Instant potato chips need to be processed first to be prepared into mashed potatoes (mashed potatoes). Decide whether you want to make it in a saucepan on the stove or heat it in a bowl in the microwave. If you are using the stove, heat the water, butter, salt, and milk first before adding the instant potato chips. Stir and beat the instant mashed potatoes with a fork before serving. Consider adding sour cream, garlic powder, cheese, or spices for added flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 ml) water
- tsp. (1 g) salt
- 1½ tbsp. (21 g) butter or margarine
- cup (120 ml) milk, chicken stock, vegetable stock, or water
- 1 cup (60 g) instant potato chips
For 3 servings
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using the Stove
Step 1. Measure out the water, salt and butter and put them in a saucepan
Set a 1 liter pot on the stove and pour 1 cup (240 ml) of water into it. Add tsp. (1 g) salt and 1½ tbsp. (21 g) butter or margarine.
Step 2. Bring the water to a boil
Turn the stove over to medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. The butter should have melted and blended with the water.
Step 3. Turn off the stove and add the milk
If you don't want to use cup (120 ml) of milk, substitute it with chicken stock, vegetable stock, or water.
Step 4. Add instant potato chips and let sit for 30 seconds
Place 1 cup (60 g) of instant potatoes in a saucepan. Stir until smooth so the potatoes absorb the liquid. Let sit for 30 seconds until completely damp and fluffy.
Step 5. Stir in instant mashed potatoes and serve
Take a fork and gently stir or beat the potatoes. Divide the instant potatoes into three servings and serve immediately.
You can store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-5 days
Method 2 of 3: Using the Microwave
Step 1. Put water, salt, butter and milk in a bowl
Remove a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl and pour 1 cup (240 ml) of water and cup (120 ml) of milk into it. Add tsp. (1 g) salt and 1½ tbsp. (21 g) butter or margarine.
If you don't want to use milk, just replace it with chicken stock, vegetable stock, or water
Step 2. Add the potato chips
Pour 1 cup (60 g) of instant potato chips into a bowl and add liquid until absorbed. Cover the bowl.
If the bowl doesn't have a lid, cover it with a microwave-safe plate and fit over the mouth of the bowl
Step 3. Microwave the instant mashed potatoes for 2½ to 3 minutes
Put in a bowl and heat the potatoes on the highest setting for 2½ to 3 minutes.
Step 4. Stir and serve instant mashed potatoes
Use oven mitts to remove the hot bowl from the microwave. Open the lid and use a fork to stir the potatoes. Serve while warm.
Transfer the rest to an airtight container and place in the refrigerator. You should eat it within 3-5 days
Method 3 of 3: Trying Variations
Step 1. Add garlic powder
For a savory taste, add tsp.(1.5 g) of garlic powder to the water before heating. Don't use freshly sliced garlic, as it won't cook evenly and won't absorb into the potatoes like powdered garlic.
Step 2. Pour a little sour cream into the instant mashed potatoes
Once the potatoes are done cooking on the stove or in the microwave, add cup (230 g) of sour cream. The sour cream will give it a rich and creamy taste and texture.
You can also use plain yogurt or a few tablespoons of cream cheese
Step 3. Replace the water with a richer-tasting dairy product
Instead of using water, substitute half and half milk (a mixture of cream and milk in equal proportions) or evaporated milk. The milk will make the potato taste softer and the texture smoother because the fat content in it will help bind the instant potato chips together.
Step 4. Sprinkle instant mashed potatoes with cheese and spices
Sprinkle a handful of grated cheddar cheese, grated parmesan, or crumbled blue cheese. You can also add fresh scallions or chopped parsley to make the potato taste richer.
