A canvas backrest is a structure used by the artist to support and display the canvas being painted. This structure can also be used as part of an art exhibition. This guide is based on how to assemble and build a large 2 meter high three foot canvas backrest that can last for years.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Cutting the Backrest Parts
Step 1. Cut 15° from the two front legs measuring 2,065 mm (82 3/8")
Step 2. Measure 1,950 mm (78") from the bottom of the two front legs
Step 3. Drill a 10 mm (3/8") hole in the front (widest) side of the cut corner
Step 4. Cut the hind legs 2,025 mm (81") long
Step 5. Drill two 10 mm (3/8") holes in the front (widest)
One hole is 975mm (39") from the bottom and another 1,850mm (74") from the bottom.
Step 6. Cut a 1,200 mm (4ft) long horizontal section
Step 7. Cut an 18 mm (3/4") plywood base for the backrest measuring 1,200 mm (48") long and 825 mm (33") wide
Method 2 of 3: Assembling the Legs
Step 1. Place three feet on the floor with the back foot in the center position
Step 2. Align the holes at the top of the legs
Step 3. Thread the screws through the holes and loosen the nuts and bolts on the ends of the screws
Step 4. Spread the two front legs apart by 1,125 mm (45")
Tighten the bolts.
Method 3 of 3: Completing Assembly
Step 1. Complete the assembly
With the legs still on the floor, the top screwed in place, and the bottom 1125 mm (45") apart, place the horizontal section in the center, drill and secure to the front legs 950 mm (38") from the bottom of the forelegs.
Step 2. Glue and nail the plywood base to the front legs as shown in Fig.1
Make sure there is glue between the bottom end of the base and the horizontal section.
Step 3. Finish by setting up the canvas backrest and spreading out the legs of the backrest until the backrest reaches the desired height
Add straps to limit and prevent the legs from spreading. Thread the rope through the hole in the back leg and make a knot. Knot the end of the rope to the eye screw attached to the back of the horizontal wood.
