This wikiHow teaches you how to sort Gmail emails by label. " Labels " is Gmail's version of folders in email accounts. You can create labels and add email to them, either through the Gmail desktop site or the mobile app.

Method 1 of 2: Via Desktop
Step 1. Open Gmail
Visit https://www.gmail.com/ via a web browser. If you are already signed in to your Gmail account, the inbox page will open after that.
If you are not logged into your Gmail account, click “ SIGN IN ” in the upper-right corner of the page, then enter your email address and password before continuing.
Step 2. Select the emails you want to move
Click the box in the far-left corner of each message you want to move.
Step 3. Click the "Labels" icon
It's a bookmark icon at the top of your inbox, just below the search field. After that, a drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 4. Click Create new
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu. After that, a pop-up window will be opened.
If you have already created a label, the label options will appear in the drop-down menu. You can click on the label name to move the selected messages to the label's folder
Step 5. Enter the label name
Type any name for the label in the text field at the top of the pop-up window.
You can also check the " Nest label under " box and select an existing label to make that label a subfolder of other labels
Step 6. Click Create
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. Once clicked, a label will be created and the selected messages will be added to the labels folder.
Step 7. Hide labeled messages from inbox
If you want to hide tagged messages from your inbox, click the " Archive " button (the box with an arrow pointing down at the top of the inbox). The selected messages will disappear from the inbox, but can still be viewed by clicking on the label name in the options tree, on the left side of the inbox.
You may need to move your cursor over the options tree, clicking “ More ”, and/or swipe the screen to find the desired label.
Step 8. Add another message to the label
If you wish to add additional messages to this label in the future, select the corresponding messages by clicking their checkboxes, clicking the " Labels " icon, and selecting the label name in the drop-down menu that appears.
You can also click and drag selected messages to the label names on the left side of your inbox
Method 2 of 2: Via Mobile Device
Step 1. Open Gmail
Tap the Gmail app icon, which looks like a red “M” on a white background. Your Gmail account inbox will open if you're already signed in to your account.
If you're not logged into your Gmail account, type in your Google email address and account password, then tap “ Sign in ”.
Step 2. Touch
It's in the top-left corner of the screen. Once touched, a pop-out menu will appear.
Step 3. Scroll down and tap Create new
This option is at the bottom of the menu. After that, a pop-up window will appear.
Step 4. Create labels
Type in the name of the label, then touch the “ DONE ” in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Step 5. Touch
The pop-out menu will be displayed again.
Step 6. Swipe up the screen and touch Primary
It's at the top of the menu. Once touched, you will be taken back to the main inbox.
You can also touch the inbox” Social ”, “ Updates ", or " Promotions ” at the top of the menu if necessary.
Step 7. Select the messages you want to move to the labels folder
To select it, touch and hold the message until a check mark appears on the left side of the message, then touch the other messages you want to move.
Step 8. Touch
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen. After that, a pop-up menu will be displayed.
On an Android device, touch the “ ⋮ ”.
Step 9. Touch Change labels
It's at the top of the pop-up menu.
Step 10. Touch the label
Once touched, a check mark will appear in the label box at the far right of the screen.
If you have multiple labels, you can touch each label that you want to apply to the selected messages
Step 11. Touch
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen. Once touched, the label will be applied to the selected messages, and the messages will be moved to the appropriate labels folder.
- If you want to hide a message from your main inbox, make sure it's selected, then tap the " Archive " button (the black box with an arrow pointing down) at the top of the screen.
- To review the labels, touch the “ ☰ ”, swipe the screen, and touch the label name. All labeled messages will be displayed on this page.
