This wikiHow teaches you how to enable subtitles on YouTube videos on your computer, phone, or tablet. Some videos on YouTube have closed captions or captions, whether created by the official uploader, contributed by the YouTube community, or automatically translated. You can enable official subtitles or automatic subtitles in English or other languages on various videos.

Method 1 of 2: Via Desktop Browser
Step 1. Open YouTube in an internet browser
Type or paste the https://www.youtube.com link into the address bar, and press Enter or Return on your keyboard.
Step 2. Click the video preview icon
You can open a video from the YouTube main page, user channel, or search bar (“ Search ”) at the top of the page.
- The video will open in a new page.
- Not all videos have captions.
Step 3. Click the CC icon in the lower right corner of the video window
It's next to the white gear icon
in the lower right corner of the video. Closed captions or captions will be shown on the video.
- Click the same button to disable subtitles.
- The currently selected subtitle language will be displayed in the top left corner of the video.
- If there is no such button, the video may not have a caption or closed captions.
- Alternatively, you can press the C key on your keyboard to show or disable captions.
Step 4. Click the white gear icon
in the lower-right corner of the video window.
The video settings will be displayed in a pop-up window.
Step 5. Click Subtitles/CC on the displayed settings menu
A list of all subtitle languages for the video will be displayed.
Step 6. Select the subtitle language
Click the desired language from the pop-up menu. The video caption will automatically be changed to the selected language.
- In some videos, you can select “ Auto-translate ”, then click the desired language. This option uses YouTube's automatic translator feature to create subtitles in the selected language.
- In addition, you can click “ Options ” in the upper-right corner of the "Subtitles/CC" pop-up window, then change the font, color, size, and subtitle format.
Method 2 of 2: Via YouTube Mobile App
Step 1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device
The YouTube icon looks like a white play button
inside the red square. You can find this icon in a folder, page, or app drawer (“Apps”).
Step 2. Touch the video you want to watch
The selected video will open in a new page.
Not all videos have captions
Step 3. Tap the three dots icon in the top right corner
The video options will appear in the pop-up menu.
If you don't see any buttons in the video window, touch the video to display all control buttons
Step 4. Touch Captions on the menu
It's next to the " CC" in the pop-up menu. A list of all available captions for the video will be displayed.
If you don't see this option in the menu, the video has no caption or closed captions
Step 5. Select the subtitle language
Touch a language in the subtitles list to display it on the video.
