This wikiHow teaches you how to find people to follow on Instagram. If you already know the account name, you can find it easily through the Instagram search feature. You can also use the Discover People tool to get suggestions of people to follow, including people on Facebook accounts and phone contact lists.

Method 1 of 3: Performing a Search by Username
Step 1. Launch Instagram
Open Instagram by tapping the orange, purple, and pink camera icon in the app list. If you are logged in (login), the Instagram home page will be opened.
Step 2. Tap on the magnifying glass shaped icon
You can find it at the bottom.
Step 3. Tap the search field
It's a gray column at the top of the screen where it says "Search". Your device screen will bring up the keyboard.
Step 4. Tap the Accounts tab
This will limit the search to only people who are on Instagram.
Step 5. Write down the person's name or account name
When you enter the name, the search results will appear below the search field.
Step 6. Tap the account you want to follow
The person's profile will be opened. If the page is public, the post grid will be displayed. If the account is set to private, the screen only shows their profile photo and biography.
If the desired account does not exist, scroll down the screen
Step 7. Tap on the blue Follow button
You can find it in the upper left corner. By doing so, you will follow the account. From now on, you can find the account in the Following section of your profile.
If the account is protected, tap Follow to send a request to the account owner. If he agrees to the request, you will follow suit.
Method 2 of 3: Using the Discover People Tool
Step 1. Launch Instagram
Open Instagram by tapping the orange, purple, and pink camera icon in the app list. Once logged in, the Instagram home page will open.
Step 2. Tap the profile icon
It's a person-shaped icon in the lower-right corner. Doing so will open your profile.
Step 3. Tap
This menu is in the form of 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the screen. The menu will be expanded.
Step 4. Tap +Discover People
The icon is in the form of a silhouette of a person next to a sign +. You can find this option at the bottom of the menu. A list of Instagram accounts you can follow will appear.
Step 5. Find people you want to follow
Scroll the device screen until you find the person you want to follow.
- If you have synced your contacts with Instagram, your contacts with Instagram accounts will appear in this list. Check out the section Syncing Phone or Tablet Contacts to sync your contacts.
- If your Instagram account is not already linked to Facebook, at the top of the screen a button will appear Connect "Facebook" is blue. If you want your Facebook friends who also have Instagram accounts to appear in the Discover People list, tap Connect and follow the given instructions to set it up.
Step 6. Tap the desired profile
The person's profile page will open so you can check it out. If the page is public, you can see a grid of posts. If set to private, his account page only shows his profile photo and biography.
Step 7. Tap Follow to follow the person
It's a blue button at the top of the screen. From now on, you have followed him. This means you can find this person in the Following on your profile.
- If the account is protected, tap Follow to send a request to that person. If your request is approved, you will follow the account.
- Return to the Discover People page by tapping the back button. On this page, you can find more people you want to follow.
Method 3 of 3: Syncing Phone or Tablet Contacts
Step 1. Launch Instagram
Open Instagram by tapping the orange, purple, and pink camera icon in the app list. Once logged in, the Instagram home page will open.
Step 2. Tap the profile icon
This person-shaped icon is in the lower-right corner. Doing so will open your profile.
Step 3. Tap
This menu is in the form of 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the page. The menu will be expanded.
Step 4. Tap Settings
It's a gear icon at the top of the menu.
Step 5. Tap Account located at the bottom of the menu
Step 6. Tap Contacts Syncing
You can find it in the middle of the menu.
Step 7. Slide the "Connect Contacts" button to On
By doing so, the contacts on your phone will be synced with Instagram's servers. Once synced, your contacts who also have Instagram accounts will appear in the Discover People list.
You can turn off contact synchronization at any time by sliding the switch to the Off position
Tips
- You may have to protect your Instagram account if there is some information on it that you don't want to make public.
- By syncing your contact list to Instagram, your family, friends, and business contacts can find your personal Instagram account.
