In the past, many of us had friendship bracelets, during camping events or during art lessons at school. But that doesn't make bracelets old school stuff; Making your own string bracelet is an easy way to have fun while adding a splash of color to your (or your friends') look! Try one of these methods to make your first bracelet from strands of string.

Step

Method 1 of 4: Making a Spiral Bracelet

Step 1. Select the rope

You will need lots of rope in any color. Spiral bracelets are simple bracelets and don't require complicated braid shapes. Cut the strap to fit on your wrist. Attach a bunch of strings with tape to the table.

Step 2. Twist the strands of rope

Hold the ends of all the ropes and twist them until the colors are well arranged. Hold and hold the rope firmly so it doesn't tangle.

Step 3. Finish the spiral

While carefully holding the end of the rope, remove the tape from the other end. The rope will automatically twist itself.

Step 4. Finish the bracelet

Pull the end of the strap (the loose, untwisted one) toward the opposite end and adjust to your wrist.

Step 5. Put on your new bracelet

Tie the bracelet around your wrist.

Method 2 of 4: Making a Striped Bracelet

Step 1. Choose your rope

Choose four embroidery floss of different colors. Leave in its original twist, 6 strands per rope, and cut each rope to a length of 60 centimeters.

Step 2. Start making the bracelet

Tie the ropes into a small knot at the very end. Then, twist the ropes about 7.5 cm and tie them again to make a second knot. You've just created one side that will loop around your wrist. Tape this knot on the table or on your thigh.

Step 3. Start your pattern

Line up the rope horizontally, giving space between the strands. Start on the left and tie a knot along each rope by making an "L" shape of the first rope just above the other rope. That way it will be formed like the number "4". Grab the ends of these two ropes and cross them, pulling the ends towards the middle. This will create a loop around the second rope, which you must pull all the way up. Repeat this step to complete the knot.

Step 4. Continue your pattern

Using the same rope as starting, work the right side by tying a knot around the adjacent rope. When you're on the right (after knotting all the ropes), untie the rope and start from the left again by tying the knot. Continue the same pattern you started, this time using the second string, working all the way to the right again. Eventually you'll work all four of these strings, and start the same pattern again on the first string again. Make sure to keep pulling the top of the string taut, so your end result is pretty, smooth, and even.

Step 5. Finish your bracelet

Stop patterning when the twisted strap is enough to fit your wrist. Tie a knot at the end, and braid the rope. Tie another knot at the end of the braid to make a second knot in your bracelet.

Step 6. Put on your bracelet

Tie a bracelet around your wrist and show it to people.

Method 3 of 4: Making a Polka-Dot Bracelet

Step 1. Choose your color

For this pattern, you will need one color as the centerpiece of the bracelet and an additional color for the polka-dots. The center will be created using the “striped bracelet” method and the polka-dots will be attached afterwards.

Step 2. Start making the bracelet

Cut the rope into four strands, each 60 cm long. Tie a knot at the end, and make a 5-7.5 cm long braid. Make another second knot at the end of the braid, and tape it to the table or your thigh.

Step 3. Start your pattern

Lay the rope horizontally, leaving some distance between the strands. Repeat this step to complete the knot. br>

Step 4. Continue your pattern

The rope you first started with is now on the right. Take the second rope and repeat the same pattern as above. Make a “4” shape with two strings, pulling the ends to the center of the bracelet. Do this with the second string until there is nothing left. Continue the pattern by twisting the rope from left to right by tying a knot.

  • Keep this pattern until the bracelet is long enough to wrap around your wrist. Then, tie a knot and braid 5 - 7.5 cm long before tying the extra knot and cutting off the excess string.

Step 5. Add polka-dots

To add polka-dots to the bracelet, you will use French knot embroidery. Hook the needle on the string in the color you chose to make a polka-dot. Tie a knot, stab and pull at the very first knot of the bracelet.

  • Pull the string, then bring the needle back to the center of the bracelet. Wind the needle on the string (to tighten it) so that the string spirals around the needle 3 times.

  • Place the needle at a point on your bracelet very close to your starting string, but don't pull on it. Then, pull the spiral string tightly under the needle and clamp it while pulling the needle all the way through. Finish the knot by tying it at the bottom of the bracelet. Add as many polka-dot knots as you want

Method 4 of 4: Making a Chevron Bracelet

Step 1. Choose your rope

Choose four embroidery floss of different colors and cut each color into two 60 cm long strands per strand (so there are two strands per color). Tie them into a knot at the end and braid it 5-7.5 cm, then tie the knot again. Then tape the beginning of the bracelet to the table or your thigh.

Step 2. Start the pattern

Spread these strings in a position of two the same color lined up opposite as in a mirror. Then, take the rope on the far left and fold it in half over the rope on the right. The two strings will form the number “4”; grab the first end of the rope and bring it through the middle of the “4” and pull the string up, creating a knot. Do it again with the same string, so you make two knots in a row.

Step 3. Finish the left section

Continue the two knots above in a “4” shape method all the way to the left until the very first string is in the middle of the other string.

Image
Image

Step 4. Start right

Take the rope on the far right; it should be the same color as the string you just made in the middle. Make a reverse "4" and tie a double knot until the string also reaches the middle of the row, right next to the pair. Then, tie the two ropes in the middle with two knots.

Step 5. Continue the pattern

Work from left to center and then from right to center with the same process as described above. When a pair of the same colored strings meet in the middle, tie a double knot (otherwise you'll end up with two bracelets of stripes).

Step 6. Finish the bracelet

When you've added the required length to wrap the chevron bracelet around your wrist, tie the remaining strings in a knot. Then, add 5 – 7.5 centimeters of braid at the end to make a secure end for the bracelet. Cut off any tangled ends, and flaunt a brand new chevron bracelet wrapped around your arm or give it to a friend as a gift!

Step 7. Done

Tips

  • The more colors of string you use, the better your bracelet will be.
  • Good thing the more permanent ends on your bracelet, add a pin in the tail rather than in the braid.
  • Using a few twists to get started is the best way to go, and you can work your way up slowly combining the straps and colors on your bracelet.
