Knowing how to make BBQ chicken in the oven is a great skill to have, especially when it's raining heavily and you don't have oil to light a fire (to burn), or you just don't feel like using a barbecue. Here's an easy way to make BBQ chicken in the oven, equipped with a delicious barbeque sauce recipe.
Ingredients
Ingredients for Making BBQ Sauce
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon minced or grated garlic
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red chili
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 cups cold water
- 1 1/4 cups apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup concentrated palm sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (English soy sauce)
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 cup tomato paste
Ingredients for Chicken
- 1.5 kg whole chicken
- Kosher Salt
- Ground pepper
- Peanut oil
- Water
- 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves to serve
Step
Method 1 of 2: Preparing BBQ Sauce
Step 1. Mix the ingredients
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Once melted, slowly add the chopped onion and garlic and cook until soft. Sprinkle paprika, ground red chili, chili powder and pepper. Cook for one minute until fragrant.
- Add the remaining ingredients – water, palm sugar, vinegar, molasses, tomato paste and English soy sauce.
- You can shake the sauce for a while to make it smooth and even.
Step 2. Let it boil
Once all the ingredients are in, let it simmer over low heat, uncovered, for about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally. After the sauce thickens a bit, try the taste, adding more seasoning if needed.
Step 3. Save some of the sauce
Set aside 1 1/2 cups of sauce to use in preparing the chicken. Let the remaining sauce cool and refrigerate until the chicken is ready to serve.
Method 2 of 2: Prepare BBQ Chicken
Step 1. Cut the whole chicken
Leave the upper and lower thighs, do not separate. Season the chicken with kosher salt and ground black pepper.
- Do not forget to wash the chicken thoroughly with cold water before use.
- Use a very sharp knife to easily cut the chicken.
Step 2. Preheat the oven
Heat to a temperature of 163 degrees Celsius.
Step 3. Gorena chicken
Heat peanut oil in a 30cm skillet over medium heat. Cook the chicken in portions to fit in the pan. Put each piece with the skin facing against the pan, then turn it over for a while. It usually takes five minutes for the skin to turn golden brown.
- Frying the chicken before grilling removes some of the fat, which enriches the taste of the chicken. Also helps produce a crispy skin in the oven.
- There may be a little smoke when frying the chicken, but don't worry, this is normal.
Step 4. Transfer the chicken to a plate for grilling
Separate the breast pieces from the leg pieces and place them on a different plate, preferably a glass dish. Make sure the skin is facing up. Pour two tablespoons of water in each dish.
Step 5. Add the sauce
Divide one glass of BBQ that has been separated for two plates, making sure each piece is smeared with sauce. Place parchment paper on top of each plate, this will help keep the chicken moist. Then wrap the plate with aluminum foil.
You can use a brush to apply the sauce to the chicken skin if desired
Step 6. Bake
Place the dish in the preheated oven. The legs will take an hour and ten minutes to cook, while the breasts will only take 30-40 minutes.
Step 7. Raise the temperature of the oven and not the cover
Remove the chicken from the oven and raise the temperature to 200 degrees Celsius. Remove the foil and parchment paper and spoon the remaining cup BBQ sauce over the chicken, returning the chicken to the oven for another 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 8. Serve
When the chicken is cooked through, it should be glazed with BBQ sauce and very tender. Reheat the BBQ sauce stored in the refrigerator and pour it into the bowl. Transfer the BBQ chicken to a hiding plate and sprinkle with chopped cilantro.
