Coquito is a famous coconut cream drink from Puerto Rico that is usually enjoyed at Christmas. Some even call it “Puerto Rican eggnog,” even though this traditional drink recipe does not include eggs. However, it is true that this drink has a rich, creamy taste, with a cinnamon delicacy that makes people think of a holiday. In fact, many people think that “Coquito” is better than eggnog! If you want to know how to make “Coquito”, check out Step One to get started.
Ingredients
- 1 can (355 ml) evaporated milk
- 1 can (415 ml) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can coconut milk or coconut cream
- 1 cup (240 ml) white rum
- 1/2 tablespoon (4 grams) cinnamon
- 1/2 tablespoon (7 ml) vanilla extract
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise
Step
Step 1. Prepare your ingredients, Make sure everything is ready:
one can of evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and coconut milk, white rum, cinnamon, vanilla extract, 2 cinnamon sticks and 1 split vanilla bean. This vanilla bean is not mandatory, but it can add a delicious taste to the drink. You can also use regular rum instead of white rum. If you want a milder taste, you can use coconut cream instead of coconut milk.
If you want to make this drink alcohol-free, replace the rum with a glass of cold or iced coconut water
Step 2. Mix all the main ingredients in a blender
Start by pouring the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and coconut milk into a blender. Beat for about a minute, then add the rum, cinnamon, and vanilla. If your blender isn't big enough, you can beat it in several batches.
Step 3. Pour the ingredients into a large drink holder/pitcher and refrigerate for two hours or so
Pour into a regular pitcher or even a few glass bottles. Whatever you use, make sure the holder has a lid and is fully closed. You can also still use a blender bottle. Coquito is best served cold! Many people even put it in the refrigerator overnight, but putting it in for more than 2 hours will already make it cold.
Add the cinnamon sticks and crushed vanilla bean to the mixture before you refrigerate it
Step 4. Shake well before serving
This action will help blend the ingredients.
Step 5. Serve
Pour this drink in a small glass and serve with powder and cinnamon sticks for garnish. You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week, but if you make Coquito right, there usually won't be any left! This recipe is to be served in 5 bottles of 237 ml each.
If you like this drink but want to make it less strong (no alcohol), you can replace the rum with ice, coconut milk, or even regular milk
Tips
- Decorate the bottle and give this drink as a gift and have fun!
- This recipe holds up to 1½ cups (360 ml) of white rum. Some recipes may even add cup (120 ml) of brandy. Too much rum will spoil the sweetness of this drink. As noted here, this recipe will make you popular and you will never miss this drink again at Christmas parties.:)
- Cinnamon and vanilla can be added to taste. Try this recipe to find a flavor that suits your taste.
- Some recipes will add 3 egg yolks. This recipe does not use eggs to avoid salmonella bacterial infection. Consider this carefully, especially if you don't drink it right away.
