Planning to go on a long trip with multiple stopovers? This wikiHow teaches you how to add multiple destinations on Google Maps, either through the mobile app or on a computer. You can create maps or travel routes with multiple destinations for trips taken by driving, walking, or cycling.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using Google Maps Mobile App
Step 1. Open Google Maps
These app icons look like colorful map markers and you can find them on one of your device's home screens or app drawer, or by searching for them.
Step 2. Touch Go
It's a blue button labeled "Directions" in the lower-right corner of the screen. Once touched, the “Directions” mode will start and you will be asked to select the starting point of the journey and the destination.
The process of adding multiple destinations on an iOS device is the same as the process on an Android device
Step 3. Enter the starting point of the trip
Maps will automatically use the device's current location. You can enter any location by touching the " Your location " field and typing in another location.
Touch "Choose on map" to place a marker on the place you want to select as the starting point of the journey on the map. Slide and zoom in on the map below the marker to place it
Step 4. Touch “Choose destination” and enter the first destination
You can type in an address, search for a place of business or other place, or tap "Choose on map". If you select " Choose on map ", you can drag and zoom the map to place markers at the destination point.
Step 5. Make sure you have selected the mode of transportation (eg driving, cycling, or walking)
Adding multiple points of interest is not supported for travel by transit points or public transportation.
Step 6. Touch (Android) or ••• (iOS).
This three-dot icon is displayed after you enter the starting point and destination of the trip, and the route is displayed on the map, but before you touch the “ Start ”.
Step 7. Touch Add stop
A new column will be displayed under the first destination.
If you don't see this option, the device model may be too “old” to support adding destinations
Step 8. Enter the second destination
You can search for a location or address, or touch " Choose on map " to place a marker on the map.
Step 9. Again add more stopover points (if necessary)
You can enter a maximum of nine goals. Each time you add a destination, a new "Add stop" column will be displayed below the last destination column until it reaches the limit on the number of destinations.
To rearrange the stopover points, you can drag and drop the icon of the two holding lines to the right of the stopover address
Step 10. Touch Done
This blue text appears to the right of the estimated travel time, below the list of stops that have been added.
Step 11. Touch Start
It's at the bottom of the screen. Navigation will start immediately.
Method 2 of 2: Using Google Maps Website
Step 1. Go to https://www.google.com/maps on a computer
The Google Maps website allows you to create a map or route with nine additional points of interest.
Step 2. Click the “Directions” button on the right side of the search field
A sidebar will appear and you can type in the starting point of the journey and the first destination.
Step 3. Select the mode of transportation used
Use the buttons above the sidebar to specify a travel method. You can only add multiple destinations for trips taken by driving, walking, and cycling. You cannot add multiple destinations for routes taken by public transport or by airplane.
Step 4. Enter the starting point of the journey
You can type in an address, place of business, or landmark, or click a specific place on the map. Click "My location" at the top of the search results to use the computer's current location. Your browser may ask you to allow Google Maps to access your current location.
You need to enter a starting point before you can add multiple destinations
Step 5. Type in the first destination
Click the "Choose destination" field and enter a destination, just as you would when you add a starting point for your trip.
Step 6. Click Directions if not already
If you start the process by selecting your destination first (eg clicking a specific place on the map or searching for a destination the first time you open the map), click the circular " Directions " button and select a starting point for your journey. You must enter " Directions " mode with the starting point and destination selected before you can add additional stopover points.
Step 7. Click the + button under the destination
The new destination column will appear below the second destination column.
- Make sure you have set a starting point and a destination for your trip. Otherwise, the "+" button will not be displayed.
- If the "+" button is not available, you may need to close the "Route options" option. You may also choose the wrong method of travel because traveling by airplane and public transport does not support adding multiple destinations.
Step 8. Add a second destination
After clicking the "+" button, enter the second destination as you did when you added the first. The route will be adjusted so that you will be directed to the second destination after reaching the first destination.
Step 9. Repeat the above steps to add another destination
You can re-add destinations with the steps above until you complete the journey. However, you can only choose one mode of transportation for the entire route or journey.
You can add up to 10 locations in total, including the starting point of the journey. If the route must contain more destinations, you will need to create some additional maps for the journey
Step 10. Drag the dots next to each destination to change their order
You can drag and drop the dots next to each destination if you need to change the order of the journey. The calculation of the new route will be done automatically.
Step 11. Click the route you want to use
If there are multiple possible routes for your trip, they will be displayed under the destination, including the overall travel time. Click a route to view the complete route to your destination (including driving directions).
- You can't send a trip route with multiple destinations to a mobile device so that delivery option will be unavailable (obfuscated).
-
Click the " Print " button to print the route using the printer. There are two options available: full map printing or text only directive printing.
- You can also select the “Share” button and share the map link with others via email.
