The Kindle app on iPad gives you access to your entire Amazon Kindle library without having to switch from one device to another. You can use the app to read content you've purchased, and you can purchase new Kindle content in Safari through the Amazon store which is delivered directly to your app. You can even transfer different types of files from your computer to the Kindle app on your iPad for reading anywhere.

Part 1 of 6: Kindle App Installation
Step 1. Open the App Store
Tap the App Store icon on the Home page of your iPad to open the App Store.
Step 2. Search for the Kindle app
Do this by typing "Kindle" into the search box in the top right corner when you've opened the App Store and tapping the "Search" button.
Step 3. Install the iPad version of the Kindle app
- Select the Kindle app for iPad.
- Tap the "Get" button next to the Kindle app in the iPad section of the search results.
- Tap "Install".
- Enter your Apple ID password and tap the "OK" button to install the app.
Part 2 of 6: Downloading Previous Purchases
Step 1. Open the Kindle app
Tap the Kindle App icon on your iPad's Home screen to open the Kidle app. This icon appears immediately when the application has been successfully downloaded.
Step 2. Register your iPad to your Amazon account
Enter the username and password for your Amazon account and tap the "Sign In" button.
Step 3. Tap the "Cloud" button located at the bottom of the screen
This will show you any purchases made with your Kindle account.
- If you have never made a purchase, this screen is blank.

- Click here for instructions on adding non-Kindle documents to your Kindle account so you can download them on iPad.
Step 4. Tap on the book cover to start downloading it to your iPad
You can see a list of Kindle books that have been downloaded under the "Devices" button.
Part 3 of 6: Buying New Kindle Content on Your iPad
Step 1. Open the Safari browser on the iPad
You cannot purchase content through the Kindle app due to restrictions from the Apple Store. You must use the Amazon site. Start from your iPad's Home screen and tap the Safari icon.
Step 2. Visit the Kindle Store
Enter amazon.com/ipadkindlestore in the address bar and press Enter.
You must first tap the address bar before you can enter text into it
Step 3. If prompted, log into your Amazon account
Enter your Amazon account information (email address and password) and tap "Sign in using our secure server."
If you've logged in before, you'll be taken directly to the Kindle Store home page
Step 4. Locate the desired Kindle book
You can search by title, author or keyword using the search bar at the top of the screen to find out the latest deals and bestsellers, and more.
To get more information about a product, tap the title to be taken to the product details page
Step 5. Buy a book
On the product details page, tap "Buy" and then "Read now". The book is instantly downloaded to the Kindle app on your iPad and you're taken back to your Kindle app library. Once you've downloaded a book to your device, it's available whenever you want to read it.
- All your purchases are stored in your account as well, so you can download them to all your devices.
- Alternatively, if you want to search for a book, you can tap "Try a sample". You will be given a snippet of text which is directly downloaded to the Kindle app so you can read it before deciding to buy the product.
Step 6. Create a Kindle Store icon on your Home screen (optional)
This icon will take you directly to the Kindle Store.
- Look for the "Share" button in the Safari Menu bar at the top of the screen. The button looks like a small box with arrows popping out of it.
- From the drop-down menu with icons, select the "Kindle Store" icon to add it to the iPad Home screen.
- Tap "Add."
- There should now be a Kindle Store icon on your device's Home screen.
- From the Home screen, tap this icon to return to the Kindle Store.
Part 4 of 6: Adding Non Kindle Content to Your Kindle App
Step 1. Know what can be transferred
In addition to books you buy from Amazon, you can use the Kindle app to read all sorts of other formats available on other computers. The following types of files can be opened:
- Document Files (. DOC,. DOCX,. PDF,. TXT,. RTF)
- Image Files (.jpgG,.jpg,.gif,.png,. BMP)
- E-books (. MOBI only)
Step 2. Download and install the transfer software on your computer
Amazon offers a transfer program for Windows and Mac that lets you send openable files to the Kindle app on iPad.
- PC version can be downloaded at amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/pc
- The Mac version can be downloaded at amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/mac
Step 3. Send compatible documents to the Kindle app
There are three ways to transfer files once you have installed the software. The method is the same for both PC and Mac.
- Right-click (Ctrl-click on Mac) the desired file (can be more than one) and select "Send to Kindle". Select your iPad from your list of devices.
- Open the Send to Kindle application and click the desired file (can be more than one) and drag and drop it into the application. Select your iPad from the list of available devices.
Step 4. Print the document and select "Send to Kindle" as the printer
A new window will open and you can choose which device you want to send this document to.
Part 5 of 6: Reading Kindle Books
Step 1. Go to the "Devices" tab of the Kindle app
This will display all the books you have downloaded to your iPad.
Step 2. Tap the book you want to open
Tap the cover of the book to open it and please start reading.
Step 3. Use the manual for Kindle to learn the details of the Kindle application
Your Kindle app is always updated to improve features and functionality. You can learn more by tapping the Kindle app icon and selecting "Device" at the bottom. Look for the Kindle Manual icon and tap it to open it.
Part 6 of 6: Troubleshooting Purchased Content Not Appearing
Step 1. Make sure your iPad has a wireless or mobile data connection
You need a network connection to be able to receive purchased content.
Step 2. Manually sync the library
If purchased content doesn't appear, you may need to manually sync your library with your purchase history.
Tap the "Synch" button on the Kindle app's main screen
Step 3. Make sure again that your payment information is correct
Your 1-Click payment information must be valid before you can purchase Kindle books from iPad.
- Visit the Kindle Management page on the Amazon site. Can be visited at amazon.com/manageyourkindle
- Click the "Settings" tab.
- Review payment information again and correct any errors. Make sure you've double-checked the payment information as well.
