Making Christmas decorations out of flour is quite easy and fun by following these steps. This craft idea is also suitable for children. Make Christmas decorations out of flour either by baking in the microwave or in the oven according to the method in this article!
Ingredients
- Oil (enough to coat your hands)
- 4 cups flour
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 cup salt
- Food coloring
To make a dozen cookies
Step
Part 1 of 4: Mixing the Dough
Step 1. Coat your hands with cooking oil
This way, the dough won't stick as easily as you knead.
Step 2. Mix all-purpose flour, water and salt
Stir by hand for best results. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes.
Step 3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface
Roll out the dough until it is about 1 cm thick. Dough that is too thick takes too long to dry so it may still be dough even after baking. While a dough that is too thin will result in a decoration that is too easily broken.
Step 4. Form the dough using a cookie cutter
Deer, dwarves, stars, snow crystals, Christmas trees, birds, or angels are all suitable shapes for Christmas decorations.
-
Or, let the kids make their own decorative shapes. This embellishment may not look as neat as if it were printed, but it will be so unique and one-of-a-kind!
Step 5. Make a hole with a large needle in the top of each ornament to hang it
Make a hole 0.5 cm from the top edge of the decoration.
Step 6. Transfer the cookie dough to a baking sheet or plate, depending on your cooking method
Part 2 of 4: Baking in the Oven
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees C before making the dough
Step 2. Once the oven is ready to use and the dough is molded, bake for 30 minutes
Allow the garnish to cool afterwards.
Step 3. Apply a layer of plastic or parchment paper on a table or other flat surface
This is to prevent spillage of stains when you color the decorations.
Step 4. Color the decoration with poster paint or oil paint
Decorate to look beautiful. Once dry, spray polyurethane on both sides of the trim to maintain the color.
This garnish should not and is not safe to eat. Don't try to eat it
Step 5. Once dry, thread the thread through the hole at the top of the trim
Alternatively, use a ribbon or string to hang it.
Part 3 of 4: Microwave Baking
Step 1. Cover with plastic or parchment paper on a table or other flat surface
This is to prevent spillage of stains when you color the decorations.
Step 2. Mix 1/4 bottle of food coloring with one cup of water for coloring
Or, use oil paint or poster paint. Green, red, silver, gold, and dark blue are the traditional colors of Christmas celebrations.
Step 3. Color with a food brush or painting brush
To create a thinner texture, use earplugs. Decorate to look beautiful.
Step 4. Put the 4 garnishes in the microwave
Bake for about 2 minutes on high.
Step 5. Check the consistency of the dough
Now the dough should feel like a damp sponge. If it dries, remove it from the microwave and allow it to cool.
Step 6. Bake in microwave 1 more minute
Remove the garnish from the microwave and allow it to cool.
Step 7. Spray some long-lasting hairspray, apply a light coat of Flecto Varathane (acrylic paint), or decoupage onto the decorative surface
That way your decoration will look more beautiful and shiny.
Notes: Do not bake the garnish in the microwave after spraying with hairspray and/or acrylic paint. This material is flammable and will cause a fire in the microwave resulting in a fire.
Step 8. Let the garnish dry overnight
Part 4 of 4: Decorating Ideas
Step 1. Insert the silver-colored beads into the cookies while they are still damp
That way, your decorations will appear to twinkle reflecting light.
-
You can also sprinkle some beads and press them into the dough.
Step 2. Yarn can be used to form a smiley face
Wet the yarn slightly before pressing it into the decoration. This will help shape them while preventing them from browning when baked in the microwave or oven.
Step 3. Use a small amount of dough as an additional garnish
Set aside a small amount of dough and color it in a different color. Shape into eyes, mouth, shoes, buttons, etc. Paint this additional decoration a different color to make it stand out.
Step 4. Punch the dough with a needle to create different textures
Make a checkered pattern, circular, or up and down lines.
Step 5. Done
Tips
- If you color the decorations before drying them, the difference in color will be more pronounced, especially with decorations that have 2 or more colors.
- Use nonstick cooking spray (such as PAM) to prevent the dough from sticking.
- Children love to play with dough, mold cookies, and color decorations, while toddlers love rolling out dough because it allows them to play around.
- You need to remember, that hairspray, Flecto Varathane and/or decoupage may not make your decoration last long, but will make it more beautiful. Also, don't microwave the dough after spraying it with hairspray, Flecto Varathane and/or decoupage. This chemical is flammable.
- Channel your creativity. Make whatever you or your child can.
Warning
- Don't eat this garnish!
- Do not put metal objects in the microwave.
- Call your doctor right away if you accidentally ingest decorations that contain dyes other than food coloring. If there are no toxic ingredients in it, be sure to give the children plenty of fluids to deal with the high salt content in the dough.
- Do not place the dough on newsprint, as this will absorb the ink.
- Adult supervision is required when placing the garnish in the microwave.
- This dough is inedible because it contains a high concentration of salt (although small amounts are harmless. The taste alone will discourage you from eating it again), especially if it has been sprayed with hairspray or other toxic substances.
