This wikiHow teaches you how to send text messages via WhatsApp. You can do this on iPhone and Android devices. As long as the recipient has WhatsApp installed on their device and has WiFi access, they can receive and respond to your messages from anywhere in the world.

Method 1 of 2: On iPhone
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
Tap on the WhatsApp app icon which is blue with the outline of a speech bubble and a white receiver.
Use the App Store on your iPhone to download WhatsApp if it's not already available
Step 2. Touch Chats
It's a speech bubble icon at the bottom of the screen. The “Chats” page will open and you will be able to see all the chat entries that are currently available.
If WhatsApp immediately displays a chat window, touch the “ < ” in the upper left corner of the screen to access the “Chats” page.
Step 3. Touch the “New Chat” icon
This icon looks like a pencil on a piece of paper. You can find it in the top right corner of the screen.
You can also open an existing chat by touching it. If you want to open an existing chat, skip the next step
Step 4. Touch the contact name
After that, a new chat window with the selected contact will be opened.
You can also touch" New Group ” at the top of the page to create a new chat group, or select “ New Contact ” to add the contact's phone number.
Step 5. Enter the message
Type a message into the field at the bottom of the screen.
You can also upload a photo by touching the camera icon and selecting a photo from the gallery or iPhone camera roll
Step 6. Touch the “Send” arrow
This icon looks like a blue paper airplane next to the text field. After that, the message will be sent.
Method 2 of 2: On Android Device
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
Tap on the WhatsApp app icon, which looks like a green and blue conversation bubble with the outline of the handset inside.
Use the Google Play Store on your device to download WhatsApp if it's not already available
Step 2. Touch CHATS
This tab is at the top of the screen. After that, the “Chats” page will open.
If WhatsApp immediately displays chats, tap the “Back” button in the upper left corner of the screen to return to the “Chats” page
Step 3. Touch the “New Chat” icon
It's a speech bubble icon in the top-right corner of the screen, just to the left of the “ ⋮ ”.
- On some Android tablets and smartphones, the " New Chat " icon is in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- You can also select an existing chat by touching it. If you selected an existing chat, skip the next step.
Step 4. Select a contact
Touch a contact's name to start a new chat with them.
You can also touch the “ New group ” at the top of the page to start a group chat, or select the human silhouette icon in the top right corner of the screen to add a new contact.
Step 5. Enter the message
Type a message into the field at the bottom of the screen.

This icon looks like a white paper airplane on a green background. After that, the message will be sent to the selected contact.
