Rectal suppositories are used for a variety of medical purposes, such as inserting special medications, as laxatives, as well as the treatment of hemorrhoids. If you have never used rectal suppositories before, the process of administering this medication may seem quite daunting to you. But with proper preparation, this process can be done easily and quickly.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Preparing Suppositories
Step 1. Consult a doctor
Although suppositories can be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription, it's a good idea to consult your doctor before using a medication you've never used.
- This is especially important if you have been constipated for a long time and have tried self-medicating at home using suppositories. You should not use laxatives for a long time.
- In addition, consult a doctor before you use suppositories: if you are pregnant, nursing, taking other medicines, or if used for children.
- Don't forget to tell your doctor if you have severe abdominal pain, have pain, or have ever had an allergic reaction to laxatives.
Step 2. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
Germs and other bacteria are able to attack the immune system through the rectum if the opportunity arises. Therefore, it is recommended that you wash your hands, even if you will be wearing gloves during the procedure.
If you have long nails, you will need to trim them to prevent them from scratching or injuring the anal lining
Step 3. Read the instructions on the package
A number of laxative products have different ways of using or using different dosages. The effectiveness of a laxative determines how many suppositories you need to use.
- Follow the directions on the package and never exceed the recommended dose.
- If you are using a laxative prescribed by a doctor, follow the instructions given by the doctor.
- If you don't need to take the full dose, cut the suppository in half lengthwise. The longitudinal section makes it easier for you to insert it into the rectum than the cross section.
Step 4. Put on disposable rubber gloves or finger guards
If you prefer, you can use rubber gloves to protect your hands during the suppository administration process. Gloves aren't really necessary but you may find it more comfortable to insert the suppository with your gloved hand, especially if you have long nails.
Step 5. Make the suppository a bit firm if it feels soft
If the suppository is too soft, it will be painful to insert. Therefore, it is recommended that you harden it first before inserting it. There are several ways to harden it, before opening the package:
- Place in the refrigerator or freezer for up to 30 minutes.
- Run with cold water for a few minutes.
Step 6. Lubricate the area around the anus with petroleum jelly (optional)
To make it easier for you to insert the medicine, you may need to lubricate the skin around the anus. Use petroleum jelly, cream, or lotion recommended by your doctor.
Method 2 of 3: Inserting Your Own Suppositories
Step 1. Lie on your side
One way to insert a suppository is to do it lying down. Lie on your left side and lift your right leg toward your chest.
- You can also insert the suppository in a standing position. Spread your feet shoulder width apart then squat down a bit.
- Another way is to lie on your back with your legs raised slightly (similar to a baby changing diapers).
Step 2. Insert the suppository into the rectum
To make it easier, raise the right buttocks (above) so that the anus is visible. Insert the suppository lengthwise for easier insertion. Push inward using the index finger for adults or using the little finger for younger children.
- For adults, try to push the suppository a minimum of 2.5 cm into the rectum.
- For children, try to push the suppository a minimum of 1.2-2.5 cm into the rectum.
- Also, make sure you put the medication through the sphincter. If the inserted suppository does not pass through the sphincter, the drug will eventually come out, not be absorbed by the body.
Step 3. Squeeze the buttocks tightly for a few seconds after the suppository is inserted
This will help prevent the suppository from slipping out.
You may need to remain in a lying position for a few minutes after the suppository is inserted
Step 4. Wait for the drug to take effect
Depending on the type of suppository used, this medication usually takes 15 to 60 minutes to take effect and result in bowel movements.
Step 5. Remove gloves and wash your hands thoroughly
Use warm water and soap, making sure you rub the soap on your hands for at least 30 seconds and then rinse thoroughly.
Method 3 of 3: Helping Others Insert Suppositories
Step 1. Have the person lie on their side
There are several positions that can be used, one of the easiest is to lie on one side while bringing your knees to your chest.
Step 2. Get ready to insert the suppository
Hold the suppository with one hand, between the thumb and forefinger. Use the other hand to lift or open the buttocks opening so that the anal canal is visible.
Step 3. Insert the suppository
Use your index finger if you are helping an adult, or your ring finger if you are helping a child to insert the round end of the suppository into the rectum.
- For adults, try to push the suppository at least 2 cm into the rectum.
- For children, try to push the suppository at least 1-2 cm into the rectum.
- If the suppository does not go deep enough (to pass the sphincter), it will be pushed out of the rectum.
Step 4. Tighten the buttocks for about 10 minutes
To make sure the suppository doesn't come out again, gently press both sides of the buttocks tightly together. Body heat will eventually make the suppository melt so it can work.
Step 5. Remove gloves and wash hands thoroughly
Use warm or hot water and soap. Be sure to wipe your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds then rinse.
Tips
- You should enter this medicine as soon as possible. Holding the suppository for too long will cause it to melt in your hand.
- If the suppository slips out of the rectum, this means you inserted it not too far from the rectum.
- Make sure the child does not move as you insert the suppository.
- You can also insert the suppository while standing. To do this, stand with your legs spread apart and in a slightly squat position. Insert the suppository into the rectum by pushing it in with your finger.
Warning
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before and after the procedure. Stool contains bacteria that can cause disease
