Ancano is one of the strongest mages living in the College of Winterhold. In the main mission of the College of Winterhold, Ancano will be the last enemy you have to fight in the "Eye of Magnus" quest. In this quest, Ancano has taken control of the entire College of Winterhold and plans to use the power of the Eye of Magnus (an ancient artifact) to carry out his evil plans against the world of Skyrim. Fighting Ancano is very challenging because he looks immune to all kinds of attacks. Therefore, you need the Staff of Magnus to defeat him.

Method 1 of 2: Finding the Staff of Magnus
Step 1. Go to the Labyrinthian
After arriving at Morthal, walk south and then east. Keep following the path until you come to a fork. Follow the small path that leads to the south. Follow this path until you see the entrance to the Labyrinthian, an uninhabited city surrounded by ruins.
Step 2. Kill the Morokei
Explore the Labyrinthian until you reach a place called the Labyrinthian Tribune. This place is on the third floor. Inside that place you will meet a Dragon Priest named Morokei. He has a weapon called the Staff of Magnus. Kill him to get this weapon.
Long-range weapons, such as bows and spells, are very effective against Morokei. Melee attacks, such as using a sword or axe, can injure him, but are not as effective as ranged weapons. Also, avoid the Chain Lightning magic he uses because it can significantly reduce your Health (the number of lives a character has)
Step 3. Get the Staff of Magnus
After defeating him, approach and examine the Morokei's ashes for the Staff of Magnus as well as the mask.
Step 4. Return to Winterhold
After killing the Morokei, you'll find a door inside the Labyrinthian Tribune that leads you outside. Exit the Labyrinthian through the door and return to Winterhold by walking northeast.
Method 2 of 2: Fighting Ancano
Step 1. Enter the College of Winterhold
Once you arrive at Winterhold, a strong wind will blow over the grounds of the College of Winterhold. This makes it difficult for you to move. Wear and use the Staff of Magnus by pressing the "Attack" button on the controller to dispel the strong wind that blows. After that, you can enter the College of Winterhold.
Step 2. Find Ancano
Enter the largest tower called “The Hall of Elements.” Inside this tower you will see Ancano directing his magic at a floating round object called the Eye of Magnus.
When entering The Hall of Elements, Tolfdir (a non-playable character or a character controlled by the game) will enter this room and talk to Ancano. Wait for them to finish talking. After that, Ancano will knock out Tolfdir before attacking you
Step 3. Close the Eye of Magnus
After Tolfdir faints, use the Staff of Magnus to attack the Eye of Magnus. The Eye of Magnus slowly closed and the magic power produced by this thing began to decrease. Keep aiming the Staff of Magnus at the Eye of Magnus until it is fully closed.
Do not attack Ancano if the Eye of Magnus is not fully closed. He cannot be harmed by any attack as long as the Eye of Magnus is open
Step 4. Kill Ancano
Once the Eye of Magnus is closed, approach and attack Ancano with any weapon or magic until he dies.
- Ancano will sometimes try to re-open the Eye of Magnus. As a result, he will again be immune from any attack. If this happens, repeat Step 3 until the Eye of Magnus is closed and Ancano can be injured again.
- Any type of fire magic you've learned early in the game can effectively injure Ancano.
- After Ancano dies, talk to the awakened Tolfdir to continue the quest.
