Many people are concerned about the use of chemicals in products used in salons. If you want to dye your hair using a more natural method, there are a number of ways to choose from. You can lighten your hair color using ingredients like lemon or honey. You can also enhance your current hair color with various herbs, teas, and powders.
Step
Method 1 of 6: Brighten Hair Color
Step 1. Try lemon
If you want to lighten your hair color naturally, try using lemon. Many people say lemon can be an alternative to salon dyes to lighten hair color.
- Mix a cup of water with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Then, apply it to damp hair and let it dry naturally. See if the hair color becomes lighter.
- Wait for the hair to dry on its own before washing or rinsing.
- Repeat this treatment once a week to lighten hair color slowly. Do not use this treatment more than once a week, or your hair may be damaged.
Step 2. Use honey and vinegar
A mixture of honey and vinegar can also be used to lighten hair color naturally. A simple recipe using honey and vinegar can be applied to your hair if you want to lighten its natural color.
- You need raw, uncooked honey, which is usually sold in health food stores. Use a cup of raw honey, 2 cups of distilled vinegar, 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil (first squeeze), and 1 tablespoon of cardamon powder or cinnamon. Mix all ingredients to form a paste.
- Wet your hair under the shower to moisturize it. Apply the paste. Wrap your hair in plastic food wrap and use a shower cap or swim cap to keep the plastic securely attached. You can also wrap your head in a towel, as you would after a shower.
- Leave the mixture on your hair overnight. Then, wash your hair the next morning. Check to see if you notice a difference in the natural color of your hair.
Step 3. Use baking soda
If you avoid chemical dyes, baking soda can be an option to lighten your hair color. Baking soda works by breaking down the chemicals that build up in your hair and make it look darker. Mix a little baking soda into the shampoo when washing your hair, do it once a week. Over time, the hair color will start to look lighter. This method takes more time than other methods. It may take several weeks to get the desired effect.
This method is suitable for use on hair that has been professionally colored or those who use a lot of styling products
Step 4. Consider cinnamon
Cinnamon, a well-known spice, can really lighten hair. Pour conditioner into your palms and add a pinch of cinnamon powder before use. Coat your hair with the cinnamon-mixed conditioner evenly, starting at the roots and working your way up to the ends. Leave it overnight and then rinse and wash your hair with shampoo the next morning. You will notice a lighter hair color.
Step 5. Add salt
The mixture and salt create an agent that lightens hair naturally and can be used safely. Mix salt and water in a 1:5 ratio. Rinse your hair with this mixture and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, wash your hair. Check to see if the hair color is lighter.
Step 6. Lighten hair color with a home leave-in conditioner
Gather the juice of 3 lemons, 2 bags (4 grams) of chamomile tea brewed in a cup (250 ml) of boiling water, 1 teaspoon (5 grams) cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) almond oil.
- Once the chamomile tea has cooled, remove or strain the leaves and mix them with all the ingredients in a small bowl. Once well mixed, pour all of it into a spray bottle.
- Shake the mixture before spraying onto the section of hair you want to lighten.
- Dry the hair in the sun for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to keep yourself protected from UV rays.
Method 2 of 6: Strengthen Blonde Hair Color
Step 1. Prepare chamomile tea to rinse hair
If you happen to have naturally blonde hair and want to strengthen the color, rinse your hair with chamomile tea. Apart from brightening your natural blonde color, chamomile tea can repair damaged hair. If you have sun-tanned strands, for example, chamomile tea can help restore the condition.
First, prepare the tea. You can use regular teabags, but for the best effect try buying chamomile flowers online or at your local health food store. Steep half a cup of flowers with 1 liter of boiling water for half an hour. Then, strain the brewed water and let it cool
Step 2. Wash your hair with shampoo
While waiting for the tea to cool, wash your hair with shampoo. Perform the washing process using hair care products that you normally use. When finished, rinse hair with tea.
Step 3. Add the chamomile rinse
After you finish washing your hair, you can rinse your hair with chamomile tea. Flush hair with tea at least 15 times. You should flush your hair over a clogged basin, bucket, or sink. You need to use the same chamomile tea to rinse your hair over and over again. When you're done, squeeze your hair to get rid of the excess water. Let the tea infuse for half an hour and then rinse your hair with clean water.
If you can't find chamomile, you can use calendula, mullein, yellow broom, saffron, saffron, or quassia tree shavings
Step 4. Try rhubarb if chamomile doesn't give the desired results
Chamomile tea may not have the same effect for everyone. Many owners of blonde hair use rhubarb root to highlight the blonde color of their hair. Rhubarb tends to give a golden (honey-like) shine to naturally blonde or brown hair.
- Take 3 cups of hot water and pour it into a saucepan with 4 tablespoons of rhubarb root, chopped into small pieces. Heat over low heat (do not boil) for 20 minutes.
- Strain the resulting concoction, then apply it to the hair. Just like chamomile tea, rinse hair with steeped rhubarb root 15 times. Make sure you contain it with a basin, or bucket so that it can be reused.
- Rinse hair with clean water and let hair dry by itself. If possible, dry your hair in the sun. This step will enhance the coloring effect.
Method 3 of 6: Getting Tanned Hair
Step 1. Choose the right henna mixture for you
Use henna powder to bring out the natural brown color of your hair. However, making the required henna mixture will depend on the shade of brown you want.
- If used without the addition of other ingredients, henna can produce a red-orange color. If you don't want your hair color to be too flashy, it's best to mix the henna with other herbs or roots. However, if your hair is gray, gray, or has a very light color, you should not mix henna with other materials.
- If you have dark hair, mix the henna with chamomile for a lighter effect. Use chamomile powder and henna powder in a ratio of 1:2.
Step 2. Prepare the coloring paste
Once you've decided how dark you want your hair to be, prepare a dye paste. Take the henna powder, with any additional ingredients to be used, and add enough boiling water to make a paste. Then, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Mix until smooth and allow the mixture to become warm to the touch.
Step 3. Apply the mixture on the hair
First, rinse your hair under clean running water to make it damp. Then, put on a pair of rubber gloves. Massage the dye paste into your scalp and hair. Comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb to ensure that the paste is evenly distributed throughout your hair. Then wrap your hair in a shower cap or swimming cap. Let the paste sit on your hair for 30 minutes to 2 hours. If you have dark hair, wait a little longer.
Step 4. Rinse hair
Remove shower cap and rinse hair under clean running water. Rinse hair until no paste remains. The rinse water should look clear as it flows from the hair. Let the hair dry by itself. If possible, dry your hair in the sun to enhance the coloring effect.
Method 4 of 6: Improve Dark Hair Color
Step 1. Try a sage rinse
If you have dark or dark brown hair, you can enhance your natural hair color using sage. If your hair is starting to turn gray, sage can also be used to cover up gray hair.
- Use dried sage, which can be purchased at most supermarkets. Steep about a handful of sage in 1 liter of boiling water for at least 30 minutes. Let it cool down.
- Strain the sage brewed water. Then, flush the hair with steeped sage water 15 times. Make sure you collect the steeping water that flows from your hair using a basin or bucket. You need to use the same brewed water many times. Let the brewed water soak into your hair for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
- This method takes some time to show the desired results. Hair color will not change in an instant. The effect of the staining will be seen gradually over several weeks. Repeat this process weekly until you get the desired color. After that, repeat the dyeing process once a month to maintain the hair color.
Step 2. Use the bark of the alnus tree (alder)
If sage doesn't produce the desired results, try using alnus bark. Alnus bark is a botanical substance that produces a slightly lighter color than sage. You can use it to lighten gray hair or darken blonde hair naturally.
Get a piece of alnus bark from a health food store or buy one online. Heat 30 grams of alnus bark pieces in 1 liter of water over low heat (do not boil) for about half an hour. Cool, strain and use the boiled water in the same way as sage brewed water
Step 3. Try walnut shells
Many people believe that walnut shells can blacken hair. Walnut shells (the outer shell of walnuts) can leave stains that are difficult to remove. So, be careful while using this method. It is recommended that you use gloves. Walnut shells also require a lot of preparation before they can be used to color hair.
- Crush the walnut shells to make a paste. How much you need depends on how thick your hair is because you will have to coat the entire hair. So you will need more if you have long hair. Pour boiling water into the pasta and add a pinch of salt. Soak the pasta for 3 days. Then, add another 3 cups of boiling water and heat (do not boil) for another 5 hours. Make sure you use a non-metallic pan to make the mixture.
- Strain the soaking water and put the walnut shell pulp in a cloth bag. Squeeze the bag tightly, and make sure you remove any remaining liquid. Put the remaining liquid in a saucepan and boil until the water remaining is about 1 liter from its initial volume.
- Add 1 teaspoon Jamaican peppercorns (allspice) to the remaining water. Store the mixture in the refrigerator for a week. Then, apply it to your hair as you would with a brew of sage or alnus bark.
Method 5 of 6: Adding a Reddish Tint
Step 1. Use beet or carrot juice
If you want to add a rosy tinge to your hair, try beetroot or carrot juice. For dark red and strawberry blonde hues, use beet juice. To get a red-orange hair color, use carrot juice.
- It's easy enough to use beet or carrot juice. You just need to add a cup of juice to the hair. If your hair is dry, you can add a little coconut oil to moisturize your hair at the same time.
- Spread the juice all over the hair. When you're done, wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap and let the juices soak for 1 hour. Wear old clothes while waiting as juices can stain clothes.
- Rinse the juice thoroughly after 1 hour. If you want a darker color, repeat the same process the next day.
Step 2. Try the tea
If you already have reddish hair, use tea to strengthen the natural color of your hair. However, the tea will not create a reddish tinge by itself. Use rooibos tea if you want to enhance your hair's natural red color.
- Brew 3-5 teabags in two glasses of water. Let it cool, then apply it to your hair. You can mix the tea in the conditioner or apply it separately.
- You should let the tea soak into your hair for at least an hour. To get a darker color, let the tea steep longer. Then, rinse until completely clean.
Step 3. Perform herbal treatments
Herbs can be used to produce a reddish tint to the hair. However, this method is fairly slow. You will have to apply the herbs from time to time to get the desired color.
- Use 2 cups of water, cup of calendula flowers, and 2 tablespoons of hibiscus petals. You can buy herbs at health food stores or buy them online.
- Bring the water to a boil. Then, add the herbs and simmer over low heat for at least 1 hour (do not boil). separate the boiled water and flower pulp and store the filtered water in the refrigerator.
- Repeat this process until you get the hair color you want. Then, rinse your hair with herbs every few days to maintain the color.
Method 6 of 6: Avoiding Hidden Dangers
Step 1. Do a test on the hair
Before using any natural hair coloring method, it's a good idea to do a test. Hair may react poorly to certain methods or produce an unwelcome color. Color a small section of hair first and select the hair at the back of the head. See if you like the resulting color before trying to dye your entire hair.
Step 2. Don't try to make big changes with natural dyes
Natural hair dye will not change hair color dramatically. Natural dyes aim to emphasize the natural color of the hair. For example, if your hair is dark blonde, using chamomile tea will result in a lighter color, leaning towards yellow blonde. However, adding henna to naturally blonde hair will not turn your hair brown. If you want to completely change your hair color, you should go to a salon.
Step 3. Be careful if you have dyed your hair in a salon before
Some salon products can cause hair to react badly to certain natural hair coloring methods. As always, test your method of choice on small strands of hair before trying to dye the whole hair. You may also want to call your stylist and ask what products he or she used to dye your hair before and if they would react badly with natural hair dyes.
