How to Bless a Home: 12 Steps (with Pictures)

You've finally moved into your new home, which is perfect in every way, and you want things to stay that way. If you are a religious or spiritual person, you may notice that blessing your home provides peace and tranquility. No matter what religion or spiritual belief you are, start with Step 1 below to find out how to do a home blessing that works for you.

Method 1 of 2: Religious Blessing

Step 1. Doing a Christian blessing

Blessing on Christian residences is an ancient tradition that can be found in Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and other churches. The blessing can be done by a priest or priest who has been ordained, or by the owner of the house himself.

If you would prefer your home to be blessed by an ordained pastor, invite him to your home for the blessing, and he will be happy to help.
In general, the priest would walk from room to room, sprinkling each room with holy water. As he walked, he would probably read a verse or two from the scriptures.
If you prefer to bless your own home, use holy oil (which can be made from cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, blessed by the priest) to put the sign of the cross on every window and door in the house.
As you sign the cross, say a simple prayer asking God to bless the room. For example, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask Your peace and happiness to fill this room,” or “May Your Holy Spirit flow and fill this house with Your spirit.”

Step 2. Perform a Jewish blessing

There is a lot of Jewish tradition that has to do with moving into a new home, or simply blessing an old one.

When moving to a new house, Jewish families were required to put a “mezuzah” (parchment inscribed with Hebrew words from the Torah) at every entrance and exit in the house.
When the “mezuzah” is installed, the following prayer is recited, “Thank you, our Lord, king of the universe, who has purified us by His command and ordered us to affix the mezuzah”.
It is also believed that Tuesday is the best day to move into a new house, and bread and salt should be the first items that enter the house, and immediately after moving, a “Chanukat Habayit” or new house welcome should be held, where friends and families gather and the words of the Torah are spoken.
During the new house celebration, the tradition is to eat the first fruit of the new season while chanting the “shehecheyanu” blessing, such as this: “Thank you, our Lord, the king of the universe, for giving us life, supporting us and allowing us to seize this opportunity.”

Step 3. Perform Hindu blessings

There are many kinds of Hindu house blessings according to different regions. In some places, the housewarming ceremony is the second most important day after the wedding day.

However, in all areas, the house blessing must be carried out in the morning on the day the homeowner moves into their new home. The auspicious date must be chosen by the local Hindu priest, who must also perform the ceremony.
On that day, it was customary (in some areas) for homeowners to provide gift containers or “dakshina” for the priest's use during the ceremony. Gift containers usually contain items such as washed rice, mango leaves, beef oil, coins, spices, herbs, fruit, flowers, and so on.
During the ceremony, the owners of the house usually sit in front of the fireplace, put on their best clothes and repeat the mantra. The priest will usually say prosperity prayers to the Hindu gods, asking for prosperity, purity and serenity to be bestowed on the people who live in the house.

Step 4. Perform Islamic blessings

Muslims generally bless their homes by saying prayers-usually no formal ceremony is required. However, certain prayers and traditions are recommended:

When moving to a new house, it is best to pray two rak'ahs, asking Allah to bestow "baraka" (blessings), "rahma" (mercy) and perform "dhikr" (remembrance of God) on the house.
You can also say a prayer to protect your home from the evil eye and the envy of others using the preventative plea: “I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from all demons, harm and the accusing eye.”
It is also recommended that you invite your friends and family for dinner, as feeding others is considered an act of generosity, and a way of showing gratitude to Allah. At a small dinner, you and your guests can recite verses from the Quran together.
Apart from blessing your home when you move, you can also bless your home every time you pass through the door using the following prayer: “I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from the evil that He created.” Repeating this sentence three times will ensure no harm comes to you while you are in the house.

Step 5. Performing a Buddhist blessing

In Buddhism, a ceremony known as “Khuan Ban Mai” is performed (in certain areas) when a new house is built to protect the house and its inhabitants. The ceremony is performed by a group of nine monks, who must be invited to the house on the morning of the ceremony.

The monks then performed a ritual involving holy water and candles. When the wax melts and falls into the water, it is believed to drive away evil and sorrow.
The monks also recite prayers in Pali, while passing a white thread through each of their hands. The vibrations from the said prayer are believed to flow through the thread, protecting the house and its inhabitants.
After the ceremony, the monks sit down to eat the food prepared by the homeowner's family, friends and neighbors. They must finish their food before noon. Then one monk sprinkled holy water on every room in the house, before they all left.
After the monks left, the other guests sat down to eat the remaining food. In the afternoon, they perform a thread ceremony, in which guests wind a thread around the owner of the house and give their blessing.

Method 2 of 2: Spiritual Blessing

Step 1. Clean and tidy your house

It is very important to clean and tidy up your house before you do the house blessing. This will put you in a more positive mind and invite fresh energy into the house.

Step 2. Invite friends and family

Inviting friends and family to share in the house-blessing ritual with you is a good idea. Ask them to stand in a circle and hold hands.

Step 3. Light the pink candle

Pink symbolizes love and kindness, and will invite that energy into your home.

Step 4. Share the blessing

Give a pink candle to everyone in the circle. Whoever holds the candle must share their blessings for the house and the owner of the house. Examples of blessings include “may this house be a sacred abode for you and your family” or “may those who enter this house feel peace and love”.

Step 5. Walk into each room in the house and set your goals for that room

After the blessing, you may want to bring a pink candle into each room of your home and state your purpose for the room, whether it be the bedroom, nursery or kitchen.
