This wikiHow teaches you how to turn a text message into an iMessage on an iPad or iPhone. iMessages can only be sent to other iPhone users.
Step
Step 1. Make sure you and the recipient of the message are connected to the internet
iMessages are sent over the internet so both must be connected to a data plan or Wi-Fi.
- Android users cannot send and receive iMessages.
- SMS/MMS messages are shown in green, while iMessages messages are blue.
Step 2. Open Settings
on iPhone.
This app is usually located on the home screen.
Step 3. Touch Messages
The icon is green with a white conversation bubble in the middle.
Step 4. Slide the “iMessage” switch to the On position
You don't need to slide it if the button is already green.
Step 5. Slide the "Send as SMS" button to the Off position
Remember, if you want to send a message to someone using an Android or any other phone other than an iPhone, you won't be able to send text messages if this button is disabled.
Step 6. Scroll down the screen and tap Send & Receive
This will display some contact information.
Step 7. Select your email address and mobile number
These two options are displayed under the “YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT” heading. If there are no check marks to the left of either option, touch each one to bring it up.
Step 8. Return to the home screen by pressing the Home button
Step 9. Open Messages
The icon is green with a white conversation bubble in the middle. This app is usually located on the home screen.
Step 10. Send the message
From now on, all messages sent will be in the form of iMessages, not SMS/MMS.
