Step
Method 1 of 2: Roast Sweet Potatoes Whole
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 204 °C on your regular baking setting
Turn on the oven and set it to the desired temperature. Many ovens can tell you when the preheating process is complete. However, if your oven doesn't have this feature, preheat the oven for about 15 minutes.
Step 2. Rub and wash the sweet potatoes
Wash each sweet potato under cold running water. Scrub any dirt that sticks.
Leave the sweet potato skins on because you won't have to peel them while cooking
Step 3. Prick the sweet potato with a fork several times
Insert a fork into the sweet potato flesh. Make several long incisions on each sweet potato.
This is useful so that the sweet potatoes can be cooked evenly
Step 4. Place the sweet potato on the lined oven tin
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, a non-stick baking mat, or aluminum foil. Spread the sweet potatoes on the baking sheet without touching each other.
This is to ensure that all sides of the sweet potato are perfectly cooked
Step 5. Bake the sweet potato for about 45 minutes
Set the oven timer for the required time. Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven when they are soft. Check for softness with a fork.
Check the sweet potatoes regularly when they are almost done so that you can take them out of the oven at the right time
Step 6. Add butter, pepper and salt to the sweet potatoes
Make a long slice across the top of the sweet potato using a sharp knife. Add 1 tbsp. (15 grams) unsalted butter in each sweet potato. Next, season the sweet potatoes with pepper and salt to taste.
- Topping sweet potatoes, for example, by giving grated cheddar cheese, feta cheese crumbs, freshly chopped basil, sliced red onions, chili, corn, taco meat, or ham pieces.
- Whole, ripe sweet potatoes can be stored by wrapping each sweet potato in aluminum foil, and placing it in a freezer bag or airtight container.
Method 2 of 2: Baking Sweet Potato Slices
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 204 °C
Turn on the oven and set the temperature. The oven will notify you when the preheating process is complete.
If the oven does not have an indicator indicating the heating time is complete, preheat the oven for about 15 minutes
Step 2. Wash and rub the sweet potato
Place the sweet potato under running water. Clean the dirt on the sweet potato skin using a scrub brush.
- Dry the sweet potatoes by patting them with a paper towel or kitchen towel after you wash them.
- Sweet potatoes don't need to be peeled because you can cook and enjoy them with their skins on.
Step 3. Cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise
Place the sweet potato on a sturdy cutting board, then cut the sweet potato in half using a sharp knife.
Sharpen your kitchen knives regularly so you can use them safely
Step 4. Slice each piece of sweet potato into 4 lengthwise pieces
Place the sweet potato strips with the flat side against the cutting board. Slice each piece carefully into 4 more pieces.
Don't worry if the slices are not the same size. You can estimate the size, and the sweet potatoes will still cook evenly
Step 5. Cut each slice into squares about 1.5 centimeters long
Use a sharp knife to cut each slice into squares. The number of squares produced from each slice depends on the size of the sweet potato.
Don't worry if the boxes are not the same size. Even if they are not exactly the same size, all the sweet potato squares can still cook evenly
Step 6. Spread the sweet potato pieces on the lined oven pan
Place parchment paper in the appropriate size for the oven tray. Spread the sweet potato pieces evenly on the baking sheet. Make sure the sweet potatoes don't pile on top of each other.
If you don't have parchment paper, you can also use aluminum foil or a nonstick baking sheet
Step 7. Coat the sweet potatoes with oil, salt, garlic powder and black pepper
Sprinkle about 2 tsp. (10 ml) avocado oil or grapeseed oil on sweet potato slices. After that sprinkle 1 tsp. (3 grams) garlic powder, 1 tsp. (6 grams) salt, and 1 tsp. (3 grams) black pepper on sweet potato chunks.
- After adding the oil and seasoning, toss the sweet potato pieces on the baking sheet with a spoon or fork so that the oil and seasonings are evenly distributed.
- Grapeseed oil or avocado oil are best options because they can withstand the high heat used for roasting sweet potatoes.
Step 8. Bake the sweet potatoes at 204 °C for 25 to 30 minutes
About 15 minutes later, flip the sweet potato pieces so that each side cooks evenly. If they are crunchy, the sweet potato is cooked through and can be removed from the oven.
- Serve sweet potatoes with dipping sauces, such as salsa, barbecue sauce, pesto sauce, or ranch sauce so you can try a variety of flavors.
- Leftover baked sweet potato chunks can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to a year.
