When changing adult diapers, difficulties only arise if the wearer is lying on the bed. However, you can replace it as long as you know the correct technique. Don't forget, diapers should always be changed when they get dirty.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Removing Old Diapers
Step 1. Wash your hands
Hands should always be washed before starting so as not to infect the patient with germs. You should also wear latex gloves to protect your hands from body fluids.
Step 2. Prepare the necessary equipment
You will need a new diaper of the right size and wet wipes. You'll also need a container to hold old diapers as well as waterproof cream. This cream is used to protect the patient from getting wet after the diaper is changed.
Step 3. Remove the tape on the side of the diaper
Open both sides of the diaper. Tilt the patient's body gently toward your body. Fold on the opposite side of the patient as far as you can. Fold it down so that the diaper is easy to remove in a moment. Wipe the patient's front with a wet tissue.
Step 4. Tilt the patient's body
Tilt the patient's body against you. It is best to roll the patient over by placing the hand on the shoulder or hip. Tilt the patient until the side is completely, and almost prone.
Step 5. Wipe down everything that needs to be cleaned
Wipe everything before removing the diaper, especially if the patient has had a bowel movement. Try to clean as much dirt as possible before removing the diaper.
Step 6. Remove the diaper
Pull the diaper, then fold it so that the dirt does not spill out. Discard used diapers. You can wrap it in a plastic bag first before throwing it in the garbage bag so that the smell is not too strong.
Step 7. Clean thoroughly
Use wet wipes to clean the patient completely. Make sure the patient is cleaned thoroughly before proceeding. The patient is clean enough if there are no more traces of dirt on the tissue.
Step 8. Air the patient dry
If the patient is clean, let the air dry for a while. Do not put on a new diaper while the patient is still wet.
Part 2 of 2: Putting on a New Diaper
Step 1. Place the diaper under the patient
Open a new diaper. Place the diaper with the plastic side down. Push the diaper as far under the patient as possible, if possible.
Step 2. Apply cream or powder
Next, give cream or powder. Cream or powder will keep the patient's skin dry. Just give a thin layer, especially in the buttocks of the patient.
Step 3. Tilt the patient again
Gently pull the patient's body closer to yours again so that it hits the new diaper. Pull the diaper across his crotch.
Step 4. Attach the tape to the side of the diaper, usually velcro or tape
The diaper should fit snugly but not too tight for a comfortable feel. Leave at least a finger's worth of space under the adhesive layer.
You may need to tilt the patient slightly to the opposite side to reach the part of the diaper that is under the patient
Step 5. Make sure the patient's penis is facing downwards
Do not point the penis to the side, because the diaper will leak. The penis should be directed downwards, approaching the bottom of the diaper.
Step 6. Throw away your gloves
Pull the glove so that the inside is facing out. Throw away your gloves.
Step 7. Install the disposable mattress
If you wish, place a mat under the patient. Tilt the patient to spread out the mat, and return the patient so that he is lying on it. The mattress will keep the patient's bed clean in case the diaper leaks.
Tips
- If you are caring for a patient, always wear gloves when changing diapers to avoid touching the patient's body fluids and feces in the diaper.
- Disposable adult diapers (especially those similar to baby diapers) are available in a variety of sizes. Check the product packaging to see which size fits the patient best. If you don't find a commercial diaper size that fits you, you can look online for larger bariatric disposable diapers.
- Make sure the area around the patient's genitals is completely dry before putting on a new diaper.
