This wikiHow teaches you how to increase the volume of your computer. Both Windows and Mac computers have a combination of built-in hardware options and system settings that you can use to change the volume. If you're using a Windows desktop computer instead of a laptop, you'll usually need a volume control on the external speakers to turn up the computer volume.

Method 1 of 2: On Windows Computer
Step 1. Use the computer's volume buttons or loudspeaker
All laptops have a volume control button located on one side. Press the “volume up” button (usually indicated by the symbol “ + ” on or near the button) to increase the computer volume.
Desktop computers usually use separate speakers so you will need to use the player or the “volume up” button on the speakers if you are using these computers
Step 2. Use keyboard shortcuts
If your laptop has a volume icon on or above the function keys (eg. F12 ”), at the top of the keyboard, you may be able to press the far right volume button to increase the computer volume.
- On some computers, you will need to hold down the Fn key while pressing the appropriate function key.
- Desktop computer users usually can't use keyboard shortcuts to customize the keyboard, unless they're using a monitor with loudspeakers.
Step 3. Use the “Volume” slider
If you have a laptop, you can adjust the computer volume via the taskbar. Click the volume icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, then click and drag the slider in the window that appears to the right.
Again, desktop computer users usually cannot follow this step
Step 4. Open the “Start” menu
Click the Windows logo in the lower-left corner of the screen.
The following steps are only necessary if you're having trouble adjusting the volume or can't hear audio from your computer using the steps above
Step 5. Open the “Sound” menu
Type in sound, then click “ Sound ” at the top of the “Start” window.
Step 6. Click the Playback tab
This tab is at the top of the “Sound” window.
Step 7. Select computer speakers
Click the “Speakers” option to select it.
You may see the name or brand of the speaker, depending on the loudspeaker device used in the computer
Step 8. Click Properties
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. After that, a pop-up window will be displayed.
Step 9. Click the Levels tab
It's a tab at the top of the pop-up window.
Step 10. Drag the slider towards the right
After dragging, the audio output volume of the loudspeaker will be increased.
If the slider is at 100 percent, your computer's volume has reached its highest/loudest level
Step 11. Save changes
Click OK ” at the bottom of both “Sound” windows that open to save them. Now, the computer volume will sound louder.
Method 2 of 2: On Mac Computer
Step 1. Use the computer keyboard keys
Press the F12 key at the top of the computer keyboard to increase the volume one level.

If your computer has a touchbar, go to
Finder to display the right options, then touch the “volume up” icon on the right side of the touchbar.
Step 2. Use the " Sound " menu on the menu bar
Click the “Volume” icon
in the upper right corner of the screen, then click and drag the volume slider upwards to increase the computer volume.
Step 3. Open Apple menu
Click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
These steps should only be followed if you are having trouble adjusting the volume or can't hear the computer's audio output with the previous steps
Step 4. Click on System Preferences…
This option is in the drop-down menu. The “System Preferences” window will open afterwards.
Step 5. Click Sound
This speaker icon is displayed in the “System Preferences” window. Once clicked, a pop-up window will be displayed.
Step 6. Click the Output tab
This tab is above the “Sound” pop-up window.
Step 7. Click Internal Speakers
It's at the top of the window.
Step 8. Increase the computer volume
Click and drag the "Output volume" slider at the bottom of the window towards the right. The volume of the sound output from the computer speakers will be increased.
- If the " Mute " box is checked, click the box so the computer can play back the sound.
- Close this menu to save the settings.
Tips
- Make sure the volume setting on the application you are using is set to the maximum level. This way, you can increase the volume even further when the device settings are maximized. For example, if you're watching a video on YouTube, make sure the volume slider button in the video window is on the highest position.
- Use external speakers or Bluetooth wireless speakers to increase the volume even further. When connected to a computer or device, loudspeakers can increase and maximize the volume of the audio output.
