Hairbands are fun to wear for anyone with long hair. There are times when you want a hair band to match your outfit or match the theme of an event, but you can't find it in stores. If this is the case, or if you're just getting creative, get all the ingredients ready and make your own ribbon.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Preparing the Fabric Ribbon and Materials
Step 1. Choose the ribbon material you want to use
Good ribbon materials to work with include satin, velvet, nylon, cotton, vinyl, or grosgrain. You can choose any material you like.
When choosing a ribbon material, consider how stiff you want the ribbon to be. If you want a hair band that will stand up straight, use a stronger ribbon material such as grosgrain or vinyl
Step 2. Decide how you will apply the ribbon to your hair
There are many different types of bobby pins, hair bands, and headbands, and ribbons can be attached to almost any hair accessory. All you'll need to attach the ribbon to your hair accessory is hot glue or fabric glue.
Step 3. Choose the ribbon style you want to create
There are many styles of ribbons to choose from, all based on difficulty. Before you begin, decide on your method of making your ribbon, using glue or sewing it.
While making hairbands may seem difficult at first, with practice they will become easier, and you can move on to more complicated methods of making hairbands
Method 2 of 4: Making a Bow Tie Hair Ribbon
Step 1. Try making a bow tie hair band
This hair band has a tucked tail, which makes it look like a bow tie. These hair bands are easy to attach to hairpins and are great for babies, pets, or headbands.
Step 2. Prepare your equipment
You can use any type or pattern of fabric tape you want. You can also add embellishments to the center of the ribbon as a sweetener. You will need the following tools:
- cloth ribbon
- Needle
- Thread
- Hot glue or fabric glue
- Decoration for the center of the ribbon
- Hair clips, hair bands, or headbands to attach the ribbon
Step 3. Determine the size of the ribbon you want
This ribbon design is suitable for both small and large sizes. Once you've decided on the size you like, double the length and add another 2.5 cm to spare the material you need.
If you want a standard hair band that is 6 cm, you will need a cloth band that is 14.5 cm long
Step 4. Cut the tape to the required length
After the ribbon is cut, form the ribbon into a circle and stack the ends together 1.25 cm long.
Step 5. Hold the two overlapping ends and thread the threaded needle from the bottom (back) of the ribbon, then remove the needle from the top (front) of the ribbon
After that, wind the yarn around the center of the ribbon several times so that the ribbons come together and crimp in the middle.
Step 6. Tie the yarn in a knot
Once the thread is tightly wrapped around the center of the ribbon, you can insert the needle into the top (front) of the ribbon and pull it out from the bottom (back). Cut the thread at the base of the needle and tie the thread in a knot to secure the loop of thread to the ribbon.
Step 7. Finish your ribbon design
If you want, you can wrap a cloth ribbon around the center of the ribbon to hide the twist of the thread. You can add any embellishment by simply attaching it directly to the center of the ribbon. Once the glue dries, your tape is ready to use.
Method 3 of 4: Creating a Classic Hair Band
Step 1. Try making a classic hair band in a simple style
Classic hairbands are made in the same way as tying shoelaces. To make it, you will need about 12-15 cm of cloth tape and an elastic hair band.
Step 2. Insert one end of the cloth tape into the hole of the hair elastic
Make sure the ribbon is neat (not wrinkled / folded) and the two tails are the same length.
Step 3. Cross the two ribbon tails
To do this, place the two ribbon tails overlapping, then slide the tail on top to the left so that the two ribbon tails are side by side. This step will prepare you to form the knot.
Step 4. Form a knot with both tails of ribbon
Move the tail of the ribbon on the right up, across, and behind the tail of the ribbon on the left so that it forms a circle. Then thread the right end of the ribbon into the loop, and pull it tightly to form a knot.
Step 5. Fold each ribbon tail so that it forms a circle
This is the first step to making both ribbon loops. Hold each tail with your index finger near the knot to form a loop.
Step 6. Cross the circle on the left with the circle on the right
Then tuck the left loop under the right loop and pull it tight.
Step 7. Tuck the left circle under the right circle and pull it tight
Try to keep the loop of ribbon flat (not creased/tangled) when forming the knot. This will help keep the shape of the ribbon once it's tied.
Step 8. Position the two ribbon loops
Each circle must be the same size. Once they are the same size, trim the ends of the ribbon so that the tails are the same length. The hair band is now tightly tied to the elastic and ready to wear.
To strengthen the tail end of the ribbon, apply clear nail polish to prevent it from fraying
Method 4 of 4: Creating Layered Hair Bands
Step 1. Make a boutique-style layered hair band
To make this unique hair band, there are several materials you will need to make a hair band that is 8 cm long. Go to the nearest fabric store and purchase the following materials:
- 60cm cloth tape
- Needle
- Thread
- Pen needle
- Alligator clip (serrated paperclip)
- Thick cardboard measuring 13 x 10 cm
- Sharp scissors or rotary cutter (a circular cutting tool)
- straight ruler
- Hot glue
Step 2. Cut out the printed pattern on the thick cardboard
To make the ribbon shape and hold it in place, you'll need thick cardboard to serve as the template. Cut a square in the middle of a long piece of cardboard 2.5 cm deep and 1.25 cm long.
Measure the part you are going to cut with a ruler and mark it with a pencil. Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter to carefully cut the cardboard
Step 3. Wrap the ribbon around the length of the cardboard twice
This will create a layered look on the ribbon. Use the alligator clip to secure the end of the tape as you wrap it around the cardboard.
Step 4. Hold the loop of tape in place
After wrapping the ribbon around the cardboard twice, turn the cardboard over and use a pin to hold the loop in place. Push the needle through the hole in the cardboard so that it passes through the top and bottom of the tape.
Step 5. Slide the tape off the cardboard
Gently remove the tape from the cardboard, but keep the needle pierced in the center to hold the tape shape.
- Press the needle while holding the tape. Now you can pull out the tail of the ribbon from the bottom of the ribbon to the left and right sides. The ribbon will begin to form the letter "X".
- Drag each circle to form an 'X' design. The goal is to inflate the ribbon to create more volume and shape on each side of the ribbon. You can circle the ribbon the way you want while continuing to press down on the center so it doesn't come off.
Step 6. Sew the ribbon with thread
Take a needle that has been threaded and make sure that the end of the thread is knotted so that it holds the stitches. Insert the needle from under the center of the ribbon while holding the ribbon in an "X" pattern.
After sewing the center of the ribbon a few times, cut the thread at the base of the needle and tie the thread in a knot
Step 7. Glue the ribbon on the hair accessory you want
You can use hot glue or fabric glue to attach the ribbon to bobby pins, headbands, or hair bands.
Once the glue dries, your tape is ready to use
Tips
- Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the ends of the tape to prevent them from fraying. Make sure the nail polish is completely dry before you start shaping the tape.
- You can find plain (unadorned) barrette ribbons and hair clips at most arts and crafts stores.
- Strengthen the ends of the tape with heat to prevent fraying.
- Use silk thread or sewing thread.
