Good citizens are citizens who are involved in activities in the community and help each other. Good citizens are proud of the region and country they live in and want to make it an even better place. We all want to be considered good citizens, and as long as we put in the effort, anyone can actually do it.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Helping Communities
Step 1. Highly educated
One of the best things you can do to help your community is to get a good education. When you are educated, you can get a good job and can make a greater contribution to the economy in society. You will also gain insight and be able to make good decisions when choosing a leader. Study well in school, get good grades, and try to get into university.
Step 2. Work hard
Working hard is important to being a good citizen, regardless of what your job is. When you work hard, you provide great service to others and also earn money, and both contribute to improving the economic conditions in your neighborhood.
If you are still unemployed, ask someone else to help you find a job or search the internet for work. There are many vacancies out there that you can take
Step 3. Follow the latest news
Read the news and get full information about things that affect you, your environment and your country. Understanding the news fully is at the heart of this step: listen to both sides, and try to be impartial. Most of the issues reported are quite complex and cannot be viewed simply in black and white.
Try to get involved in the planning stage as well. For example, in your neighborhood you will build a building for business such as a mini market. Find out what benefits the business will offer the local community, in terms of environmental, social, health and economic aspects. If you have an opinion, you can convey it to the local district head
Step 4. Share your sustenance
When you are quite successful and have more time, money and materials, give some to the surrounding community for a better society. There are many ways to do this.
- Volunteer in community activities. If you have the time and energy, use that time to organize or participate in a mutual cooperation with other communities, or other social activities that involve many people.
- Help the homeless. You can volunteer at soup kitchens or social care homes to help the homeless stay safe and healthy.
- Charity. If you have excess money and materials, donate it to those in need such as orphanages or underprivileged people you know. Make sure that the person receiving it is in need and will not abuse your alms.
Step 5. Donate your blood
Blood and blood plasma are fluids in the body that are important for saving the lives of thousands of people every day. Due to frequent use, this blood supply is often depleted or deficient. So, it would be nice if you want to donate your blood, especially if your blood type is quite rare, because by donating you can save someone who really needs it.
Donating blood and blood plasma will become even more important in times of natural disasters, as there are many people to be cared for and the need for automatic blood supplies will increase
Step 6. Follow the emergency situation exercises
Learn how to give artificial respiration and first aid, and participate in natural disaster simulations to know how to be prepared and evacuated when a real disaster occurs and help others to save themselves. Perform routine simulations at least once a year to recall the procedure.
Step 7. Create jobs
Create jobs for the local community. It doesn't have to be from a business or a business. Asking people to do simple tasks and paying them properly is enough. By providing employment opportunities, you can reduce unemployment and improve the community's economy.
Ask the poor people around you to help you with heavy housework, such as cleaning the roof or cutting down tree branches that are too thick. In addition to lightening your work, you also end up helping people in need
Step 8. Take care of your health
Keep your body condition to stay healthy. Because when you are sick, apart from bothering other people because they have to take care of you, you also end up spending your own time not contributing anything to society. Exercise, eat a healthy and balanced diet, and keep your body and surroundings clean.
- We provide many exercise guides on the Wikihow website.
- With so many new vaccines that can prevent disease at an early age, it may be helpful to get vaccinated too. Not to reduce your risk as an adult, but to protect unvaccinated children around you.
Part 2 of 3: Active in Civil Activities
Step 1. Cast your vote in the election
The most important thing you have to do as a citizen is to vote in elections. You can indeed become disinterested and just ignore it or just vote in the presidential election. However, all elections that require your vote are very important. Don't let you get a leader you don't want and complain but don't vote for yourself.
Also cast your vote in regional elections, because it is the regional leader who takes care of the specifics of your region or city, from transportation to employment
Step 2. Obey the law
You don't have to be a cop to help enforce the law. Just prevent the violations you see, and don't do anything illegal.
Step 3. Report problems that occur in your area to the local government
Your government will not be able to see all the problems in very detail, and that is your role as a community in monitoring the conditions around you. Report any problems you see around you and the government can fix everything from damaged city facilities to corrupt government agencies.
If you don't know how to contact your local government, try visiting the official website to find out how
Step 4. Actively participate in elections
During elections, it takes a lot of help from citizens to ensure that every vote that comes in can be counted. You can register to volunteer on the electoral commission, or the party of your choosing and help with the counting of votes, as well as fill other supporting positions.
Step 5. Get other people involved
Getting yourself involved and participating in the above activities may be easy. Try to get others to do the same as you, because everyone's participation in society is very important.
Part 3 of 3: Safeguarding Your City's Future
Step 1. Dispose of trash in its proper place
This is an appeal that we often encounter, but is still often ignored by many people. Disposing of trash in its place will make your surroundings cleaner, healthier, and pleasing to the eye.
- Separate organic and non-organic waste. Prepare separate bins for both.
- It would be even better if you could or know a place to recycle waste to reduce landfills.
Step 2. Turn organic waste into compost
Organic waste such as food can be used as compost and can help reduce the amount of waste. Find a place that makes compost, or if you can, make your own.
- Trash that you can compost includes food scraps and food ingredients, and white paper.
- If you want to do it yourself but don't know how, look online for composting.
- The compost you make can be used for plants in your home, or sold to other people. Either way, the trash in your home can eventually be turned into something useful.
Step 3. Clean the surrounding environment
Not littering is easy. However, if you want to contribute more, help clean up your environment by picking up trash that is thrown carelessly and dumping it in its place.
As explained in the previous step, you can even hold mutual cooperation periodically to keep your surroundings clean, or join a cleaning community near you
Step 4. Pay attention to where and how you clean the car
Pay attention to what soap you use. Do not let the soap you use contain harmful substances. Pay attention to the soap you use before buying and using it. And keep your car clean so you don't wash it too often.
- Make sure you wash your car in a place that has a drain, or at least above ground to absorb the water.
- If possible, save on clean water to clean your car, or use products that don't require you to use water.
Step 5. Buy local products
At least, buy your food ingredients from local producers, because it will indirectly prosper the farmers. Moreover, such foodstuffs tend to be fresher so they are delicious when cooked.
- Foodstuffs sold in the market are generally freshly picked ingredients and are usually also sold at lower prices.
- Some people still think that locally made products are of poor quality. In fact, many well-known brands are actually made in Indonesia.
Step 6. Save water
For some people, clean water is a necessity that is hard to come by. So, don't be wasteful and use clean water as needed because elsewhere there are people who need it.
- Don't shower for too long or use too much water. Turn off the faucet when not in use.
- If you have a swimming pool, don't change the water too often if you don't have to.
Step 7. Save electricity
Currently in some areas there are very frequent blackouts. While the state electricity company is trying to increase its power, we as users should also be more frugal when using electricity.
- Turn off lights during the day and other electronics when not in use.
- If you are using a laptop, unplug it if the battery is full.
Step 8. Use public transportation
Stop driving private cars and switch to public transportation. In doing so, you not only help save the Earth from pollution, but also support funding public transportation, which is very important for the lower middle class (who often don't own a private car).
