Cutting your own bangs is risky. However, if you follow the right steps, you can get a layered bangs look without having to spend money to go to the salon. You just need a comb, a pair of special scissors for cutting hair, and courage!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Trimming and Layering Side Bangs
Step 1. Divide the hair according to the parting line on the head
Run your index finger down the center of the parting until your second knuckle is at the end of the leading hairline. The tip of your index finger will be where you separate and comb your bangs.
Make sure the hair is dry. Wet hair can stretch up to 45% longer so it will indeed be longer when wet. If you cut it while it's wet, it's likely that your hair will be longer than you'd like it to be
Step 2. Run the comb starting from where the tip of your index finger is
Draw a diagonal line from top to bottom. Make sure the line is straight.
Step 3. Pull the rest of the hair back and tie it in a ponytail
If your hair is shorter, just pin it back so it doesn't block your face. Make sure the only part you cut is hair that has been separated into bangs.
Step 4. Hold the bangs between your middle and index fingers
Use your non-dominant hand. Make sure the hair is flat and pulled tight.
Step 5. Cut the bangs at an angle that falls to the face you want
While you can choose any angle, cut it parallel to the parting line. Trim around the upper lip (for longer bangs) or at the tip of the nose (for shorter bangs). Cut with one or two even cuts.
Step 6. Don't cut it too short
Be careful when cutting it. Cut it slightly shorter, then gradually adjust to your desired length and angle while trimming the rest of the hair.
Step 7. Trim the bottom of the bangs vertically up for a layered look
Always keep the scissors open when cutting. Move horizontally along the bottom of the bangs, but trim vertically.
Method 2 of 3: Trimming and Creating Layered Straight Bangs
Step 1. Separate the hair that will be used as bangs
Make an inverted V shape about 3 cm from the hairline. The top of the triangle should be in the middle of the head. The benchmark that you can use to determine this is that the outermost row of bangs is usually parallel to the outer edge of the eyebrow. Bangs that are cut more than that will appear too wide.
Hair should also be completely dry when it is cut. Maybe you also want to cut it when your hair is looking "normal" like in everyday life. If your hair isn't as good as it used to be at the time of the cut, such as too curly or unruly, chances are you won't be happy with the results on normal days
Step 2. Comb the bangs forward
Tie the rest of the hair back in a ponytail. Make sure the part of the hair that is not tied is the one that will be cut into the bangs.
Step 3. Cut horizontally the length you want
This means that if you want your bangs to blend in with the rest of your hair, cut them long enough so that all of your bangs are the same length as the rest of your hair. If it's too long, you can shorten it later.
Step 4. Hold the bangs evenly in front of your face using a comb
Comb the bangs horizontally so that the bangs in front of the face are even. Decide how long the bangs will be. Remember, if it's too long, you can cut it later, but if it's too short, you can't do anything else.
Step 5. Hold the bangs between your middle and index fingers
Use your non-dominant hand. Make sure the hair is even and pulled tight.
Step 6. Start cutting from the middle
Hold the bangs between your thumb and index finger, then cut them vertically toward the fingers. Always keep the scissors open and cut slowly and lightly. Hair will become thinner and layered.
Step 7. Slide the scissors towards the side of the face and trim in the same way to make the bangs look layered
The position of the scissors should always be vertical, but cut in a horizontal direction. If you want your bangs to blend in with the rest of your hair, cut less hair as you approach your ears.
Method 3 of 3: Fixing Minor and Big Errors
Step 1. Don't cut more hair to fix the bangs that failed
If you make a mistake and cut your bangs too short, don't go on with another haircut to fix it. Just let it go and seek help, such as going to a professional salon, or clipping your bangs up.
Step 2. Comb your hair to the other side
If the bangs are cut too short, comb them to the opposite side. Cover the longer bangs on top of the shorter bangs so that the shorter bangs are not visible.
Step 3. Wear hair accessories that can hide the bangs
Use a scarf or headband so you can brush your bangs back with the rest of the hair. You can also use tongs to comb it to the side.
Step 4. Go to the salon
Go to the salon if your bangs are slanted or failing. They might still be able to save him one way or another. If your bangs are too short, talk to your stylist about hair extensions like bobby pins for example, to style them like natural bangs.
Tips
- Don't cut the bangs too short. If it's too long, you can always cut it again, but if it's too short, you can't lengthen it.
- Use special scissors to trim hair. Regular scissors won't produce the layered effect you want.
- Watch videos and read tutorials for the specific hairstyle you want before cutting it.
