Voicemail is a system that records messages from callers for later playback. Almost everyone has a voicemail account on their cell phone or landline, but things can get a bit tricky if you can't access your phone or if you've recently switched voicemail systems.

Method 1 of 3: Checking Voicemail on Phone
Step 1. Open your digital voice mailbox via smartphone touch screen
On an iOS phone, tap the Phone app and then look for the box in the lower-right corner of the screen that says Voicemail. Tap this button and your voicemail will appear on the screen. Click any message and press Play to listen to the message. On Android phones, a voicemail icon will appear at the top left of your screen in the Status area if you have unread voicemails. Slide your finger down from the top of the screen to view the notification, then tap New Voicemail. Your phone will call your voice mailbox.
Step 2. Call your phone by typing your own number then enter your pin or passcode if prompted
If you forget the number, you may have to look it up. Many cell phones automatically save your own mobile number in the contact list under the name 'Me'. On iOS smartphones you can search for your mobile number by going to the Settings app and then clicking Phone. For Android phones, tap Settings, About Phone, then tap Status. Your phone number will be listed here.
- Voicemail is sometimes locked for privacy reasons but with a code you create yourself. Once your identity is verified, you will be allowed to access your voicemail.
- Contact your cell phone service provider if you forget your code. They may be able to reset it for you and help you with any other issues. You can find your telephone provider's customer service number by doing an internet search.
Step 3. Press the star (*) or fence (#) button then press the call button to dial your voicemail
Sometimes, you may not need to press the call button but usually you will hear an automatic greeting before you can hear voicemail.
Make sure the key (*) or (*) that really should be pressed. Which key to press and when to press depends on your telephone service provider. Almost all phone companies use one of these two buttons. Try both, and if all else doesn't work, then visit your phone company's website or call customer service
Method 2 of 3: Checking Landline Voicemail
Step 1. Call your Comcast, XFINITY, or landline voicemail by dialing *99
Please note that this method is only useful if you are calling from a landline. You will then be asked to enter your password to access voicemail. Some modern phones allow you to simply press the voicemail button on the phone and then enter the password.
If you're calling from a phone that isn't connected to voicemail, first dial your landline number and then press the fence key (#) when you hear the auto welcome. Enter your password when prompted and you will be allowed to access voicemail
Step 2. If you are an AT&T landline user, dial *98 from your landline to access voicemail
Enter your password followed by a hash sign (#) and you are ready to listen to your voicemail.
- If you're checking voicemail outside your home, you can enter your AT&T Service Access number (1-888-288-8893). You will be asked to enter your ten digit landline number followed by a password, then after that, all you have to do is follow the instructions over the phone and you are ready to listen to your voicemail.
- Press 9 at the start of the greeting, or press the hash (#) when you have finished entering your access number and landline number. Enter your access code. This will allow you to access voicemail.
Step 3. If you are a Vonage landline user, dial * 1 2 3 then enter your pin number to access voicemail
Once you have entered the mailbox, press 1 to listen to new messages. If you are calling from a phone that is not connected to voicemail, first dial the 11 digit Vonage phone number to check the voicemail box then follow the same steps.
Method 3 of 3: Checking Voicemail on the Internet
Step 1. Visit XFINITY Connect online if you are an XFINITY user and enter your User ID and password
Select the email tab, click Voice & Text, then click Voice. From here you will be able to access all your voicemails from your computer.
Step 2. Log in to the Verizon Call Assistant website if you are a Verizon user
Next, enter your username and password. Don't be surprised if the website asks you to authorize Verizon to access your phone recordings. Once you've authorized Verizon, you can select Calls and Messages from the left tab before clicking Voice Mails to access your messages.
Step 3. Download the AT&T Voicemail Viewer app to your smartphone if you are an AT&T user
This app lets you forward voicemail to your email.
Step 4. Visit the Cox Mobile Phone Tools web page if you are a Cox Mobile user
Enter your username and password then press the message tab. All your voicemails will appear there.

- Contact customer service if you have problems or are using a digital landline service that is not listed in this article.
