Roof ventilation is a component of the house that functions to remove moisture in the house, thereby preventing the growth of mold and mildew. Roof ventilation also helps to keep wood from rotting, which is a form of mold that thrives. Roof vents are made of plastic or metal, and are also known as turbine vents. You can purchase the materials needed to install roof ventilation at a hardware or home improvement store. Use the following tips to install roof ventilation.
Step
Step 1. Determine the number of roof vents
Measure the width of the attic floor. For each section of 14 m2, you must install a roof vent measuring 0.1 m2. If your attic floor size is 41.8 m2, you will need three roof vents measuring 0.1 m2.
Step 2. Decide where to place the roof vent
- Nail the attic ceiling where you will install the roof vent. Nail it from inside the attic. You will see nails sticking out of the roof if you are outdoors.
- Measure the ventilation evenly.
- Position the roof vent at least 0.6 m below the roof ridge.
- Make sure that there are no electrical or other wires where you will install the roof vent.
- Avoid placing roof vents over the rafters.
Step 3. Mark the location of the roof vent on the roof
Use a pencil to mark the dimensions of the roof vent. Use the nail sticking out of the roof as the center of the measurement.
Step 4. Remove the shingles
- Remove the shingles from the position where the roof vent will be installed. Cut loose parts of the shingle with a utility knife.
- Pull off the nailed part of the shingles with a crowbar.
- Use the crowbar to pull the remaining nail from where you will attach the roof vent.
Step 5. Make holes for roof ventilation
Use a chainsaw to cut the marked areas and remove the shingles. The hole must be the same size as the roof hole opening to be used.
Step 6. Loosen the shingles around it
Arrange the sides and tops of the shingles around the hole cut.
Step 7. Use putty
Apply putty to the roof vent flange. The flange will extend outward from the base of the roof vent. The flanges serve as a surface for attaching the vent to the roof, and also help to prevent leakage between the vent and the roof surface.
Step 8. Insert the flange
- Insert the back and sides of the roof vent flanges under the loose parts of the shingles.
- Leave the front of the flange on top of the shingles.
Step 9. Secure roof ventilation
- Use a hammer and nails to secure the roof vent flange to the roof.
- Apply putty on and around the nails.
Step 10. Secure the shingles
- Use roof cement to separate under the shingles. Use roof cement only to cover the back of the shingles and the sides of the roof vent flanges.
- Press the back and sides of the shingles into the roof vent flanges. Do not apply too much pressure to avoid bending or denting the flange.
Step 11. Install the remaining roof vents
Repeat the above process for the remaining roof vents that you want to install.
Step 12. Clean the roof
- Use a broom to remove any dust or debris from the roof.
- Discard the remaining ingredients.
