Quizlet is a free service that allows you to create, edit, and share your own cards online to study various topics. You can create your own set of learning media cards to test yourself on a variety of topics, or choose one from the millions of card sets created by other members. This wikiHow teaches you how to create your first set of learning media cards on the Quizlet website, as well as the official Quizlet app on Android, iPhone, and iPad.

Method 1 of 2: Using a Phone or Tablet
Step 1. Open the Quizlet app on your phone or tablet
This app is marked by a blue icon with a white “Q” inside. You can find it on your home screen or app drawer, or by searching for it. If you don't have Quizlet installed, you can download it for free from the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android).
- If you need to import a definition list from a digital file (e.g. a Google Doc document or spreadsheet), refer to methods for creating a card set using a computer.
- Sign in to your Quizlet account if you haven't already. If you're new to Quizlet, follow the on-screen instructions to create an account at this point.
Step 2. Touch Create
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
If you subscribe to the paid Quizlet Plus service, you can create sets by scanning a pre-printed definition list using your phone or tablet camera. To scan a printed document, touch “ Scan documents ” under the " Title " column, then follow the on-screen instructions to scan.
Step 3. Enter the set title
You can use the name of the subject, chapter, unit, or other word that describes the definitions in the set. If you are using an iPhone or iPad, you can also add a description of the set by tapping “ +Description ”.
Step 4. Type in the first term and definition
Scroll to the first blank "TERM" field and touch the field to type text. You can choose another color and font size if you want when prompted.
- If you are creating a notecard/learning media for a foreign language, touch “ CHOOSE LANGUAGE ” under each term and definition to make sure you choose the right language. If you plan to add all the terms in one language, while the definitions are added in another, tap the gear icon in the upper-left corner of the Quizlet window, then adjust the language settings for the terms ("Terms") and definitions ("Definitions") segments at the top. screen.
- You may see a list of options below the column, depending on what you typed into the column. Sometimes, Quizlet can guess the correct definition of the term you entered, and you can select it from the list of options that appears.
- You'll need a paid Quizlet Plus subscription if you want to upload images to your card. However, if you're using a computer to make cards, you can choose a free image from the Quizlet library.
Step 5. Touch the + button
Cards will be added to the new set.
Step 6. Create additional cards as needed
After entering the information on each card, touch the “ + ” to add it to the card.
Step 7. Set who can view and edit your learning media card set
By default, anyone can see your card set, but only you can edit it. If you want to change this setting, tap the gear icon in the upper left corner of the screen to open the “Options” page, then tap the options under “Visible to “and “Editable by “to make changes.
Touch the back button to access the card set page again when finished
Step 8. Touch Done or tick icon to save the card set
One of these options appears in the upper-right corner of the screen. The new set and all cards added to it will be saved afterwards.
Method 2 of 2: Using a Computer
Step 1. Log in to your account at
If you don't have an account yet, you'll need to create one so you can design your own set of learning media cards. Click Sign up ” in the upper right corner of the screen to create an account.
Step 2. Click + Create
It's in the blue bar at the top of the page.
Step 3. Enter the title and description of the card set
You can enter the goal of the set as the title of the card set (eg “Chapter 3 Definitions” or “Infinitive Verbs”). You can also add additional information about the set in the " Description " column if you wish.
Step 4. Import the definition list from another application (optional)
If you can access the definition list in a Word document, Google Doc, email message, or other text document, you can import it into Quizlet instead of manually typing all the information. Here's how:
- Open the file containing the definition list.
- Highlight all content and press Command+C (Mac) or Control+C (PC) to copy it to the clipboard.

Go back to Quizlet and click the “ +Import from Word, Excel, Google Docs, etc.
” in the top left corner of the page (under the " Description " column).
- Right-click the typing area under “Import your data” and select “ Paste ”.
- Under " Between term and definition ", select or enter the character or spacing that separates each term by its definition. You can select the option " Custom ” to enter characters that are not shown as options.
- Under " Between cards ", select or enter the character or spacing that separates each card. One card has one term and one definition. For example, if each information on the card is added in a separate row, you can select “ New line " as a separator.
- Click " Import " Learning media cards will be generated based on the information you imported.
Step 5. Enter the information for each card
Each card has two sides: a term side and a definition side. Enter the information for as many cards as needed, but make sure you use less than 500 cards if you want to print them.
- If you create a study card with a foreign language term, click “ CHOOSE LANGUAGE ” under each term and definition to ensure the correct language is selected.
- You may see a list of options displayed below the card, depending on what you typed into the column. Sometimes, Quizlet can guess the exact definition of the term you entered, and you can choose it from the list provided.
- To add an image to the card, click the “ IMAGE ” on the right side of " DEFINITION " and search for the image in the Quizlet database. If you want to use your own images, you will need to upgrade to a Quizlet Plus account which is offered for around $1.99 per month.
Step 6. Decide who can see your card set
Swipe to the top of the page to find the "Visible to everyone" and "Only editable by me" options in the top-right corner of the screen. Click " Change ” under each option to display the control options for each segment, then:
- In the " Visible to " section, you can set the set to be visible to everyone, a specific class (if applicable), users with a password (you can create a password when the option is selected), or only yourself.
- In the " Editable by " section, you can allow other users to edit the study card set by selecting “ People with a password ”, then create a password.
- Click " Save " after it finishes.
Step 7. Click Create to save the set
It's a blue button in the top-right corner of the page, as well as at the bottom. The new set and all the cards added will be saved afterwards.
