Beer aficionados know there's nothing better than an ice-cold beer on a hot day. However, only a few people knew that it was possible to turn ice-cold beer into ice cubes in a few seconds. All that is needed for this trick is a sealed bottle of beer (or other tasty drink), a freezer, and a hard, sturdy surface such as a concrete or tile floor. Check out the first step to get started!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Freezing Ice in Front of Your Eyes
Step 1. Put some unopened beers (or other coke bottles) in the freezer
Leave these drinks in the freezer until almost frozen, but still 100% liquid. Make sure your drinks are very cold in the freezer, not solid or like liquid ice. This process can take from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the strength of your freezer, so check your beer frequently to make sure it hasn't frozen in the bottle.
- If you leave your bottles in the freezer for too long, the liquid inside will eventually freeze. Since water expands when frozen, the bottle will crack or break. This is why it is recommended that you use multiple bottles – if you lose one, you can still use another.
- Drinks with clear bottles are best suited for this trick because clear bottles allow you to see the liquid in the bottle without a hitch.
Step 2. Take your bottle out of the freezer and bring it to a firm, solid surface
This trick requires a solid surface – tiles will work well, but if you don't have tiles in your home, you can use concrete, stone, or another similar surface. Don't use a surface that can scratch, break, or damage easily, so avoid wood and the softer metal.
Take any bottles that are already frozen
Step 3. Grip the bottle around its neck and hold it above your hard surface
Hold the bottle just a few inches above the hard surface you have chosen.
Step 4. Hit the bottle down against the surface a little hard
Your goal is to create bubbles in the bottle, but to prevent the bottle from bursting, hit it firmly against a hard surface without being too hard. When you are in doubt, be conservative. The bottle will make a sound like a tuning fork.
Step 5. Watch the ice spread across the liquid before your own eyes
If you do this correctly, the bubbles created by hitting the bottle against a hard surface will freeze quickly, then the ice will spread from the bubbles throughout the bottle and freeze all the liquid in about 5-10 seconds.
- If you're having a hard time getting this trick to work, your liquid may not have cooled down enough. Put your bottle back in the freezer and try again later.
- You can also try to open the lid right before you hit it against a hard surface, this will help with wave production.
Step 6. Learn the science behind this trick
This amazing trick works according to the “cooling” principle. Basically, when you leave beer in the freezer for enough time, it actually drops "below" its freezing temperature. However, because the inside of the bottle is very slippery, there is no means to form ice crystals, so the beer will remain a “very cold” liquid for a while. When you bang the bottle against a hard surface, bubbles will form, just like in any fizzy liquid. These bubbles will give the ice crystals something to “hold on to” at the molecular level, so if you look closely, you will actually see ice spreading out of the bubbles throughout the liquid.
Now that you understand how this trick works, use it to amaze your friends! Or, if you're at the bar, put on a show and use it to win a few free drinks from other patrons
Method 2 of 2: Chilling Beer for Your Drinking Enjoyment
Step 1. Use salted ice water
If you're less interested in the trick above than chilling the beer last time before the party, try placing your drink in a mixture of ice, water, and salt. Use about 1 cup of salt for every 1.3 kg of ice you use. If you want the drink to cool down quickly, use as much ice as you can, but be sure to add enough water to keep the mixture liquid. Liquid water can come into contact with the entire surface of the bottle or can, rather than just touching at a few points, such as if it is in the form of chunks of solid ice, because it can reduce the time it takes to cool the drink.
- The salt will reduce the cooling time. When salt dissolves in water, it separates into its component elements – Sodium and Chloride. To do this will require energy from the water, therefore the temperature of the water will be lower.
- Keep in mind that the thicker and denser the box you use to store the brine, the better its ability to keep it cold.
Step 2. Use a damp paper towel
Another way to quickly cool drinks is to wrap each bottle or can in a damp/wet paper towel, then place the drink in the freezer. Water is a better conductor of heat energy than air, so as long as the water soaking the paper towels is cold, it will draw heat from the drink faster than cold air from the freezer. In addition, the evaporation of the water in the paper towels will have a cooling effect on the drink as well.
Don't forget your beer in the freezer! If left too long, your bottles or cans will explode and make a mess of the contents of your freezer
Step 3. Use a cool glass
You've probably seen this in bar workouts – one way to cool a drink is to pour it into a chilled glass. While quick and convenient, this method has a few drawbacks – there is less chance of refrigerating the drink compared to the other methods in this article and it will only work effectively for the first drink you pour in the glass. This method also requires you to have a large supply of glasses in your fridge for emergency drinks, which can't be a simple option if you don't have a lot of free space in your fridge.
Putting the glass in the freezer will tempt you to get a colder result than if you put it in the refrigerator, but do so with caution. A rapid drop in temperature can cause the glass to crack or shatter. It is better to use plastic and glass cups that are specifically designed to be refrigerated in the freezer, which usually have a liquid layer that can be frozen for a long cooling effect
Tips
If you're using beer, the corona is best because it comes in a clear bottle
Warning
- Don't knock the beer on the surface too hard or the bottle will break.
- Be careful when placing any drink in a glass in the freezer as the frozen liquid will expand and the glass may break if left too long.
- Do not leave drinks in the freezer for too long, because you certainly do not want the frozen corona to contaminate the entire contents of your freezer.
