has a touch screen, it is an iPod Touch.

Step 3. Find out if the existing device is an iPod Nano
If the device is small, but still has a screen, it is an iPod Nano. Different generations of iPod Nano have different form factors as well.

Step 4. Find out if your existing device is an iPod Classic
If the device is larger and rectangular, but doesn't have a touch screen, it's an iPod Classic.

Method 1 of 4: iPod Touch and iPod Nano Generation 6 and 7
Step 1. Make sure the device battery is fully charged
When the device is off, you cannot know the remaining battery charge. If you're not sure if your device's battery is charged and if these steps don't work, connect your iPod to your computer.
Step 2. Turn on the iPod
The “Sleep”/“Wake” button is in the upper-right corner of the device. Press and hold the button until you see the Apple logo on the screen. The iPod will be loaded and ready to use.
- When the iPod is on, press the “Sleep”/“Wake” button to turn off the screen and put it into sleep mode so you can save battery power.
- To turn off the iPod, press and hold the “Sleep”/“Wake” button until the power slider appears, then slide the slider to turn off the device.
Method 2 of 4: iPod Classic and iPod Nano Generations 1 to 5
Step 1. Make sure the device battery is fully charged
When the device is off, you cannot know the remaining battery charge. If you're not sure if your device's battery is charged and if these steps don't work, connect your iPod to your computer.
Step 2. Turn on the iPod
Press any button to turn on the iPod.
To turn off the iPod, press and hold the play/pause button
Method 3 of 4: iPod Shuffle
Step 1. Make sure the device battery is fully charged
If you're not sure if your iPod is on, connect the device to your computer.
Step 2. Turn on the iPod
At the top of iPod Shuffle, you'll find the switch. If the switch is green, the iPod is on. If you don't see the green indicator, the device is still off. Slide the switch to turn on iPod Nano.
Slide the switch in the opposite direction to turn off the device
Method 4 of 4: Trying Other Solutions
Step 1. Make sure the “Hold” switch is in the off position
If you have an iPod Classic or iPod Nano generation 1 to 5, the “Hold” switch may be in the locked position, preventing the device from turning on. If the switch displays an orange indicator, it is in the locked position. Slide the switch to the open position. After that, try restarting the iPod.
Even if it is in the open position, there is a possibility that the “Hold” switch will still prevent the device from turning on. Slide the switch from the open position to the locked position, then change it back to the open position
