Are you looking for a way to create an unusual flower arrangement? Or do you just want to accent a handbag or create an entire bouquet of flowers? Designing flowers from hessian fabric can add interest and texture not only to an arrangement, you can also use these flowers for clothing, jewelry, or to make decorations.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Collect Supplies
Step 1. Make sure the style of the burlap matches the surroundings
You may want to consider placing burlap on a silk blouse, so tape the material to the burlap of your choice to make sure the two complement each other and don't collide.
Step 2. Look at the size of the flower
Sometimes bigger isn't always better, so make sure you measure your flowers correctly for your project.
Step 3. Use sharp sewing scissors, hot glue and circle felt (the same color as your burlap)
The felt will be used as a flower holder so make sure the circle size can hold the flower you are going to make.
Method 2 of 2: Make Flowers
Step 1. Cut the burlap into strips
For medium-sized flowers, you will need a burlap swatch measuring 3.5 cm x 35 cm (however this size will vary according to your project parameters).
-
Measure where you will cut. Make small cuts, then pull one strand out of the burlap on one side. Pulling a strand from the burlap will create a straight line for cutting.
-
Cut along the marking line using your sewing scissors to make a swatch.
Step 2. Fold the burlap strip in half at one end and start rolling it inward
This will create a centerpiece for your burlap flower.
Step 3. Continue rolling a few more times so you have about two or three middle layers
Step 4. Twist the burlap from the center and continue rolling to make the petals
Don't fold the swatch again once you've started working on the petals
Step 5. Hold the burlap flower at the base and continue twisting and looping, making it into petals and flowers
Step 6. Apply hot glue to the end of the burlap and twist it around the bottom of the flower
Hold it for a few minutes or until it dries so your flower doesn't unravel while you work the base.
Step 7. Glue the center at the bottom of the flower using hot glue and hold it in place
Add more glue along the sides and bottom to make sure the flowers look firm and ready.
Step 8. Done
Tips
- Deodorize the burlap by lightly spraying deodorizer or perfume.
- Iron the burlap before making the flower so that it becomes a drier rose. Set the iron to medium heat and/or lightly spray it before ironing.
- Wet the burlap slightly before cutting to avoid any dust or dirt remaining. Use a spray bottle filled with water to wet the burlap.
