Vagisil is a commercial over-the-counter topical cream that can relieve vaginal itching in women. Vagisil is available in regular or maximum dosage options. Vagisil is actually easy to use. However, there are a few things you should pay attention to when using it.

Part 1 of 2: Using Vagisil
Step 1. Use as little as possible
Taking too much Vagisil can cause severe side effects. So, just use it sparingly. Instead, use Vagisil just a fingertip (about 2 cm).
Step 2. Only apply Vagisil on the outside of the vagina
Do not insert Vagisil into the vagina. Only use this medication on external parts of the body, such as the vaginal labia or vulva. Use your fingers to apply this cream to the outside of the vagina and relieve itching.
Do not apply Vagisil to large areas of the body. Applying Vagisil to large areas of the body can cause severe side effects. So, just apply it on the itchy area of the vagina. If the itchy area exceeds the area that can be smeared with a small amount of Vagisil, call your doctor or gynecologist
Step 3. Allow Vagisil to soak into the skin
This drug works by blocking the nerve signals that cause itching. That way, vaginal itching will subside for a while. However, keep in mind that this medication can take a few minutes to take effect. So, try to be patient.
Step 4. Use 3-4 times a day
You should not use Vagisil more than 4 times a day. If you still experience itching after using Vagisil, talk to your doctor or gynecologist about this. You may need prescription medication.

Step 1. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects
The active ingredient in Vagisil (benzocaine) can cause some serious side effects, but only when taken by mouth. However, seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Head dizzy
- Fast heart rate
- Hard to breathe
- Blue or pale lips, nails, or skin
Step 2. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction
Topical benzocaine can also cause allergic reactions in some people. Stop using Vagisil and call your doctor if you have any of the following signs:
- Soreness, pain, or severe sensitivity
- Swelling, redness, or warmth
- Discharge
- Blister
Step 3. Watch for common side effects
Some side effects are normal. So, do not panic if there are minor side effects accompanying the use of Vagisil. Some of the common side effects that occur while using Vagisil include:
- Mild pain or itching
- Mild redness or pain
- Dry and peeling skin on the area that is smeared with Vagisil
Step 4. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve
Vagisil should only be used for a short period of time. So, if your symptoms last for more than 7 days and do not improve, contact your doctor or gynecologist.
