Since August 25, 2010, you can call landlines or mobiles via Gmail. Make sure the app for calling is installed, then start calling! This article is for the English-language Gmail website.
Step
Step 1. Open a Gmail account
If you haven't created a Gmail account yet, create one first.
Step 2. Go to "Chat" which is on the left of the Gmail screen
Look for the phone icon that says "Call phone". There is a telephone symbol next to the sentence.
- You must first install and activate the sound and video plug-in.
- If you don't see “call phone” near the chat menu, Google may not have enabled this feature for your account. Google started implementing this feature on August 25, 2010 and it may take a few days to use it.
- If "call phone" is not visible near the chat menu, Gmail's language settings may not be in English. This feature is intended for English-language Gmail settings.
Step 3. Click the "call phone" menu
A box will appear explaining this feature.
The box explains how this feature works. Phone calls in the United States or Canada have been free of charge since 2010. Emergency calls cannot be made via Google Voice
Step 4. Click "Accept" after reading the box
By clicking the button, you understand and agree to Google's terms of service.
Step 5. Locate the call box on the page
- Enter the phone number or name in the contact. Press the keypad to enter a phone number, or type a name to call.
- If you enter the wrong number, press the delete key on the keyboard.
Step 6. Press the blue "Call" button on the call box to start calling
You can call someone's cell phone via a computer wherever they are!
Tips
- Click the flag icon to open a menu with a list of country phone codes.
- Since 2010, making calls to the United States and Canada is free of charge. International calls will be charged at low rates.
- The clock icon represents the call history.
- Click the amount of money to display a menu containing a list of history, tariff information, and options to add balance.
- Google hasn't confirmed whether it will change Google Voice, or keep implementing this new feature as a separate app.
Warning
- Google Voice is a state-of-the-art calling application that cannot receive or make emergency calls. Read the entire Terms of Service.
- If this application does not appear on your computer, you may have to wait. Also, you may have to download a sound and video plug-in to enable this feature. Here is the link to download the plug-in:https://www.google.com/chat/video
- Some users face the problem where they have to install the sound plug-in many times. When trying to make a call, the app prompts the user to reinstall the voice plug-in again. This problem occurs for 5-6 months. Google is aware of the issue, but hasn't looked into it further.
