You can bleach your own hair cheaply and funly, but platinum blonde is rare. If your hair is yellow, orange, or copper after bleaching, cover it with toner or color corrector. You can also neutralize the yellow with a purple shampoo or a little gentian violet. You can also lighten your hair naturally using lemon juice.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Toner
Step 1. Apply toner after lightening your hair
Dark hair often turns orange or yellow after lightening. The right toner will remove this copper tint and bring your hair closer to platinum or white blonde.
Step 2. Look for purple toner at a pharmacy or cosmetic store
Most pharmacies should stock toners, and you can even find them in the hair care products section of your supermarket. You can also find purple toner at cosmetic and beauty supply stores. Choose a purple or violet toner to get rid of the yellow. If your hair is orange, choose a blue toner.
Step 3. Mix with red gold corrector (optional)
If you already have red hair, buy a corrector from a salon or online. Mix this product with toner according to the instructions on the user manual label.
Green toner will remove red, and blue toner will remove orange. However, without a corrector, this toner will make your hair yellow instead of white
Step 4. Use the color wheel to help you choose the right toner color
If you're still unsure about choosing a toner color, take a look at the color wheel. To find the best color for your hair, look at the colors that are directly opposite on the color wheel; this is your complementary hair color. The color of the toner or correcter must match the complementary color of your hair.
Step 5. Mix the developer cream
Choose a developer with a volume of 30 or less. High volume developer will weaken the hair or even cause it to fall out.
Step 6. Apply the product according to the user manual label
Check the toner label to find out how long the product needs to be left in the hair. If left too long, hair color can turn purple. So make sure you don't leave it on for too long.
You can also make an appointment with a professional hair stylist to apply toner. The time is no more than half an hour. The cost of this service varies depending on the salon, but is usually around IDR 300,000
Step 7. Get a professional hair whitening treatment
If you have the money and time, you can get the best bleaching results by going to a salon. This is the best way to minimize the risk of hair breakage and achieve a copper-free platinum, white, and silver blonde look.
Method 2 of 4: Using Purple Shampoo
Step 1. Choose a purple shampoo for regular maintenance
Purple-correcting shampoo will counter the yellow and make your hair look bright and blonde. This product is not as strong as a toner as it is designed for regular use. Here are some examples of purple or violet shampoos:
- Tressa Watercolors Violet Washe Shampoo
- John Frieda Sheer Blonde Color Renew Tone-Correcting
- Clairol Shimmer Lights
- Pravana Pure Light Brightening Shampoo for Blonde, Silver, or Highlighted Hair
- Matrix Total Results Brass Off shampoo
- Paul Mitchell Platinum Blonde shampoo
- Joico Color Balance shampoo
- All shampoos with "D&C Violet" or "Extract Violet" in the ingredients list.
Step 2. Shampoo with purple shampoo
Follow the directions on the shampoo bottle. Apply purple shampoo instead of regular shampoo, then rinse and follow up with conditioner. For best results, most purple shampoos need to be left on for 3-5 minutes.
Step 3. Repeat every 2-3 shampoos
If you use purple shampoo too often, your hair can start to turn purple. Just use it once every 2-3 times shampooing or less often after the copper color is gone from the hair.
Method 3 of 4: Using Gentian Violet
Step 1. Purchase gentian violet at the pharmacy
Look for a small vial of this dark purple liquid in a small concentration (2%). In supermarkets, this product is usually placed on a shelf with a bandage and antiseptic.
Step 2. Mix two drops into a basin of cold water
Don't pour too much as your hair color may turn purple! The color of the water should now be violet, not dark purple.
Be careful. Any surface that is exposed to gentian violet will also be stained. It's a good idea to do this step outdoors instead of in the sink
Step 3. Dip all the hair into the basin
Leave the hair in the water for 30–60 seconds. This process will lighten the hair color and reduce the yellow or copper tint.
Step 4. Dry the hair
Keep in mind that your towels will stain purple.
Step 5. Repeat weekly
Repeat this process once a week so that your hair color lasts.
Method 4 of 4: Lightening Hair with Lemon
Step 1. Treat hair with lemon juice
Squeeze the lemon juice and apply it on the yellow areas of your hair. You can also rub it in with shampoo to lighten the effect.
Step 2. Dry the hair in the sun (optional)
The heat and sunlight will help the lemon juice lighten your hair.
Step 3. Use conditioner
If the lemon juice is left on for too long, your hair can be damaged by acid. Using a conditioner or alkaline product will help prevent this problem from occurring.
Tips
- You can also mix one drop of gentian violet with a bottle of conditioner or shampoo for maximum whitening of your hair. Do not pour more than 1 drop in a 500 ml bottle. Mix in a bowl and return to the bottle, making sure all the shampoo or conditioner is in one color. You can also add a drop of gentian violet directly to the bottle and shake it thoroughly to make sure it mixes well.
- You can paint your light brown hair light brown for a more natural blonde look.
- Leaving the bleach on longer can help prevent the yellow or copper tint that is left behind when the lighter picks up the darker pigment. Use a developer on a lower volume so you can leave the bleach on longer without damaging your hair. It is also recommended to use a low volume developer near the roots as body heat will speed up the lightening of the hair. Strand testing can help you figure out how to get the color you want.
