You need to know how to measure jeans when buying new pants and building a wardrobe. Since not all jeans brands are the same size, knowing the size allows you to know the best jeans for your style and activity. If you have a favorite pair of jeans, use them to get your measurements; If you don't have a pair of jeans that fit you, choose the one you like best to determine the size. Once you've got your trouser size, you can easily buy jeans or other pants, and you'll always look great when you wear them!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Determining Jeans Size
Step 1. Spread the genie at work
For an accurate measurement, lay down and flatten the jeans on a flat surface. Wrinkles can make you measure your pants wrong.
Fasten the buttons and zipper of the jeans before starting
Step 2. Measure the waist of the jeans and multiply the number to get the waist circumference
Waist size is one of the most common sizes available in stores. Use a tape measure to measure the waist circumference of your jeans. Make sure that the waistband of the pants does not fall off or sag when measured.
- If the waist circumference is made of elastic material, do not stretch it when measured so that the measurement results are not too large.
- Note whether the jeans are labeled "high-waisted" or "low rise". If the jeans are made to rest other than the waist of the wearer, make sure you know this before buying.
Step 3. Measure the length of the hem of the pants
The hem of the pants extends from the crotch to the toe of the jeans; Don't start measuring from the waist. This size is often used by stores to help find pants sizes, especially for men's sizes. The hem size is often used to measure the length of the pants. Take note of this size.
Make sure the genie is completely flat when measured
Step 4. Measure the jeans from the crotch to the waist to determine the rise
This size is less common than waist or deep hem measurements, but you may need one.
Some pants can provide "front rise" and "back rise" size figures. Front rise is the size of the pants from the crotch to the waistline at the front, and the back rise is the measurement from the crotch to the waist at the back of the pants
Step 5. Measure the thigh 5 cm below the crotch hem to determine the thickness of the thigh
Measure the pant legs horizontally. Multiply this number to get the thigh size. This size is also not commonly used.
Step 6. Compare the measurements with the jeans size chart
For women's jeans, the waist measurement is most important, although the inner hem will help determine whether you need tall, regular, or petite/small jeans. Compare the measurement results with the size chart to find the most appropriate one. Men's jeans include measurements of waist circumference and inner hem length.
- Take a look at this chart to see the sizes of different brands:
- Most stores and shopping sites provide customers with product charts. So, you can use it if you are looking for a specific brand size.
- Keep in mind that for men's jeans, you will need to increase the size by a few centimeters because clothing manufacturers make them smaller, and this is known as vanity sizing.
Method 2 of 3: Self-Sizing to Find the Best Jin Size
Step 1. Use a fine measuring tape to measure the waist circumference
Make sure you use a soft tape measure as it should be able to bend around the waist. Rest the measuring tape directly on the skin 10 cm below the navel. Loop the tape measure back and front of the waist. This size is widely used in clothing stores.
- If the tape is not resting directly against the skin, your measurements will not be accurate.
- Record the measurement results in a book or paper.
- Your natural waist size is actually larger, which is slightly above your belly button. However, most jinn will lean under the navel.
Step 2. Check the size of your inner hem by measuring the length of the leg from the crotch down
Spread your feet shoulder-width apart, and measure the length from the soles of the feet to the crotch on the inside of your feet. This size is often listed, especially on men's jeans.
- For example, if you like jeans that are slightly longer, measure from the bottom of your foot.
- Try not to bend over when reading the measurement results. So, it's best to use a mirror or mark by holding the measuring tape with your finger.
- If you have trouble holding the tape measure, try using tape to hold one end of the tape measure at the ankle while you hold the other end at the groin.
Step 3. Get a hip measurement using a measuring tape
Some jinn will also include this size. Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the pelvis. Make sure the measuring tape is not lifted or loose at the back. This size is rarely used, but you can still use it to measure your jeans before trying on.
Step 4. Get your thigh size by measuring around your thigh
Wrap the measuring tape over the skin at the largest part of the thigh. You only need to measure one thigh. If one of your thighs is larger than the other, measure that thigh. This size is also not commonly used.
Try not to pull the tape measure too tight so that your measurements are accurate and you get comfortable jeans. The band should feel snug, but you can still slip a finger under it
Step 5. Measure the front rise from the groin to the navel
Use a measuring tape to measure from just the back of the groin, all the way through the hips, and all the way to the front of the waist. For women, this point usually ends around the navel; for men, usually 2-5 cm below the navel. It's a good idea to wear a belt for the front rise size so you know where the waist of the jeans will lean. This measure is used quite rarely, but sometimes stores use it to determine how high or low the jeans are on the body.
If you need to measure back rise, do the same thing, but in the opposite direction
Step 6. Use measurements and sizing charts to find the best jeans for you
For women, use the size of the waist circumference in the chart as a benchmark. You can also use the inner hem size. For men, use the length and waist measurements on the chart. Note that sizes can be slightly smaller or larger so we recommend using the original chart.
When shopping on the internet, use the size chart according to the brand you want to buy. If you need to see sizes for different clothing brands, check out this chart:
Method 3 of 3: Finding the Right Genie on the Body
Step 1. Consider your desired rise height to your waist measurement
Low rise jeans will lean 5-10 cm below your belly button. Mid-rise jeans will lean just below your navel, while high-rise jeans will lean close to your natural waist, i.e. at your belly button or slightly above.
If you want, measure the waist where you want the jeans to rest
Step 2. Measure the jeans in the store before you try them on
If you don't like trying on pants in the store, use a tape measure to check your jeans first. Match your measurements to find jeans that fit your body. If that doesn't work, choose a slightly larger genie.
You can also take a pair of jeans that fit perfectly to the store. Hold your pants together with your new pants to compare them and determine which one will fit you
Step 3. Try on the jeans before buying to see if they are the right size
Even if you have a jeans size, it's a good idea to try on new jeans. The number of pants to be tried will not be much so the process can be faster.
Each pair of jeans will also be slightly different, especially if your old pants have stretched a bit from wearing them a lot
Step 4. Study the size chart and description when buying online to find the best size
Most online stores have a size chart so you can check what each size means. Plus, most stores will also have size descriptions on their product pages, which can include waist and front-rise measurements so you can have a clearer understanding of what you're buying.
Always be aware of vanity sizing because the size of the pants in every store can be different. Don't worry too much about the "right" size. Focus on finding the right measurement. This applies to men's sizes as well, which in theory are also "measured" but can fall victim to various sizes in various stores
Step 5. Get to know a brand whose size fits you so you don't have to measure often
Some brands will always have a smaller or larger size so it's best if you choose the brand that's the best size for you. In addition, also identify brands that follow the original size, and those that don't.
- For example, one site ranks these brands on a scale, starting with the brand that is closest in size to the original, to the last brand that is much larger than the original: H&M, Calvin Klein, Alfani, Gap, Haggar, Dockers, Old Navy..
- If you're buying jeans online, read customer feedback and reviews to estimate the suitability of the pants, for example, larger or smaller sizes. You can also buy from retailers who offer a return policy for online purchases so you can exchange them if needed.
Step 6. Buy a pair of jeans that are slightly smaller if they are likely to stretch
Unless they shrink when washed, most jeans feel the tightest when first worn. Due to the pressure of wearing them frequently, most jeans will loosen over time, making them more comfortable to wear. If your jeans seem too tight when worn, the pants will feel more comfortable after wearing them for a long time.
Step 7. Consider sewing the pants so they are the right size for you
If you're not happy with the fit of the jeans in the store, order a pair of jeans that fits your body size. Look for a reputable tailor who is good at making jeans, which can sometimes be cheaper than buying jeans at a clothing store.
